Chapter 611: For Better or Worse

A deep frown creased Xie Lian’s brow as she followed behind Adam. Though they had to kill the two women, the method bothered her.

He had not taken a second to hear their last words, although they were at his mercy. Her lips twisted when he retrieved their spatial ring without batting an eye. Was this how cultivators raised by a righteous sect should act?

She couldn’t help but ponder the question before she shook her head. These were the despicable methods of demonic cultivators and mages, not the ones she had learned her entire life. Yet, she knew Adam had a good heart and sold his quality pills cheaply to protect the disciples’ health.

Curious about the discrepancy, she coughed to catch Adam’s attention and asked.

"I get you’re not a hero, but why didn’t you give them a chance to speak?"

Adam frowned. "Would that have changed the outcome?"

Xie Lian shook her head. "They had to die or they would have brought reinforcement."

"Would they have felt better if I told them how brave they were? If I had sold them false hope by smiling and acting like a friend? I don’t understand why you try to sugarcoat killing. In fact, I find your methods more cruel than mine."

His eyes narrowed, and his voice darkened. "I gave them a swift and painless death before they could despair and left their corpses intact for her sect to bury. That’s my way of being merciful."

Xie Lian paused, internalising his word with a raised brow. They sounded wise yet felt wrong simultaneously because they left no place for compassion, redemption, or acceptance. But was it bad?

"I don’t know. They attacked us during an official competition, not as criminals. I feel they deserved a minute to speak."

Adam waved his hand, two lifelike apple illusions forming before them.

"Did you know I love green apples? Misha, on the other hand, prefers red ones. The world is not black or white; people have different views. Depending on each situation, we can only do what we feel is right. And with how panicked they were, I guarantee they wouldn’t have accepted their deaths or spoken their last words lucidly."

Xie Lian nodded, understanding he had been more thoughtful than she had initially believed. And somehow, the apple explanation convinced her.

"The realm would become quite boring if we all were the same." She smiled, remembering Ye Feng’s words. "What is the Earth Ye Feng mentioned, and what’s the tower ranking?"

Before he could answer, her eyes widened, and she exclaimed. "I heard that from this monstrous core disciple generation! They joked about a tower’s sixth floor or something a few years ago."

Adam tucked his fingers around his chin, his jaw clenching. That was why Xian Yunxu’s name rang a bell the first time he heard it: her name was displayed on the ranking. He just forgot about it—like anyone under Ye Feng.

"Troublesome," he muttered, his steps hastening. "We can’t waste a second."

He simultaneously summoned his long-forgotten chat box and cursed at the messages.

[Ye Feng: We all agree to put the competition aside until we hunt down the mage. Right, Yunxu?]

[Xian Yunxu: I’ve investigated this bastard for the past year. I don’t care if he’s from my sect. I’ll kill him with my own hands.]

He clicked his tongue and answered, refusing to remain passive.

[Adam: What a sore loser. You wasted your time just because I killed Baldur before you? Everyone calls you a mad dog... I guess they were right. To the others: I’m not an enemy. Spare yourself or meet your end. The choice is yours.]

With a snap of his fingers, the chat box dissipated as the other summoned barrage of curses landed on empty air. But he knew they wouldn’t heed his warning and upturn the palace to find him.

’I don’t want to kill them.’ He bit his lip, a bitter taste filling his mouth. Prometheus had given everything and more to reincarnate them. He wouldn’t trample his legacy without a solid reason now that he knew their origins.

He took a deep inhale, mana rumbling in his lungs before his roar thundered throughout the palace.

"I’m exposed, Misha. Complete a trial and join me as fast as possible!"

Xie Lian’s palms trembled over her ringing ears as he protected them with a mana bubble and raised his leg.

BAM

With a power stomp, vibrations shook the ground as he used his improved echolocation mana technique. After all, sounds were vibrations, too.

The corridors, gardens, rooms, and nearby disciples unfurled in a three-dimensional map in his mind as he lifted Xie Lian and bolted to the closest open one.

"What’s the trial?" His fingers whitened around the doorway, his voice cracking.

A woman wearing a lapis-lazuli crown over a peach tattoo raised her brow.

"Step inside to discover it."

"Shit." He bolted to the next open room without looking back, receiving the same infuriating answer as the enemy disciples drew dangerously close.

Their raging life force already caused the air to thicken, forcing him to make a decision.

A steely glint flashed in his eyes as he warned the pale Xie Lian.

"I’ll enter the next room for better or worse. They’re after me, so stay outside."

The words struck her mind like a hammer. Her shoulders trembled, and her eyes softened as she returned his words. "I’ll stick with you for better or worse. Y-You’re my only friend."

He nodded, lunged into the next room, slammed it shut, and leaned against the wall.

Heavy stomps echoed outside before voices followed.

"He’s inside. Break down the door!"

Five voices tinted with fear echoed simultaneously.

"Don’t, you fools! The guardian will eviscerate us before we step inside!" fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

Adam snickered and ignored them, his eyes glinting a malevolent light. ’Let’s see how long I can waste their time. Hahaha.’

He’d get his fourth clue by completing this trial. If Misha heard him, she’d bring the fifth soon enough, while the others paced before the door.

With a single provocation, he had killed any prospect of losing the blessed land without anyone noticing it. Well, that was if he didn’t die in this trial...
