Chapter 51: 51:Last day.

The day of their departure came, and since most of the wedding procession was already at the elf kingdom, they didn’t have a lot to take with them.

Atheline sat on the balcony railings his gaze fixed on two children playing across him at the market.

They were following a glowing butterfly while laughing. The little thing managed to escape all their advances, despite its slow movement, clearly teasing them.

’It’s surprisingly normal’

The thought passed through him again. The third mountain, where the palace was built, was the largest of the four mountains, which meant he had the best view of the whole dark elf kingdom as it descended into the valley.

The door opened and gained his attention. Lily walked in dressed in her usual dark combat clothes and a coat pulled behind her.

She had just finished her last discussions before they left.

"What are you looking at?" She asked him while removing her coat.

Atheline turned his attention to the children below.

"Nothing, just children playing."

She narrowed her eyes and walked towards him. She glanced at them briefly before turning her attention to him.

Atheline leaned in and kissed her lightly then separated from her. They had already started to establish a routine in the little time they had lived together.

"How have you been?" He asked.

His hand rubbed her cheek softly while she leaned into his touch.

"I’ve finished all the negotiations with the kingdom, we will be wed in three days"

Atheline’s eyes twitched. He was genuinely looking forward to marrying her but the fact that he wasn’t a part of planning his own wedding really annoyed him.

It was truly dawning on him how controlling Lily was. He had tried but she had refused sighting that he was still weak from his shattered core and the fact that he had been assassinated.

Everything had truly escalated after the assassination attempt.

’If only I were stronger’

The powerlessness he was feeling was the only thing keeping him going. His core was starting to heal but he needed an Aether well to stabilise himself and Lilith had said he couldn’t use theirs since they were corrupted.

"Isn’t that the last day of the eclipse," he broke the silence under her gaze.

She nodded.

"At that time the eclipse will reach the middle of the valley and the goddess will judge our union," she said nonchalantly.

Atheline frowned.

"And what happens?"

"If she finds it satisfactory, we will get power but if she doesn’t, I don’t know."

Atheline held her shoulders in worry.

"Does this happen to everyone else?"

She shook her head.

"No, I made a deal with her and I just need to fulfil my part."

Atheline swallowed.

"What was the deal?"

She shrugged not answering him.

"Stop asking such depressing questions, it’s nothing serious, "she met his sharp eyes and rolled her eyes," I’ll tell you after the wedding, it’s nothing serious. "

Atheline nodded but it couldn’t leave his mind. Something so major a deal with their goddess had to come with a price and knowing her, something worse might just come out of it.

"Will you be meeting my parents?" He changed the subject.

She smiled and nodded.

"You said you wanted your parents’ blessings right?"

Atheline nodded.

"They’re important to me."

"If your parents don’t accept me," she asked curtly.

The mood dropped a little. Atheline pulled her to himself.

"I’ll always be on your side no matter what."

She wrapped her hands around his waist and chuckled.

"This is the first time someone has said that," she confessed quietly.

Atheline pulled her closer to him.

"Well, I’ll tell you every day if you want me to."

"Do not forget that," she said quietly.

Atheline chuckled softly," I’ll always be by your side." He repeated.

She didn’t answer but buried herself in his arms marvelling at his warmth.

The grand hall was filled with soft murmurs, and lights shone down on the lavishly dressed elves each one trying to outdo the other.

Nobles.

Both high elves and dark elves nobles interacted in the room but the distinction between the two was massive.

Everything about them screamed their differences except for the skin color, clothing was different, and even the way they spoke.

High elves carried themselves with elegance and a subtle sense of superiority while dark elves bulldozed around the room as they owned it.

Ministers interacted with each other, passing subtle words amongst themselves but the tension in the air was tangible.

At the throne, the king sat his gaze fixed on the door on his right, sat next to him was the queen, while on the left stood Lord Helmer, straight with his hands behind his back.

"When do you think they will arrive?" The king asked no one.

Lord Helmer’s eyes moved from his worried wife who was standing a few steps from the door to the king who had worry written on his face.

"They’ll be here your majesty, you mustn’t worry yourself too much," he comforted him but behind him, his fists were clenched.

Below the nobles also glanced to the door each of them waiting for the awaited guest.

The main characters of the banquet.

Then it came, hurried footsteps before the door was pushed open by two guards.

A hush fell on the hall when the two appeared.

Atheline and lilith next to each other their faces carrying composure.

Gasps filled the room especially from the high elves.

"Didn’t they say he would be scarred," one whispered.

"No, they say she would cripple him," another interjected.

"Be quiet!" Another shut them down.

Atheline and Lilith stepped into the hall ignoring the quiet whispering among the people present.

Lilith’s gaze swept through the whole place and settled in front of them on the king who was trying to hide his surprise.

At the top of the throne, the king stood up and stepped down the step but before he could take another step a figure rushed from the group of staring nobles towards Atheline.
