Chapter 79: 078. Towering above the ground_1
In the gloomy, foul-smelling, nauseating mud, Lu Ban could feel those murky creatures from the Foreign Domain trying to infiltrate him.
Through his nose, mouth, eyes, ears, and every single pore, the mud tried to burrow into his body with all its might, aiming to transform Lu Ban’s physiological structure into a monstrous half-fish, half-human creature.
As the mud gradually corroded Lu Ban, within his body, green plants also slowly grew, using the mud as nourishment to resist the Mutation.
In Lu Ban’s mind, countless voices came through the mud.
“…I just want to be a human, a common human…”
“…I wonder if Shuangyu will be happy after getting married…”
“…I don’t want to stay here, I don’t want to become like you…”
“…I’m not ready to die, I still want to live, yes, as long as I can survive, I am willing to do anything…”
“…Twisted wishes inevitably bring about twisted outcomes, everything is indeed real, everything is indeed destined…”
“…Poor child, I could only manage to take one last glance at him…”
“…Let everything be destroyed, let everything be destroyed, haha…”
Countless voices, of men and women, old and young, in different languages, intertwined, these words acted like separate wills, converging in the polluted mud, trying to burrow into Lu Ban’s mind, seeking to turn Lu Ban’s consciousness into that chaotic mess.
From ancient times to now, the consciousness of all those who have died in this mud now blend within it, forming the will of the mud.
Countless wishes fused into one, eventually only serve to twist everything, leading all things towards destruction.
Mental Pollution far beyond human endurance spread in Lu Ban’s mind.
Around his body, the verdant plants staved off the mud, forming a cocoon-like structure, but mud still continued to pour in through the gaps.
Outside the mud, in the riddled Hai Family Mansion, Cui Siter watched as Lu Ban seized the Divine Idol, only to be swallowed by the mud.
The high tower had become a monster gathered from the mud; from the monster’s body, countless viscous tentacles of mud stretched out, and in the now-blackened pool, the immense mud grew pitch-black hooves and slowly rose to its feet.
It resembled an ancient beast from legend that destroyed cities, its towering form undeniably that of a supernatural creature that reigned above mankind.
Cui Siter felt his Sanity burning. In reality, ever since he had seen the high tower turn to mud, his Sanity had been under assault. Fortunately, he was somewhat prepared, so he did not lose enough to go mad on the spot.
But even so, upon seeing the grand, inhuman, terrifying creature, Cui Siter felt an instinctual tremor.
He raised his revolver.
Then he pulled the trigger.
This was the first time Cui Siter fired his gun during this mission.
The scene seemed somewhat absurd.
A trivial, insignificant Mortal firing a gun at a Divine Being’s incarnation, a colossally sized creature from myth.
Anyone who saw it would think it comical.
But Cui Siter did it anyway.
He did not believe he had the same strong willpower as Lu Ban, his combat skills were only slightly better than others, and he did not possess any shocking abilities to fight ghosts or control the extraordinary.
The reason he could survive in the Silent Lands for so long, even daring to take on [Corrosion] difficulty, was reliant on this revolver.
Mimic Solar Flare
This was the reward item Cui Siter received after completing his [Detective] career mission.
True to its name, the effect of this revolver is to create a false sun.
Buzz—
An explosive wave spread from Cui Siter’s gun barrel, creating a golden sun that boiled over with heat waves, even more resplendent than the pale orb that hung in the sky.
The massive creature had yet to make contact with the golden sun before it began to evaporate, to dissolve, its multitude of cries of agony resounding, as if you could see souls being separated from the mire.
The warm and splendid sunshine illuminated the earth, bringing daylight to Dried Water Town, which it possibly hadn’t seen in hundreds of years.
The people outside Dried Water Town, those affected by the Black Queen Mother yet spared due to their slightly further distance, could only hide in their homes as the Hai Family’s walking corpses passed by. But now, they couldn’t help stepping out as they saw the bright sunlight through their windows, witnessing the radiant sun rising above Dried Water Town—an experience surpassing myth.
They prostrated, knelt down, prayed, as if a new god was rising.
As for the mire, it was evaporated entirely by the scorching sun; even souls were transcended.
The revolver in Cui Siter’s hand was unbearably hot, blistering off a layer of skin on his palm. The burns were fierce and painful, but they did not cause Cui Siter to release his grip.
Only when the sunlight disappeared did Cui Siter start to feel the tremor and the piercing pain in his right hand.
Although he possessed the powerful firepower of Mimic Solar Flare, unfortunately, this ability of the revolver could only be used once per mission, and after its use, Mimic Solar Flare would be nothing more than a common revolver for at least a week.
The price was quite substantial.
However, this was also why Cui Siter’s strategy for missions in Silent Lands was quite simple: first, survive and conduct a stable investigation, find the mastermind or the target, and finally, gather all those who needed to be dealt with and blast them all in one go.
Previously, in the Night Country, when facing the monsters from the Black Forest, Cui Siter resolved the problem in this manner.
Originally, before entering this mission, Cui Siter’s plan was to attend the wedding conventionally and then, if any mishap occurred during the ceremony, to deliver one striking blow and disengage. Considering the complete and utter destruction, there shouldn’t have been any remaining monsters.
Only, this mission encountered Lu Ban, triggering many odd and peculiar things.
“Should be… still alive, right?”
Cui Siter walked towards the center of the explosion caused by Mimic Solar Flare.
The device was deadly to nefarious beings but not highly harmful to humans. And besides, Cui Siter thought, with Lu Ban’s tenacious vitality, he could probably take two direct hits without an issue.
The sunlight even evaporated the metallic stench, and Cui Siter saw at the epicenter of the explosion a cocoon of gray-green color.
He crouched down and prodded the cocoon with his unharmed left hand.
The gray vegetation immediately withered and turned to ashes.
Lu Ban was curled up inside it, clutching a Divine Idol made of what seemed like white jade.
“Am I too late?”
Cui Siter, seeing Lu Ban’s eyes tightly closed, thought he had perished and inevitably crouched down.
“What a pity, you were a good person. I will remember you.”
He intended to take the Divine Idol from Lu Ban’s hands, but suddenly realized that Lu Ban had opened his eyes.
“What are you doing?”
Lu Ban asked, sitting up and clutching the Divine Idol tightly.
“…I’m glad you’re alright.”

Cui Siter was somewhat speechless.
Meanwhile, in Lu Ban’s vision, the ash of the grass and trees twisted into the indifferent and cold text of the System.
