I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 38: A Self-Defeating Rumor
"Look, even if Ivy White really is the widow of a martyr... are we so sure her relationship with Director Forrest is completely innocent?"
There were some things they hadn’t thought about too deeply at first, but now, with Grace Winslow’s reminder, it all suddenly clicked for everyone.
Things that didn’t make sense before were now crystal clear.
Ivy White was kicked out by her in-laws but didn’t go back to her own family. That meant either her family was vicious and didn’t want their daughter, or there was something wrong with her story.
Otherwise, out of all the people she could have turned to, why did she go straight to Caleb Forrest?
And how could it be that just a few days after she arrived, Grace Winslow and Caleb Forrest were already talking about divorce?
If you thought about it carefully, Ivy White’s lies were riddled with holes.
It’s just that people are easily fooled when emotions are running high and don’t think about the details.
"So that Ivy White was just using us!"
"No wonder she came crying right at the workshop entrance. It was all on purpose!"
"How vicious!"
After a moment’s thought, everyone understood the real story.
This Ivy White had stolen Grace Winslow’s man and then spread rumors slandering her for having a promiscuous private life.
They knew all too well how vicious such rumors could be for a woman.
Just thinking about it now made them break out in a cold sweat.
If Grace Winslow had been a little more fragile and killed herself over it, every single one of them would have been an accomplice to her death.
"But you can’t blame it all on Ivy White, can you? Is Grace Winslow completely blameless? She did steal Ivy White’s job," an older female worker couldn’t help but speak up for Ivy.
"Who stole whose job?" Faye Lowell happened to be walking by and, hearing them gossiping, couldn’t resist asking.
"Faye, you work in the finance department. You tell us how Grace Winslow stole Ivy White’s job. Pushing a poor widow and her child to the brink of death... that’s just inhumane." The older worker’s eyes lit up when she saw Faye Lowell.
Faye Lowell now seethed at the mere mention of Ivy White’s name. "Don’t even start. Just talking about her is bad luck."
"Let me tell you, you all better stay far away from that Ivy White. She’s a total jinx."
"I’m starting to suspect she’s the reason her husband died."
"Her getting into our department was Caleb Forrest’s fault in the first place. He acted like a real scoundrel, taking the job Grace Winslow had worked so hard to get and just giving it to Ivy White."
"And what happened? Ivy White was only there for five days, and not only were the reports she made a complete mess that had to be redone, but she also cost our factory five thousand yuan!"
"That’s five thousand yuan!"
"Our jobs only pay thirty or forty a month. How long would it take us to earn five thousand yuan?"
"What? Ivy White made the factory lose five thousand yuan?"
Now everyone was really rattled.
If the factory’s profits were down, wasn’t it possible they wouldn’t get paid?
That was five thousand yuan!
"You bet. And what’s more, Caleb Forrest and Grace Winslow aren’t even divorced yet! While Grace was sick in the hospital, that Ivy White moved right into their house. Mrs. Sawyer next door told me herself, there’s a huge racket coming from there every single night." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
"So shameless. They were kind enough to take her in, and the moment she saw Grace was sick in the hospital, she went and seduced her husband." Faye Lowell huffed, hating Ivy White to her very core.
The thought of how Ivy White had made a mistake and then tried to pin the blame on her made Faye want to kill the woman.
The crowd of gossips at the entrance finally dispersed after getting their fill.
Grace Winslow had already tidied up and was lying down to sleep.
That night, she slept especially soundly.
She woke up bright and early the next morning. She first went for a run, then washed up, changed into her work uniform, and headed to the office.
