Chapter 83: 082. Interactive Video_1

September, the school year began.

Xu Duchong, a sophomore at Jiangcheng University’s School of Automation, was not in high spirits.

He had partied too hard at the beginning of his freshman year, which led to his failing three courses during the final exams in June; the red lights flashed, and his summer was restless.

Fortunately, he scraped by on his retakes. As for his GPA, well, he didn’t want to talk about it now.

On Friday night, the dorm lights stayed on; his three roommates went to the internet café to team up and “deliver packages for APEX.” Xu Duchong didn’t join, mainly because he was being watched by the counselor. If he was caught frequenting internet cafes, his parents might be notified.

Of course, there was another reason: they only needed three players for the team, so an extra person would only be left to watch from the sidelines.

Xu Duchong certainly wouldn’t do something so against the grain as studying in the dorm. He had intended to watch a movie, but ended up scrolling through a video site and watching people squeeze blackheads for thirty minutes.

It was then that Xu Duchong stumbled upon a video.

[Interactive Video] [The Day of Great Joy] Random Options + Multiple Endings + Easter Eggs, giving you a completely different immersive experience

“What’s so good about interactive videos?”

He had watched some when the genre first emerged; topics like how to calm an angry girlfriend, a day in the life of a cat, or figuring out who the murderer was.

To be honest, most of these videos had bland plots, just adding water to the video, and he had paused for about three minutes just to watch the big and fair-skinned female UP hosting on the screen.

He was about to scroll past and check out the next one when Xu Duchong noticed the UP’s name.

Motionless

“Well played.”

Xu Duchong blurted out in admiration.

He had followed this UP before, starting from their Jiangcheng Grand Theater video, and the reason was, of course, that he lived in Jiangcheng himself.

When Xu Duchong first entered the university, he had heard many legends about Jiangcheng.

Such as the tales that Jiangcheng University’s dormitory buildings were built over ancient battlefield relics, requiring the yang energy of male students to suppress the numerous restless spirits; or that there was a female student who had died for love in the school’s rear lake, and a woman in red could often be seen at the Lake Heart Pavilion late at night; or that Building One’s peculiar structure resulted in students jumping off it each graduation season.

Jiangcheng University seemed to be the center of all these strange rumors. How odd.

Anyway, Xu Duchong was very interested in such supernatural and occult incidents, which is why he followed Lu Ban.

“It’s free to watch, so why not take a look?”

With this thought, Xu Duchong opened Lu Ban’s video.

In an instant, a barrage of comments flooded in.

Congratulations on finding the treasure of the site!

Is there any expert who has figured it out? Share some tips, please.

Just a friendly reminder, high energy ahead!

Why is everything this UP does so Netherworld-esque, I’ve been stuck looping this video for three hours!

Coming back from the 46th ending, the late plot is phenomenal, but I still haven’t figured it out.

“Is it an adventure mystery category?”

After the initial introduction, Xu Duchong incarnated as a Detective named Cui Siter. In the video, he was Lu Ban’s fellow traveler, sitting in a fog-enveloped carriage, hearing the coachman say he needed to use the bathroom.

The scene started to slow down, and Xu Duchong noticed that options appeared in the corner of the video.

Follow the coachman

Stay put and observe

“Nonsense, of course I’ll follow him. This kind of plot that just happens for no reason is definitely suspicious.”

Xu Duchong chose to Follow the coachman.

He saw the perspective move forward as he followed the coachman into the thick mist.

He watched the coachman simply taking a leak, and as the fog grew thicker, it shrouded the coachman’s figure.

In the blink of an eye, the coachman who had been right before Xu Duchong’s eyes disappeared without a trace.

“!”

Cui Siter immediately turned around in the video, but simply couldn’t find any trace of the carriage.

In that deep fog, everything quickly faded away.

[Curiosity killed the cat, sometimes ignorance is bliss.]

[BAD END: 01]

“Damn!”

Xu Duchong didn’t expect to hit a death ending in less than two minutes.

“Why would following it lead to death, too? Isn’t this the moment when you’re supposed to explore?”

He restarted the video.

As usual at the beginning, he decided this time to stay put and watch.

But when the coachman went to the toilet, that previous option didn’t appear!

“Damn, is this a random choice?”

Xu Duchong saw the coachman disappear into the fog and imagined that he probably disappeared in the same way just before. There’s something seriously wrong with this fog!

He honestly stayed inside the carriage, and at this moment, the screen slowed down again.

[Let Lu Ban drive]

[Drive yourself]

Xu Duchong thought it over, deciding it would be better to observe things from behind and to let Lu Ban drive.

He chose the former.

The carriage began to move through the fog with unabated speed.

Xu Duchong saw something flash by in the fog; he didn’t get a clear look and immediately hit pause.

Then he saw, in that white expanse of fog, some jagged stone pillars, faintly visible, forming a ghastly shape.

“Where was this filmed?”

As Xu Duchong pondered, he saw the camera shake violently, the carriage flipped over, and the view turned red.

[Trust is good, but first ensure the other person has a driving license for carriages.]

[BAD END: 04]

“???”

So it turns out the uploader doesn’t know how to drive a carriage?

Xu Duchong felt this video was really messing with him mentally.

Moreover, it jumped from bad ending 1 straight to bad ending 4. Where did bad endings 2 and 3 go?

Is this some kind of interactive video version of A Thousand Ways to Die?

He didn’t rush to restart but instead checked the video comments.

Interactive videos, simply put, don’t have that many branching paths. There are probably just three or four endings in total. If you fast-forward quickly enough, many can find the strategy to reach the correct ending on their first try.

Although spoilers are not great, after being messed with mentally, Xu Duchong still wanted to see what the heck the ending of this darn video was.

After all, the video had already been posted for two days. It should have been thoroughly played out by now.

But when he saw the comments under the video, Xu Duchong was dumbfounded.

[Damn, has anyone achieved the true ending? I’ve been trying for two days, tried all the options I could but still ended up dead in the end.]

[This must be a true random choice. I tried twice with the exact same choices, but for some reason, it completely changed later on!]

[I strongly suspect the uploader didn’t actually make a true ending. He always enjoys messing with Netherworld stuff; who knows, maybe even the ending didn’t come back from the Netherworld this time.]

[Together with friends, we analyzed a few points. First, if you shouldn’t tempt fate, don’t tempt fate. Next, when it’s time to explore, go boldly. Finally, when is it tempting fate and when is it exploration? We have no idea.]

After scrolling through several pages and reading those top-voted, popular responses, he realized one fact.

The video had been posted for two days and not a single person had reached the true ending?
