Chapter 779: Chapter 677: Knight on the Battlefield

On the frontline against alien creatures, Bob was valiantly fighting in his Power Armor.

The armor-piercing incendiary rounds sprayed from his triple-barrel heavy machine gun were efficiently reaping the lives of the alien creatures, quickly forming a wall of fire with the burning bodies before the defense line.

This was a recently popularized tactic, using heavy machine guns to fire armor-piercing incendiary rounds that kill and ignite the alien bodies, followed by using Electromagnetic Rifles to strike other aliens illuminated by the flames.

This approach has two benefits; firstly, the burning bodies illuminate the battlefield, giving other soldiers visibility and firing angles, and they also serve as a natural barrier that slows down the alien assault to some extent.

After all, by biological instinct, the alien creatures inherently fear flames; even under the higher node’s control, these alien beings lack independent thinking ability, causing them to charge fearlessly.

Moreover, given the aliens’ enormous size, other alien creatures need to climb over the bodies during their advance, making them more conspicuous and easier to shoot during the climb.

Seeing a small hill quickly formed from the piles of alien corpses ahead, Bob was quite satisfied with the killing effectiveness of the heavy machine gun on his Power Armor.

"Change ammunition!" Bob noticed the bullets in his heavy machine gun were about to run out, shouted, then took two steps back. Only after emptying the last few bullets did he pick up a new ammo belt from the side and load it into his machine gun.

A soldier nearby swiftly assisted Bob by removing the empty ammo box and replacing it with a new one.

Bob moved a bit, checked that everything was in order, then nodded to the soldier, took a few steps forward, and rejoined the battle.

As he pulled the trigger and felt the vibration from the bullets being fired, Bob’s thoughts suddenly drifted for some reason.

It had been several months since he returned to the front line after completing a three-month service with the United Security Maintenance Force, and even the second batch of soldiers trained and re-equipped there had already returned.

The soldiers who had undergone formal training, equipped with Exoskeletons and Power Armor, greatly enhanced the original unit’s combat effectiveness against the alien creatures, efficiently killing numerous aliens.

The enhanced combat efficiency brought by these soldiers and equipment undoubtedly made the defense line more secured, and the pressure on their defense line wasn’t as strong as before. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

At least in Bob’s impression, there hadn’t been any emergencies on their defense line in these months; they solved almost all issues themselves, marking a significant improvement compared to before, and the line became much more stable.

The largest credit went to Bob and the soldiers who re-equipped with new gear, but part of the credit also belonged to the "Knights."

With the formation of the first Knight Squad and the collection of blood tax, the first batch of Knight Squad members was quickly deployed to the frontline to assist the garrison in fighting the alien creatures.

Initially, Bob and others didn’t pay much attention to this unit, which, although also equipped with Exoskeletons, used traditional firearms and adopted the rather retro title of "Knight," making them seem like a joke.

However, Bob didn’t think there was anything worth mocking about the "Knights," merely considering them not useful in head-on combat.

After all, 7.62mm caliber bullets couldn’t pierce through alien skins, only effective against armed groups disturbing peace, confining the "Knights" to limited roles with their weapons.

However, the "Knights" were keenly aware of this, and upon realizing their weapon shortcomings, they actively undertook auxiliary combat duties.

Though equipped with ordinary firearms, their Exoskeletons were no different from others, providing mechanical strength enhancement, making the "Knights" excellent auxiliary forces on the battlefield.

Like earlier, a "Knight" assisted Bob in reloading, significantly saving Bob’s time on switching ammunitions.

On the battlefield, even a second can determine life and death; saving time effectively boosts combat power.

This quickly earned the "Knights" recognition from the soldiers; although some would jokingly call them "Knights," they undoubtedly won the respect of the other soldiers.

Bob, while creating another fiery slope, chatted with the "Knight."

With the battlefield pressure easing, even as Bob continued fighting, he had the leisure to converse with others.

"Anton, I heard your second batch of Knight Squad members are arriving soon?" Bob, after performing a striking barrage, inquired the "Knight" beside him.

The Knight nodded politely, continuing his work as he replied, "Yes, the second batch paying the blood tax will return next week, after which they will take over our duties and continue providing battlefield support for you."

"That’s great to hear!" Bob said after a quick burst that killed an alien slipping past the firewall: "Hope they can be as good as you. I’ll miss you when you go back."

"Haha, rest assured, all members of our Knight Squad are excellent; they will satisfy you," the Knight laughed while distributing new ammo to others, brimful of confidence in the incoming new "Knights."

Though the Knight Squad hasn’t been around long, with the earliest forming only a few months ago, as a unit, members trained together, not only knowing each other well but also boasting decent trust among each other.

Hence, the Knight was confident in the arriving new Knights, relying on the trust in comrades from the same unit.

Bob nodded, saying no more, and continued battling the aliens alongside his Mecha squad composed entirely of soldiers in Power Armor, each with a Knight by their side.

In the trenches, the primary duty of these Knights was to transport ammo from the rear depots, and handle reloading for equipment like Power Armor and heavy machine guns, assisting other soldiers in combat.

Though limited to auxiliary roles, the Knights evidently excelled at them.
