Chapter 46: 46:Request.

The walk from the throne room was too quiet. Atheline looked around him in awe. He’s heard about the dark elf palace but he’s never imagined it to be magnificent.

Built deep within the third mountain and the tallest it was a marvel to even walk in. Dark halls with luminous small blue and violet vines snaked around the hallway while others hung from the ceiling providing a lighting that was just perfect.

Beside him Lilith glowed over the light, her grey skin reflecting the light, it looked like she was absorbing it even.

"I need to return," Atheline said breaking the silence.

"No, you will not," she refused immediately.

She didn’t look at him but continued as he came to an abrupt stop.

"You know I need to inform my parents, I’m sure everyone thinks I’m missing," he tried to convince her.

She stopped walking and turned to look at him.

"I’ve already informed them and I do not trust you alone."

Atheline looked at her in surprise.

"What? Why? I’ve done everything to prove I will not leave," he said calmly.

"I want you within my sight ... always, the last time I left you, you almost killed yourself," she replied calmly but her eyes spoke a different tune.

A chill ran down Atheline’s spine.

"That was not intentional and you know that, do not twist the situation."

"You thought of leaving me and that is enough, you will stay in this palace comfortably." She continued, " Your power isn’t stable yet and you might just get an attack. I need to be present to guide you, not among the elves."

"My mother can guide me," Atheline bluttered out before he could stop himself.

He felt his breath stop as her killing intent swept over the hallway, Atheline stumbled and held onto the wall.

"Do not speak of another woman in front of me or even anyone else you only belong to me and I’m the only one who knows what’s best for you."

Atheline nodded. She walked to him and rubbed his cheek with her thumb her killing intent reducing by the second until there is none of it.

"I just wanted their blessings for our wedding, we’ll be getting married isn’t that enough reason to trust me," Her face didn’t change but Atheline wasn’t about to leave empty-handed, " a letter then."

She was silent for a moment before she nodded. Atheline exhaled softly his heart falling back into his chest.

"Thank you," he smiled at her.

’Well, that went better than I expected’

He leaned in and kissed her, she responded immediately.

Back in the elven kingdom. The weather matched the gloom that had befallen the palace and three houses. Tension hung in the air and nobility could feel it within their homes and outside.

Dark elven soldiers murmured amongst themselves each reminiscing about one thing in particular.

The solar chamber was never truly still. Even in the silence the light flowed, golden, in veins through the chamber in patterns that only the Oldest Manipulators claimed they could understand.

A generation of forgotten spells woven into the very walls of the chamber.

Today the air felt heavy, suffocating even.

The king stood before the open arc of the chamber balcony, his hands clapped tightly behind his back and his gaze on the lit forest that became darker as it stretched out of the capital and into the lands.

He had been standing there for a while.

Behind him, the door opened softly.

"My king," the voice came, disciplined but it still carried the weight of age and wisdom.

"You have received it."

It wasn’t a question.

The man he had spoken to stepped forward and bowed briefly before straightening. His robes bore a familiar crest of a broken leaf and a plant shooting from it.

The man was Helmer Sunblade Atheline’s father.

"Yes," he paused then continued, " he’s alive."

The king exhaled softly, eyes closing for just a moment. News of his being missing had arrived, and half a day later news of him being found had come to him.

"Thanks the stars," he said in relief.

The relief didn’t last when Lord Helmer continued.

"Alive," He continued, voice tightening ever so slightly, "and within the domain of the dark elven queen. "

The king was quiet before he turned around to face him.

"What else?" He asked quietly.

The tension in the air was palpable strong enough to feel its weight.

"She has declared her intention to marry him."

The king frowned.

"Declared," he repeated.

"Publicly. "

The defeat in Lord Helmer’s voice was evident.

Before the king could respond the door was pushed open roughly again.

"She has no right."

The voice cut through the chamber, sharp and burning with anger. Blue flowing hair tied behind him, a small mustache, and a gait that showed his pride as the Northern Aetherion lord Elydrah’s father Lord Dusk.

The fury in him was almost spilling out.

"My lord," the king said calmly. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Lord Dusk didn’t even try to bow unlike normal, he was too furious to even do that.

"My son was promised that union, "he said, each word measured, "The negotiations made, bound through the Aether accords and the bloodline oaths. "

The world couldn’t run on emotions alone. It ran on agreements that couldn’t be broken at a moment’s notice.

"The convergence ritual was already being prepared," he continued," do you understand what this means to break something like that?"

Of course, the king knew.

The merging of Aether, light Aether, and dark Aether, wasn’t just symbolic but a form of power balance and an increase in the potential of creating heirs who could wield both powers.

This wasn’t a mere marriage but a foundation of something bigger and better supported by both their Gods but now it had been shattered by the whims of a woman in love.

"She has chosen differently," the king said in a measured tone.

Lord Dusk let out a homourless laugh.

"This is not a matter of choice," he started his eyes flashing," it’s a matter of consequences."

He turned his gaze to lord Helmer who was standing there quietly as an advisor should.

"And it seems your son has positioned himself at the centre of it."

Lord Helmer met his accusatory gaze with one masked with indifference but his clenched fist behind his back told his conflict.

"My son did not orchestrate this," he finally said breaking the tense silence.

"No," lord dusk said venomously," but he stands to benefit from this."

An uncomfortable silence ensued as they both stared at each other. The king’s gaze shifted between the two but he didn’t step forward to intervene.

Before it could escalate, another voice broke through.

"Benefit?"

All the men turned to the door.
