Chapter 3 – Comfort Trip
Part 1
The town was filled with Christmas spirit.
Yuzuki had returned to his parents’ house, where he was talking with his father, Teruyoshi.
“So, how was Yuuya Tenjou?”
“…”
When asked directly, Yuzuki fell silent, his expression indecipherable.
Seeing Yuzuki’s reaction, Teruyoshi pressed him further.
“What’s wrong? Did you fail to make contact?”
“No, I managed to make contact.”
“Then you must have been able to confirm it. What kind of existence is he? Did his spiritual power awaken?”
Teruyoshi asked eagerly. But Yuzuki shook his head.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t sense any spiritual power, or even a trace of any other kind of power, from his body.”
“What?”
Teruyoshi was surprised by Yuzuki’s unexpected report.
“That’s ridiculous. According to the star reader, he should have definitely awakened.”
“However, he was definitely an ordinary person, and I couldn’t sense any such power.”
“Hmm…”
“With all due respect, is it possible that the star reader was wrong?”
Just as Yuzuki was about to say that, he felt pressure unlike anything he had ever felt before. He was thrown to the ground.
“Ugh!”
“Keep your mouth shut. The Komyouin family’s star readers have never been wrong. You are not in a position to make such a rash judgment.”
“I… I beg your forgiveness…”
Yuzuki apologized in a strained voice, and the pressure dissipated as if it were a lie.
“Don’t ever say that again.”
“Yes.”
“Hmph. More importantly, you said you couldn’t sense any spiritual power. It’s possible that Yuuya is suppressing his power on purpose. But to do that, he would need someone to teach him how. The power we wield cannot be used without instruction.”
As Teruyoshi said, special powers, such as spiritual power, which have been passed down in Japan since ancient times, could not be used properly without training. If used incorrectly, one could be consumed by the power and transformed into a monster or an evil spirit.
Of course, they also wanted to keep Yuuya from being taken by another family. More than that, though, they wanted to protect him at all costs so that someone with powerful spiritual power like Yuuya would not turn into a monster.
However, according to Yuzuki, Yuuya was likely already able to control his power.
“Hmm… According to our shadows, the government hasn’t made contact with him yet. It doesn’t seem like he’s learning how to use his power from anyone. Moreover, there have been instances where he almost noticed our shadows.”
The Komyouin family’s intelligence unit was monitoring Yuuya’s movements, but there were no signs of anyone making contact with him.
Furthermore, Yuuya was not always on guard, so he was unaware that he was being watched. However, when he used powers he didn’t want others to see, such as the Item Box, he naturally became alert to his surroundings, forcing the shadows to suspend their surveillance.
“This is strange. Usually, humans can’t sense the presence of shadows, but he might be able to. In any case, if he can notice the shadows, there is a high possibility that Yuuya is hiding his powers.”
With that, Teruyoshi gave Yuzuki a new order.
“Yuzuki, you must get closer to Yuuya and discover the secret of his powers. If necessary, you may use your own body. In fact, that would be quicker.” [T/N: Confirmed, isn’t it? Lol.]
“Father, that’s…”
Yuzuki tried to say something, but he couldn’t bring himself to speak and fell silent.
…Originally, Yuzuki was expected to become the next head of the Komyouin family. However, for some reason, Teruyoshi began to treat him with contempt.
Nevertheless, Yuzuki continued to work hard to be recognized as the next head of the family. He thought he had finally made Teruyoshi acknowledge his existence.
Seeing Yuzuki remain silent, Teruyoshi snorted.
“Hmph… When you were born, I was trembling with anger, but now it’s just right. According to the shadows, Yuuya Tenjou is practically estranged from his family. Therefore, if we can use you to bring him into our fold, the Komyouin family will flourish even more. Yuzuki, I have high hopes for you.”
“…”
With those final words, Teruyoshi vanished from Yuzuki’s sight like mist.

Oki, the director of the Special Mutant Countermeasures Bureau, checked her appearance in the mirror.
“All right, this outfit should be fine!”
She was wearing a knit shirt and a tight skirt with slits—an outfit that hardly seemed appropriate for work.
However, she had planned to wear it to make contact with Yuuya and recruit him to the Bureau.
“This way, I can show off my adult charm while appealing to his childish side… Ufu, ufufufu…”
Oki smiled foolishly, lost in her fantasies.
Then, she received a message from her watch-shaped device.
“Hello?”
“I-It’s an emergency!”
The panicked voice of one of her subordinates came through, and she looked dismayed.
“What? Another mutation? I’m off today. Just leave it alone.”
“A Level 4 mutation has been detected!”
“!?”
But when she heard the next words, Oki’s expression changed.
“Level 4?”
In the few years since mutations had begun to be detected, only a handful of Level 4 mutations had been observed.
If the Level 3 giant mannequin they had faced last time had the power to destroy an entire town, then a Level 4 mutation was a being with the terrifying power to destroy an entire country.
Though there was only one level of difference, there was an overwhelming difference in power.
Oki immediately changed into her suit and rushed out of the house.
“Where is it? Has it already happened?”
“N-No, it’s still in the early stages, but it’s definitely Level 4! As for the location…”
Just as the man was about to continue, Oki’s watch-like device received a new notification.
She immediately checked it, and it showed the location where the early signs had been detected: a snowy mountain in Japan.
Upon confirming the location, Oki grimaced and clicked her tongue.
“Damn… This is getting serious…”
It had not yet been fully determined, but it was believed that mutations occur in places where strong thoughts or energy accumulate. Mutations that occurred in those places were analyzed as being caused by the thoughts or energy contained within a medium.
This was precisely the case with the giant mannequin, which mutated after thoughts gathered in a closed shopping mall took root within it.
The location where the signs were detected this time was a snow-covered mountain.
The mountain has seen several missing persons and deaths every year, so it’s already a place where strong thoughts tend to gather.
If mutations were to occur there, and if a powerful Level 4 mutation were to emerge…
“Nature itself might mutate.”
If nature were to mutate, it would pose a threat to the entire nation.
Oki immediately issued instructions to the staff who had contacted her.
“Summon all unit commanders immediately. Will Sakaki-san make it in time?”
“No, it’s too late to stop the mutation now!”
“Damn it! He’s never around when we need him…”
Oki cursed under her breath as she hurried toward headquarters. freewebnoveℓ.com
