I Sell Bottled Water for Gold in Another World!-Chapter 240: A New World
"Brother Alex." Lucy voice was little more than a whisper, the breath seem to left a fog on the glass by the cold night as she spoke. "What... what are those?"
She pointed with a finger towards the light-illuminated towers that reached the night sky, their surfaces shining with a myriad of lights which seemed to change in a pattern beyond her understanding.
Alex stepped over to stand next to her at the floor to ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city night landscape of the Mumbai.
"Those are buildings, Lucy," he explained gently. "Structures where people live and work in this type of high-class society, you can think of it as a capital city of the kingdom of your world. Some of them house hundreds of families at once, stacked one above the other in what we call apartments."
"Hundreds?" Lucy’s voice cracked with disbelief. "Hundreds of families? In one building? But... but how is it possible? How can something so high even stand? Won’t it collapse over under its own weight?"
"Hahaa.. The materials that we use are much stronger than what you use," said Alex.
"For that reason, it’s not just that we have used bricks as the main building materials, but we have also used steels, concrete and with the engineering that we have developed over the years."
Lucy put her two hands on her forehead as she was unable to grasp all of it at once.
She looked out the window, and then back into the space they were in. Her brow furrowed in confusion.
"Also... Brother Alex," she said slowly, turning to face him with wide questioning eyes.
"Outside, it’s clearly nighttime. The sky is dark; the moon is out. But inside here..." She gestured around the brightly lit room. "It’s as bright as midday. Do you... do you have your own suns in your home too? Can you control them as well?"
Alex couldn’t help but give a chuckle at her imagination.
"No, Lucy, we don’t have suns inside we are not that advanced yet," he said with gentle amusement. "Although they do provide light, they’re not suns. They’re merely some gadgets that we use these days to light up our surroundings, just like your lanterns and oil lamps back home."
Lucy looked up at the ceiling with renewed curiosity, squinting slightly at its brightness.
"But Brother Alex," she asked, moving her head slightly to one side, "what do they use? Do they also burn the oil like our lamps?"
"No, they use something called electricity," Alex explained carefully. "It’s hard to explain... think of it like lightning, like those thunderbolts you see during storms. Except we’ve learned how to control it and use it in much smaller, safer way."
Lucy’s eyes were opened wide in impossible surprise and awe.
"Brother Alex, can you command the lightning?" she breathed hard, looking at Brother Alex with an awed look.
Alex paused at that.... If he has to explains all the workings of the light, about electricity just a few hours is not going to be enough, also he will be damn tired too.
And honestly, thinking about explaining to the her the entire workings of electricity was just going to be a huge hassle neither of us needed, okay?
So instead of that, he simply nodded.
"Yes," he said. "Something like that. We have learned to control it, to harness it, to make it work for us instead of against us."
"That’s...." Lucy seemed to find it hard to find her own appropriate words. "That’s incredible; I know that you are indeed powerful, but as powerful as this? Hmm, I have never imagined that my man of my dreams will be this powerful."
She continued to look around at the lights, but then her eyes came to rest upon the bed.
The large plush bed with a thick mattress and a pile of soft pillows appeared just too inviting, that simply could not be ignored.
Lucy couldn’t control herself.
With a small laugh she moved towards the bed, jumping on it as if she were a child, full of joy, discovering a great thing for the first time.
"Oh!" she gasped as she sank into the mattress, bouncing slightly from the impact. "Oh, Brother Alex! This is so comfortable and bouncy!"
She rolled onto the bed, spreading her arms wide and laughing with pure joy.
"Brother Alex," she said, turning her head, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him, "now I see the reason you don’t sleep in my world! If I could sleep in a bed like that, I would sleep nowhere else from now on! This is like sleeping on a cloud!"
Alex moved towards her as she sat by the bed, her face full of excitement as she appreciated what she saw. He laid beside her with his face almost touching her face as she sat by his side.
"Well," he said softly, looking at her with eyes locked in an unnerving intensity of gaze as he said. "Now that you know my secret, ’we’ can ’sleep’ here together ’every day,’ if you’d like."
"We..." Lucy’s voice came out as barely a whisper. "Sleep... everyday..."
The implications of these simple words came crashing over her like a wave. Her face flushed bright red, spreading from the cheeks to her neck.
She couldn’t look at his face, found herself staring instead at the ceiling. It seemed fascinating all of a sudden.
Seeing the shy and flustered look on the face of her, Alex could no longer control himself.
In one smooth motion, he pulled her into his embrace, drawing the blanket over both of them.
Lucy let out a small sound of surprise, but she didn’t resist, instead melting into his arms.
What happened next between them in the quiet privacy of that modern bedroom, wrapped in each other’s arms as the city lights sparkled outside the window, would fill hundreds of pages that need not be written.
There are moments that are too personal, too intimate, or too sacred to be shared with anybody else.
--------
The following morning, Lucy awoke with sunlight falling on her face.
She stirred slowly, consciousness returning in gentle waves. The first thing she noticed was that she was wrapped in nothing but a soft blanket, the fabric infinitely more comfortable than anything she’d ever felt before.
The second thing she noticed was that she was alone in bed.
"Brother Alex?" She said this in a sleepy tone, still half asleep as she slowly started to sit up and clutched her blanket to her chest.
"Good morning."
Alex’s voice came from across the room, and she turned to find he was walking towards her, tray in hand and a smile on his face.
He was already dressed in casual pants and shirt that bore no resemblance whatsoever with the dress she was used to seeing him wear in her world.
"I made breakfast," he said, placing the tray on the bed next to her. "I thought you might be hungry after all the activity last night."
Lucy blushed at that, but that didn’t stop her to look on the tray with curious eyes.
There was a plate of something that resembled a kind of cooked egg, although they were smoother and fluffier than the kind of eggs she had ever seen before.
Beside them were slices of bread that were perfectly square and evenly browned, unlike the irregular shapes of bread back home.
A glass containing just milk, placed adjacent to a bowl containing some weird grain with dried fruits in it.
She reached out tentatively toward a piece of toast, wanting to try something from his world.
Yet the instant she began to move, a severe pain pierced her areas below, leaving her stiff in a sharp intake of air.
Her face immediately turned red as the recollections from the previous night flooded back in full detail.
She turned back to glare at Alex while attempting to gather up as much dignity as she could while wrapped in only a blanket.
Alex met her glare with an amused expression, his eyes twinkling with barely suppressed laughter.
"I will not eat it," Lucy said stubbornly, crossing her arms over her chest, her face away from both Alex and the tempting breakfast.
"Oh, is that so?" Alex asked, his tone becoming playful.
He picked up a piece of toast and took a deliberate bite, making a show of how delicious it was. "Mmm, that’s too bad. I suppose I’ll just have to eat it all myself then."
He went to select the eggs next.
"You know, Lucy, This kind of food is nothing like you’re used to back home. These eggs are so delicious that you really shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try it. But if you’re sure you don’t want any..."
He raised a fork of fluffy scrambled eggs to his mouth.
Lucy sat and watched him eat. She knew her resolve was already starting to weaken. The food was clearly very enticingly inviting her with its amazing smell, and her stomach was not happy about the situation.
He ate again, closing his eyes with an exaggeration of delight.
"And this oatmeal...."
"Stop!" interrupted Lucy. She extended her hand to capture it from him. "Fine! I’ll eat it!"
But despite those words, there was no real anger in her voice.
Alex smiled, obviously pleased with himself, as he properly handed her the tray.
She took a small and tentative mouthful of the scrambled eggs. She immediately opened her eyes wide.
"Oh," she breathed. "Oh, that’s... that’s really good."
"I told you," Alex said smugly.
Lucy ignored him, too focused on experiencing the new flavours. She tried the toast next, marvelling at the crispy texture that gave way to soft bread inside.
Alex reached out to brush a strand of hair away from her face, tucking it gently behind her ear.
"You’ll get used to it.. If you are going to be living here you need to know this world."
