I Received System to Become Dragonborn-Chapter 1296: Distraction
Eccar remained in the shadows of the twisted tree while the night slowly deepened around the canyon.
Hours passed.
The torches along the stone platforms flickered steadily in the darkness, casting long wavering shadows along the canyon walls.
The guards never abandoned their vigilance. Every few hours, small groups rotated positions.
Some stepped away from the watch posts while others replaced them, ensuring that the canyon remained constantly monitored.
Not a single moment passed without someone watching.
Eccar observed the pattern in silence.
"This is annoying," he thought.
He needed to get inside the canyon and inspect the real site hidden within, but barging in and defeating the guards would only create unnecessary problems. If a fight broke out here, the people behind this place would immediately increase their defenses across the other sites as well.
That would only make the larger mission harder.
Eccar sighed slowly and rubbed the back of his neck.
Then he pushed himself off the tree branch and landed lightly on the ground.
"No point sitting here forever," he thought.
He walked back toward the edge of the ridge and looked down into the canyon again. The guards continued their patrols, completely unaware of him.
Then an idea appeared in his mind. A distraction.
He needs to create something large enough to draw the guards away from their posts, but not dangerous enough to cause real casualties.
Eccar nodded slightly. For now, it was the best plan he had.
Quietly, he unfurled his wings. The massive Dragon wings spread silently behind him, catching the cold night air.
With careful control, he lifted into the sky and glided down toward the forest below him without making a sound.
Once beneath the canopy, he began moving through the wilderness again.
This time he did not fight the beasts.
Instead, he gathered them.
Using faint pulses of his Dragon aura and subtle Magical pressure, he stirred the creatures hidden throughout the lower forest.
Boars, wolves, horned deer, giant lizards, and many other Magical beasts began emerging from their dens.
Eccar intentionally avoided the strongest predators he had fought earlier.
He mostly gathered weaker beasts. Creatures strong enough to cause panic but not powerful enough to truly threaten the guards.
Soon dozens of beasts followed him. Then hundreds of them.
The ground trembled as the growing herd moved through the forest, shaking branches and rustling leaves.
Eccar concealed himself with a layer of Magic, hiding his presence as he flew slowly above them.
Guided by his invisible influence, the beasts began moving up toward the ridge.
By the time they reached the upper forest, the noise alone was enough to shake the entire area.
At the rim of the canyon, two guards felt the vibrations beneath their feet.
"Did you feel that?" one of them asked.
His companion frowned and looked around.
"Is the obelisk acting up again?"
"I don’t know—"
Then the second guard looked up toward the ridge.
His eyes widened.
Dozens of Magical beasts were suddenly climbing over the ridge, charging down toward the canyon paths.
They have no idea that something unseen seemed to be guiding them.
The moment the beasts began pouring over the ridge, the guards froze in shock.
For a small second, none of them moved.nThen the chaos erupted.
"Magical beasts!" one of the guards shouted, his voice cracking through the quiet night. "They’re coming from the ridge!"
Another guard immediately grabbed the horn hanging beside the watch post and blew into it with all his strength.
A deep alarm echoed across the canyon.
The sound rolled through the stone walls like thunder.
Within seconds, other horns answered from different watch posts along the canyon paths.
The calm night shattered.
Guards rushed out from the small structures built along the stone ledges. Some had clearly been resting between their shifts, but the alarm dragged them out immediately. Armor clattered as they grabbed weapons and ran toward the defensive positions.
"What’s happening?!"
"Beasts from the ridge!"
"How many?!"
"Too many!"
The first wave of creatures was already racing down the slopes, their hooves and claws pounding against the stone paths.
Boars charged forward while the wolves leapt between the rocks, their snarls echoing through the canyon.
Torches shook as guards scrambled into formation.
More horns sounded.
Orders began flying from the watch captains as they tried to organize the defense.
Above them, hidden in the darkness of the night sky, Eccar floated silently.
His wings moved slowly as he maintained his position in the air.
A faint concealment spell wrapped around his body, bending the light and dulling his presence.
It was not a powerful concealment technique.
Under normal circumstances, the guards would have sensed him immediately, especially when he got close to them.
But now their attention was completely focused on the charging beasts.
Eccar watched the growing chaos below and allowed a small smile to appear on his face.
Guards continued pouring out from the larger buildings deeper within the canyon, rushing toward the ridge to reinforce their comrades. Exactly as he hoped.
Now the entrance area was becoming less guarded.
Eccar narrowed his eyes as he studied the shifting patrol lines and the gaps forming between them.
The distraction was working. Now all that remained was slipping inside.
Eccar waited a little longer in the air, watching the chaos unfold below.
More guards rushed toward the ridge to deal with the sudden wave of Magical beasts. The narrow stone paths filled with shouting soldiers and the sound of weapons clashing against claws and horns.
Torches swayed wildly as men ran from one platform to another.
Exactly as he had hoped.
The center of the canyon was becoming increasingly empty.
Eccar folded his wings slightly and glided downward, keeping his body wrapped in the thin layer of concealment Magic.
The spell was not strong enough to hide him from focused detection, but with the guards distracted by the attacking beasts right now it was more than enough.
He descended along the shadowed canyon wall, careful to avoid the torchlight.
Within seconds, his boots touched one of the lower stone platforms without making a sound.
Eccar crouched briefly and scanned the surroundings.
No one was looking his way.
Most of the guards had already rushed toward the ridge entrance to deal with the beasts flooding down from above.
Keeping close to the shadows, he moved quickly across the stone path toward the structure in the center of the canyon. The building that the guards seemed to protect the most.
When he reached the wall, he slipped through the half-open doorway and quietly entered the building.
