I Reincarnated as the World's Worst Healer-Chapter 84: Two Days Until the Wedding (5)
Thus, in the middle of the dining room, Ebony finished cutting Kanary’s clothes, revealing only the side of her torso.
"Alright, I’m going to make a cut. It’ll probably hurt, but not as much as what comes next, so take this," Ebony said as she folded a napkin several times and placed it in Kanary’s mouth.
After that, the blonde began touching the blue-haired girl’s skin. She felt her ribs, counting them one after another while recalling memories from her days studying medicine.
"(This will be dangerous... The pain will surely be horrible, like walking through hell... She could pass out from shock...)" the blonde thought while trying to come up with a way to ease the girl’s pain.
But it was already too late, so she ended up making a small cut between the patient’s ribs.
Blood began to flow, which worried Veronica, who bit her lower lip and clenched her fists in helplessness. However, Lucian placed a hand on the cat girl’s shoulder and their eyes met for a moment.
"Don’t worry... I know her methods are strange and look like abuse, but you have to trust her. I’ve seen her save lives with even fewer resources... She’ll save her, I promise," Lucian said with a firm voice and a gentle look.
Veronica tried to say something, but at that moment a heart-wrenching scream muffled by the napkin and the patient’s teeth filled the room.
Ebony had just inserted into the wound the hollow bone she had crudely improvised. It advanced centimeter by centimeter with care, since its width was beginning to make access to the rib cage difficult.
"Hold on!" Ebony, trying to focus, could clearly sense the inside of the girl’s body. Only one more centimeter was needed to reach the pocket of fluid crushing the girl’s lung, but Kanary, in pain, was moving in reaction.
"Hold her down, idiots! Can’t you see it hurts and she’s moving? I could kill her if she keeps doing that!" the blonde ordered.
Then she saw Veronica grab her friend’s hand, and Lucian, with an enchanted dagger, summoned roots that wrapped tightly around the girl’s body to keep her from moving.
This time, with determination, she pushed the hollow bone further until it reached the trapped fluid inside the girl. It began to flow out through the tube, a colorless liquid mixed with some blood.
Ebony ended up splattered while holding the tube firmly, but far from caring about getting dirty, the blonde didn’t allow the connection she had with the girl’s body to fade, because she needed to make sure every drop left the body.
After a few seconds of fluid draining and muffled screams accompanied by tears, the danger had passed. After closing the wound with bandages soaked in healing potion, the patient was completely cured.
"Ahh... that was ugly, but it’s... it’s done." Ebony sighed and wiped the sweat from her forehead while feeling her head spin slightly. After all, she was still suffering from the symptoms of Mage’s Sickness.
"How do you feel, Kanary?" Veronica asked worriedly while looking in disbelief at how her wounds were healed and only scars remained.
"Yes... I feel better... it’s just that I... I don’t think I can fight the sleep anymore..." the blue-haired girl said, her dress stained with blood and her eyes about to close.
"It’s okay, you can rest now, but I have to... to... stay by her side to monitor her con-condition."
Despite having used her spell only a few times compared to other occasions, it was still too much strain for her body, and Ebony collapsed on the spot.
"Shit... Daniel, lift her carefully," Lucian ordered while undoing the root spell, which withered and crumbled instantly.
"It’s fine, she’ll wake up... You—" Veronica looked worried as Kanary had also fallen unconscious.
"W-what do we do now? She said she had to monitor her!" the cat girl asked anxiously while grabbing the elf’s arm.
"We have no choice but to call a trustworthy Healer. Do you know one? Anyone."
"Are you serious? Those servants were supposed to be trustworthy. Kanary personally trains and selects them herself. I have no idea who we can trust now..."
"Then we either take the risk or let her die, so I don’t know what else to do. And if you go get her mother, maybe she could help. As far as I know, the ruling couple of this city had a Healer among them."
"That’s her father, and he’s not here... He left them years ago... Look, there’s no one, no one! So think! What does it mean to monitor her condition? Didn’t Ebony teach you anything about that stuff she does?"
Hearing those words, Lucian looked helplessly at the floor while briefly feeling the weight of being the group’s Healer.
"Then all we can do is wait for Ebony to wake up... We can’t do anything else. She’s very resilient, she’ll wake up soon—"
The elf’s words were interrupted by the sound of skin being slapped.
Daniel, with absolutely no compassion for his friend’s state, began slapping her several times and hard.
"Wake up, useless runt! Wake up before your patient dies because you didn’t!"
Lucian and Veronica watched the act with disbelief. For a moment they thought about stopping the boy, but seeing they had few options left, they decided to let him try.
"This spoiled brat... Wait, I’ve got an idea. Wait here and pray they have this ingredient in the kitchen," Daniel said before running off through the mansion.
"That boy... Do you think he knows what he’s doing?" Veronica asked while gently stroking Kanary’s hair.
"Yeah, I think so... He told us he lived alone in the forest, so I guess he knows a thing or two about survival... I hope," Lucian replied before kneeling and taking Ebony’s hand. The magic emanating from her was so weak it worried the elf.
However, without much delay, Daniel returned with a handful of dry red fruits along with a mortar to grind them. They looked withered and had a smell unlike any ingredient.
"Alright, now Lucian I need you to hold her when she wakes up... if she does, of course," the boy said as he broke the dried, elongated fruits open, revealing their yellow seeds.
"Do you know what you’re doing, kid?" Lucian asked with concern and doubt in his mind, since he had never seen that fruit before.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. My brother and I used to use this to wake our dad when he was about to die from drinking too much. Works great... well... we never tried it on someone else, and maybe these aren’t as strong as the ones back home..."
Daniel raised an eyebrow and tasted one of the seeds with his tongue. After that he shook his head several times.
"Yeah... better use all of them to make sure it works."
After a few seconds of grinding the seeds, the boy managed to turn them into powder and, with a bit of the soup still left on his plate, created a reddish liquid in the mortar.
He then poured that liquid into the girl’s mouth, and Lucian asked:
"Hey... what is that stuff?"
"It’s called firefruit. We ate it a lot at home. It’s spicy going in and spicy going out," he said with a grin.
"Going out?" Lucian asked, not understanding what he meant, until suddenly Ebony jolted awake, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"IT BURNS!"
