I Died and Received an SSS-Rank Unique Ability-Chapter 59: Rat’s nest
It wasn’t long, however, before their peaceful journey turned into another battle for survival.
The deeper into the tunnel they ventured, the more waves of ice rats emerged. Their numbers grew with each encounter, as though every step brought the group closer to the heart of their nest.
The creatures’ tactics also changed. No longer cautious, the ice rats attacked with savage desperation, hurling themselves at the group in frenzied swarms.
But even then, they were no real threat.
The group cut them down with practised ease.
Dain fought with a relentless fury, while Vale moved with a fluid precision, his blade carving through the enemy like wind through grass. Ayla blurred between shadows, seen only when retrieving her daggers from the corpses of her kills. Even Klein was starting to find his rhythm in the chaos, growing more confident and effective with each skirmish.
At last, after one final assault of relentless creatures, the tunnel opened up.
They stepped into a vast chamber, so massive that Klein’s artifact couldn’t find its ceiling or end, casting just enough light for them to navigate forward.
The temperature dropped sharply as they advanced. Each breath turned to mist, curling into the air like smoke with every exhale.
Vale tightened his grip on his weapon. Something about this place felt wrong—eerily, viscerally wrong.
Then, a low growl rumbled through the chamber.
The group froze. Eyes darted through the gloom, searching for the source, but Klein’s artifact offered too little light—it barely pierced through the darkness.
But they didn’t have to wait long.
A single heavy step echoed through the cavern. Then another. And another.
From the darkness, a nightmare took shape.
It emerged slowly, towering and monstrous—a humanoid rat cloaked in frost-rimed fur. Its dark navy eyes gleamed with malice beneath a deeply furrowed brow. Yellow fangs jutted from its snarling muzzle, and its massive arms bulged with unnatural muscle. Each hand ended in claws like curved daggers, sharpened for carnage.
In its grip was a savage blade—part jagged metal, part ice, its serrated edge wicked and cruel, like the maw of some long-dead predator.
It moved with chilling deliberation, every step radiating lethal intent. Steam hissed from its breath, and its heavy tail swept behind it like a living whip.
Then came the eyes.
Dozens of them. Glowing in the darkness behind the monster, watching and waiting, like children peering out from behind their father’s legs.
The group held their weapons high, stances tight and ready.
Suddenly, the towering rat let out a piercing shriek—a sound that rang through the cavern like a blade dragged across steel. But it wasn’t meant for them.
In an instant, the dozen glowing eyes scattered. The thunder of countless feet striking the icy ground echoed from every direction.
The group shifted, standing back to back as more eyes flickered to life in the shadows, encircling them completely.
There was no room left to run—not that they would.
"Me and Dain will handle the smaller ones. You two—focus on the big guy," Vale said, his eyes locked on the swarm of countless monsters.
Vale knew the two of them were best suited for crowd control. With the massive student’s never-ending mana essence, and Vale’s ability to almost instantly devour mana crystals, the two of them could potentially fight nonstop.
That left the towering rat to Ayla and Klein. With Klein’s debuff weakening the creature, Ayla should have enough of an opening to stay alive— at least long enough for him and Dain to thin down the herd of monsters. Or so he hoped.

The blade of hellfire swung again and again, carving through the countless creatures. Every arc of Vale’s weapon reduced enemies to burning ash—but for every four that fell, six more took their place. There was no end to them.
Wounds began to open across Vale’s body. There were far too many enemies, and defending against them all was impossible. His focus narrowed into pure survival, and each movement aimed at killing as many as possible before they could overwhelm him.
He gritted his teeth, blood mingling with sweat.
"This won’t do."
Glancing up briefly at the flood of creatures still advancing, Vale reached inward, calling upon his unique ability.
In an instant, the Ravenous Flame answered. The black fire bloomed into existence, pulsing with immense hunger.
The student didn’t linger.
Before the flames could fully emerge, Vale had already swung.
The weapon tore through the swarm of monsters like a reaper’s scythe. The black fire devoured everything in its path—bodies, mana crystals, even sound—until nothing but empty space remained.
At last, the endless tide of monsters began to thin. Dain had already unleashed his own unique ability, a single toss of his coin igniting a surge of fury that lit up the battlefield.
With a sliver of breathing room, Vale turned his gaze to the center of the chamber—where Ayla battled the towering rat.
She was nearing her limit. Her breath came in ragged gasps, and dark blood streamed from a deep wound on her leg. Not far from her, Klein was casting his debuff, pausing only to fire off the occasional shots with his bow.
"We need to end this—fast."
Though Vale and Dain had carved down most of the swarm, too many still remained. Each passing second brought Ayla closer to the edge.
Vale summoned the knight. A heavy pull wrenched at his core as a dark figure emerged before him—silent, looming, and ready for orders. With a mental command, Vale sent the knight charging toward the massive rat.
Every time his mana essence ran low, the black flame consumed another crystal. Then another. His core swung violently between fullness and emptiness, making his stomach churn with the raw pressure of energy flooding and draining from his body.
But he gritted his teeth and kept moving. He kept cutting through the enemies until finally, the last rat collapsed beneath the crushing force of Dain’s silver gauntlet.
Without pause, Vale’s eyes snapped toward the center of the chamber.
Klein lay sprawled on the icy ground, his body soaked in blood. Ayla, too, was covered in wounds, swaying unsteadily on her feet, her daggers trembling in her grip.
Only the knight remained, locked in a battle with the monstrous rat, doing all it could to keep the monster at bay.
Without delay, he surged forward, his weapon blazing once more with the black flame. Its presence distorted the air around him as he soared toward the creature, ready to strike.
