Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The End of Lich Lord Vorthos

The march to the Lich Lord’s fortress was entirely uncontested.

The Scourgelands were empty. The thick, necrotic fog that usually concealed the undead swarms had burned away completely with the death of the Bone Dragon.

The black ash underfoot crunched loudly under the weight of the Grand Army.

Lucifer halted his forces at the base of the jagged peak.

The fortress of Vorthos rose above them. It was a huge, sprawling structure made from fused black glass and rusted iron plates.

Tall towers shaped like jagged claws stabbed into the purple sky. The massive iron gate at the entrance stood wide open.

"It’s a trap," Elara said flatly. The Fallen Valkyrie sat on her Nightmare Steed, her silver spear humming with celestial light.

"He knows we are here. Leaving the gates open is an invitation to be slaughtered in a choke point."

Lucifer agreed. His eyes scanned the dark towers.

He did not need the army for this. The ten thousand Awakened mercenaries had survived the Soul Siphons, but they would be useless in a confined boss arena.

The Aether-Steel Dragoons were too large for the narrow, spiraling corridors of the keep.

The Arch-Seraphs were his ultimate trump card; he wasn’t going to waste them clearing hallways.

Lucifer raised his hand.

"The army holds this position," Lucifer ordered, his voice echoing back to Lady Scarlett and the Vanguard captains.

"Establish a hard perimeter around the base of the mountain. Nobody goes up. Nobody comes down."

Lucifer dismounted his Nightmare Steed. He dismissed the beast into mist.

"You’re going in alone?" Sarah asked, her voice filled with concern. The Star-Touched Oracle sat on a nearby rock, leaning heavily on her Scepter of Cosmic Alignment.

"I am," Lucifer confirmed. He drew his longsword. The Carnage Core pulsed with a steady, dull red light, waiting to be fed.

"He is a Lich Lord," Elara warned, stepping forward. "He will not fight you with a sword. He will use high-tier death magic. He will bend the rules."

"I am a Void Arcanist," Lucifer said. A cold smirk crossed his face. "I rewrite the rules."

Lucifer activated the Zephyr’s Grace Emblem.

He became very fast like light. He sprinted up the steep, jagged path leading to the fortress gates.

The incline was incredibly sharp, but the Warlord’s physical strength and the god-like speed of the emblem made the climb effortless.

He hit the top of the path and shot straight through the open iron portcullis.

The inside of the fortress was freezing. The walls were covered in thick black frost. The only light came from dim, pulsing green runes carved into the floor.

Lucifer ran up a huge, spiraling staircase made of smooth bone, taking five steps at a time. The air grew colder and heavier with each floor he climbed.

The pressure of the death magic was intense, trying to crush his lungs, but Lucifer’s Warlord core, now at Level 50, ignored it completely.

He reached the highest tower. The Throne Room of Decay.

Lucifer kicked the heavy iron double doors off their hinges. The metal flew across the room and slammed into a stone pillar with a loud crash.

The Throne Room was circular and massive. The ceiling was open to the sky. In the center of the room sat a throne made entirely of fused human skulls.

Sitting on the throne was Vorthos.

The Lich Lord was not a giant skeleton like Lord Vane. Vorthos was about the size of a normal man. He wore clean, deep purple robes that seemed to swallow the light around them.

His face was hidden behind a smooth, blank mask. Only his eyes could be seen—two small points of bright green fire. He held a staff made of twisted black iron.

"You’re bold, Warlord," Vorthos’s voice echoed through the cold air. It was smooth and calm, coming from the walls instead of his mouth. "You broke my vanguard. You destroyed my pet. And now you walk into my sanctum."

Vorthos slowly stood up.

[System Warning: Boss Encounter Initiated!]

[Entity: Vorthos, Lich Lord of the Scourgelands (Level 55 - Epic Boss)]

[Status: Full Mana.]

"I don’t walk into sanctums," Lucifer replied softly. "I clear them."

Lucifer lunged. He activated Zephyr’s Grace, crossing the fifty feet between the doors and the throne in a fraction of a second.

He brought his longsword down in a brutal, two-handed overhead strike aimed directly at the Lich’s featureless mask.

The sword hit an invisible wall of force three feet from Vorthos’s face.

CLANG.

The impact was loud. Sparks scattered across the stone floor. The raw power of the Carnage Core surged, trying to break through the barrier, but the magic was too strong and dense.

Vorthos did not even flinch. He raised a single finger.

A wave of intense, freezing death energy burst from the Lich’s hand.

Lucifer’s Warlord instincts fired. He channeled Void Step instantly.

The space twisted. Lucifer vanished, reappearing ten feet back just as a huge spike of jagged black ice shot through where his chest had been.

The ice slammed into the floor, instantly freezing a wide area of solid stone.

"You are fast," Vorthos noted calmly. The green fire in his eyes pulsed. "But you are predictable."

Vorthos slammed his iron staff against the floor.

The whole Throne Room shook. The pale green runes carved into the walls flared brightly.

[System Warning: Epic Spell Cast - Domain of the Dead.]

[Effect: Reanimates all fallen entities within the immediate vicinity. Applies a continuous 10% movement speed reduction to all living targets.]

The stone floor cracked. Six massive, armored skeletal knights tore themselves out of the rock. They were not standard undead.

They were elite Death Knights, wielding heavy greatswords and glowing purple shields.

Lucifer felt a sudden, heavy pull on his muscles. The speed debuff tried to pin him to the floor.

"Gravity Crush," he whispered.

He didn’t aim at the Lich, he aimed at his own feet.

A tiny gravity well appeared right under his boots. The intense, localized gravity canceled out the debuff, holding him firmly in his own space. He moved perfectly.

The six Death Knights charged.

Lucifer met them head-on. The red light of the Carnage Core flooded his longsword. The True Damage cut cleanly through the first two knights, slicing through their purple shields and heavy plate armor as if they were made of air.

The top halves of the skeletons slid off their legs, instantly turning to dust.

Lucifer spun, bringing his heavy iron gauntlet around. He channeled raw Void Arcanist magic into his fist and punched the third knight squarely in the chest.

BOOM.

The Void magic hit the knight so hard it caved in his chest, blasting a hole clean through the undead creature and driving splinters of bone deep into the wall behind him.

"Your tricks are useless, Warlord!" Vorthos roared.

The Lich Lord floated into the air, hovering high above the throne. He raised his iron staff with both hands. The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense.

The green fire in his eyes expanded, completely engulfing his featureless mask.

[System Warning: Ultimate Spell Charging!]

[Spell: Necrotic Singularity (Epic)]

[Effect: Creates a massive implosion of death magic. Vaporizes all matter within a 500-meter radius.]

"I will turn this entire mountain to ash!" Vorthos screamed. "You cannot dodge the end of the world!"

Lucifer looked up. A huge, spinning vortex of sickly green and black energy was forming above the Lich’s staff. It was unstable, buzzing with enough raw power to tear the top half of the peak away.

Lucifer knew Vorthos was right. He couldn’t outrun a 500-meter explosion. His Void Step range was limited to a hundred meters. Even with Zephyr’s Grace, he would be caught in the outer edge of the blast.

But Lucifer didn’t plan on running.

He dropped his longsword. The weapon clattered loudly against the stone floor.

Vorthos laughed. The sound echoed wildly from the swirling green vortex. "You surrender? You drop your blade before the master of death?"

Lucifer didn’t answer. He opened his Dimensional Vault.

He grabbed a single, small item he had acquired from a stolen bandit chest back near the Citadel.

Lucifer pulled his hand out.

He held a perfect, silver sphere. It was the size of an apple, covered in intricate, pulsing red runes. It thrummed with a terrifying, contained heat.

[Item: Cataclysm Orb]

[Tier: Legendary Consumable]

[Effect: Unleashes a concentrated, unblockable explosion of pure solar fire. Radius: 10 meters. Damage: Absolute.]

Lucifer looked up at the Lich Lord. Vorthos was completely consumed by the charging of his Necrotic Singularity. The boss was locked in place, funneling all his mana into the massive spell above his head.

"I don’t surrender," Lucifer whispered.

His eyes locked onto the empty space directly behind Vorthos’s hovering back.

"Void Step."

Lucifer vanished.

He teleported exactly three feet behind the floating Lich Lord.

Vorthos gasped. The Lich sensed the sudden, massive shift in magic behind him, but he couldn’t turn.

If he broke his concentration, the unstable Necrotic Singularity above him would detonate prematurely and kill him.

Lucifer was completely suspended in the air.

Lucifer reached out with his left hand. He grabbed the back of Vorthos’s deep purple robes, yanking the Lich hard to break his balance.

With his right hand, Lucifer slammed the Cataclysm Orb directly against the back of Vorthos’s featureless mask.

He twisted the top half of the silver sphere, activating the three-second fuse.

Click. Click.

"You talk too much," Lucifer stated coldly directly into the Lich’s ear.

Click.

Lucifer let go of the robes. He immediately channeled his remaining mana into a final, desperate spell.

"Void Step."

Lucifer vanished again, teleporting exactly one hundred meters straight down.

He hit the stone floor hard, rolling to absorb the impact, and immediately threw himself behind a massive iron pillar.

In the Throne Room high above, Vorthos screamed.

The Cataclysm Orb detonated.

A blinding, impossible sphere of white-hot solar fire erupted from the back of the Lich’s mask. The legendary blast radius was only ten meters, but it was absolute destruction.

The solar fire completely engulfed Vorthos. It vaporized his robes, his staff, and his physical form in seconds.

The intense heat collided violently with the unstable Necrotic Singularity charging above his head.

The resulting secondary explosion tore the fortress apart.

Lucifer huddled behind the iron pillar in the lower armory. The entire mountain shook as if struck by a meteor.

The ceiling above Lucifer cracked, raining down massive chunks of black glass. The sound of tearing metal and collapsing stone was very loud .

The earthquake lasted for thirty seconds.

Then, the tremors stopped. The loud roar faded into the low rumble of falling dust.

Lucifer slowly stood up. His dark armor was covered in gray powder. His ears rang loudly, but his Warlord core, maxed at Level 50, rapidly healed the minor concussive damage.

A massive, glowing blue interface exploded across his vision.

[Epic Boss Eliminated: Vorthos, Lich Lord of the Scourgelands (Level 55)]

[Experience Gain Suspended: Mortal Level Cap Reached.]

[System Override: Major Threat Eliminated.]

[Zone Status Updated: The Scourgelands (Purified).]

Lucifer swiped the notifications away. He coughed, clearing the dust from his throat. He walked out from behind the iron pillar and looked up the ruined staircase.

The top half of the fortress was simply gone. The Throne Room had been completely erased by the solar explosion, leaving only a smoking crater open to the sky.

The bruising purple clouds above the Scourgelands were already breaking apart. Pure, golden sunlight was piercing through the gloom for the first time in a century.

Lucifer smiled. It was a satisfied smirk.

The Lich Lord was dead. The zone was cleared.

The war was won.
