Chapter 38: Debrief

It was eight o’clock in the evening in the Basa Air Base but it was still well-lit as the energy grid hadn’t gone offline yet.

In the command center of the Basa Air Base, Adrian stood in front of the main screen as multiple feeds were displayed in front of him.

Helmet cams.

UAV footage.

Gun camera from the Apache.

And the strike feed from the F-35.

Ryan, Jake, Noah, Mason, Cole, and Ethan stood behind him, still in their gear. Dust, dried blood, and soot marked their uniforms. No one had bothered changing yet.

"Now, let’s discuss what happened earlier," Adrian began. "As you can see on the footage, we just encountered a creature we hadn’t expected to appear. And that is the creature that damaged the Chinook, survived a lot of direct hits from the Apache and the F-35s."

"That thing is tough, not gonna lie," Ryan commented.

"It is tough but thankfully it can be killed by conventional weapons. Now let’s discuss that mutated zombie specifically, the Supreme Hunter. It’s the name given by the system. I think it’s kind of like a boss-level in a zombie apocalypse video game. It exhibits supernatural strength and speed, high durability and endurance and adaptive behavior," Adrian continued as he tapped the screen.

The footage shifted.

The moment the creature paused.

Then grabbed the infected.

Then fed.

"Pause."

The frame froze mid-motion, the creature’s jaw locked onto the neck of the infected.

Adrian pointed at it.

"It can also fucking regenerate by eating a zombie."

"Yeah, if one were to appear in a city full of defenseless civilians, that thing would have turned everyone," Noah commented.

"That’s right," Adrian concurred and added. "No wonder civilization collapsed instantly due to mutated variants. Which is why we need to come up with a threat assessment for every mutated variant we encounter. A catalog if you prefer. In that catalog, we will list down their capabilities and weaknesses so when we encounter one, we know how to deal with it accordingly."

He tapped again and a blank panel appeared beside the paused frame.

A header formed at the top.

SUPREME HUNTER — THREAT PROFILE.

Adrian pointed at it.

"We start with this one."

Fields began filling in one by one as he spoke.

"Strength—extreme. Capable of lifting and throwing debris with enough force to damage aircraft."

He switched the feed briefly to the impact on the Chinook.

The frame showed the chunk of concrete seconds before it hit.

"Confirmed anti-air capability."

Jake let out a low whistle. "So nothing low and slow near it."

"Correct," Adrian said.

He continued.

"Speed—high. Can sprint faster than vehicles in urban terrain. Can leap across buildings."

The screen showed the rooftop jump.

"Mobility—three-dimensional. Ground and vertical movement."

Mason nodded. "It uses structures like pathways."

"Yes."

Adrian tapped again.

"Durability—high. Survived 30mm, Hydra rockets, and a Hellfire missile."

Cole shook his head slightly. "That alone should’ve killed anything."

"It didn’t."

Adrian moved to the next field.

"Weakness—requires heavy ordnance. JDAM-level strike confirmed kill."

He paused for a second before continuing.

"Regeneration—conditional. Requires consumption of infected biomass."

Noah spoke. "So cut it off from other zombies."

"Exactly."

Adrian looked back at the group.

"That’s the key. You isolate it, you weaken it."

Ryan nodded once. "So we don’t fight it in crowded areas."

"No," Adrian said. "You don’t give it food. In fact, we should obliterate its food before engaging it. Circumstances differ when we encounter one. Now let’s move on to the next. The flying mutated variant, according to it, its name is ’Infected Flyer’. This one is easy as it can be killed by a single shot of Javelin missile and an M134 Minigun. As for small-arms weapons, I think you can deter it but not kill it in a single magazine."

He tapped again and another panel appeared beside the first.

INFECTED FLYER — THREAT PROFILE. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

A still frame of the mutated variant zombie captured by a Blackhawk helicopter on the day they were conducting the rescue operation.

Adrian pointed at it.

"Mobility—airborne. Fast dive speed, capable of rapid altitude changes. It uses hit-and-run attacks as I recalled when I was with Marco and his family."

He added. "Primary threat is surprise. It attacks from above, not from the front."

Ethan nodded. "You don’t see it until it’s already on you."

"Exactly," Adrian said.

He continued filling the fields.

"Durability—moderate. As I have said before, it is resistant to small-arms fire unless concentrated. As for its weakness, anti-armor and high-rate weapons. Javelin confirmed kill. M134 Minigun effective due to sustained fire. So far we only encountered two mutated variants. There could be more so whenever we are out there conducting missions such as scavenging, rescue operation, anything, we record it."

"Copy," they all intoned.

"Now, for the most basic ones, the zombies themselves," Adrian flipped the display to another feed.

Street-level footage filled the screen.

Dozens of infected moving through an open road moving fast and erratically.

"You’ve all seen them," he said. "But we’re putting it into the catalog properly."

He paused the footage.

A group of infected crowded near a building entrance.

Then he switched to another clip.

The one from earlier.

The base of the Bayshore building. Bodies piling, climbing over each other. Forming a mass, and scaling upward.

The frame froze with multiple infected stacked against the wall, hands clawing upward as more pushed from behind.

Adrian pointed at it.

"They move like a World War Z zombie," he said. "Fast and aggressive."

He tapped again.

A new panel appeared.

STANDARD INFECTED — THREAT PROFILE.

"Speed—moderate to high. Faster than a normal human in short bursts. As for their behavior—it reacts to any stimulus, drawn to sounds. Mobility, well they can run but we don’t know if they can swim. Durability—they are low as they can be killed by melee and small-arms weapons," Adrian reported.

He continued in another slide. "Now, for the mode of infection. As far as we know, they can only infect others through bite so don’t get bit. We don’t know if getting scratched by it can also infect or its blood entering our mouth. But we all know that any part of the zombie is compromised. And I think that should wrap up our debrief. Let’s eat some dinner as I am getting hungry."
