I Start with a Mysterious Island-Chapter 102: You Might Be Disappointed, He’s Just an Unambitious Salted Fish
CLICK.
The door opened, and Su Yue walked in. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, and she was dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans, a small bag in her hand.
Hearing the door open at the entryway, Zheng Qiuyi, who had been watching TV in the living room, immediately got up and walked over.
"Mom." Su Yue had just finished changing into her indoor slippers when she looked up and saw her mother standing in the distance, watching her.
"You’re back! Why couldn’t I get through to you just now?"
"My phone died... Mom, you must be hungry, right? Sit down for a bit. I’ll go to the kitchen and start making dinner right away."
"It’ll be seven by the time you’re done. Why don’t we just go out and find a restaurant?"
"I’ll just make some noodles tonight. It’ll be quick..." Su Yue said with a smile to her mom as she walked into the living room, bag in hand.
She placed her bag on the sofa, then opened it and took out her phone, which had automatically shut down because the battery was dead.
Seeing her daughter about to take her dead phone to charge it, Zheng Qiuyi said to her as she headed for the bedroom, "Su Yue, your friend dropped off a big bag of vegetables earlier. I put them in the kitchen for you."
Su Yue, who was on her way to her bedroom to charge her phone, stopped in her tracks. She turned to her mother and asked, puzzled, "A friend dropped off a big bag of vegetables?"
"Yes, he said his name is Lin Li. He’s your friend, right?"
"Oh, you mean him!" Su Yue nodded in sudden understanding. When her mom first mentioned a friend had brought vegetables, she thought it was Ms. Zhang from the next building, bringing her vegetables again.
Ms. Zhang from the building next door has a younger brother who’s a wholesale produce dealer. Every so often, he brings his sister a huge pile of vegetables.
But Ms. Zhang and her family can never finish it all, and it’s a waste to let the vegetables spoil.
So every time her brother delivers vegetables, Ms. Zhang shares some with her friends, including Su Yue.
Su Yue’s social circle was incredibly wide. She had only lived in the Happiness Garden District for two or three years, but she’d already made a ton of friends. Lin Li was extremely envious of how popular she was.
"I was going to pay your friend for the vegetables, but he insisted on not taking any money." As Zheng Qiuyi spoke, she watched her daughter’s expression, trying to read between the lines.
Su Yue’s expression didn’t change at all upon hearing her mother’s words. She just nodded and said, "Mom, why didn’t you ask him to stay for a while?"
"I did ask him to stay, but he said he had other things to do."
"What other things could Lin Li possibly have to do? He’s not working right now. All he does at home is play games; there’s nothing else for him to do."
’But why would he bring over a big bag of vegetables? This must be the first time he’s ever given me any!’ Su Yue muttered to herself before heading back to her bedroom to get the charger for her phone.
After plugging the phone into the charging cable, it had enough power to turn on.
DING-DONG.
The moment the phone, now partially charged, turned on, the notification sound for a WeChat message chimed.
Su Yue reached out with her slender, scallion-like fingers and tapped the screen. She saw the WeChat message from Lin Li and replied: My phone died. I just put it on the charger now. Thanks for the vegetables. I’ll cook for you sometime to thank you.
After she sent the WeChat message, Lin Li didn’t make her wait long this time. A reply came just a few seconds later.
Lin Li: K.
After reading Lin Li’s impossibly brief reply, Su Yue placed her phone on the nightstand to charge, then walked over to her closet, opened it, and took out a loose-fitting set of loungewear to change into.
After changing into her loungewear, Su Yue came out of her bedroom and went to the living room. She asked Zheng Qiuyi, who was sitting on the sofa watching TV, "Mom, how many days are you planning to stay?"
"Just for the night. Liu will be here to pick me up tomorrow morning." Zheng Qiuyi’s eyes didn’t move from the television as she casually replied.
Hearing that the family driver was coming to pick her mother up tomorrow morning, Su Yue couldn’t help but say, "Stay a few more days! What’s the rush to go back?"
"I’d love to stay here a few more days! But you know your dad. If I’m not home, he often forgets to eat until long after mealtime."
"Mom, you should try to persuade Dad! You can never earn all the money in the world, and he’s already made so much. He could ease up on the company’s business and let other people handle it."
"Sigh, you think I haven’t tried to persuade him? Every time I do, he just says, ’While I’m still young, I have to earn more money to provide for your dowry when you get married...’" Zheng Qiuyi said leisurely, glancing over at her daughter while her eyes remained on the TV.
"..."
When Su Yue heard her mother turn the conversation to her—and to the major life event of marriage, no less—she felt a headache coming on. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
So, she could only say helplessly to her mother, "Mom, I can earn my own money. Dad doesn’t need to worry about my dowry or anything..."
"Oh, you... You’re his only daughter. If he doesn’t spend the money he earns on you, who else is he going to spend it on?
Let’s not even talk about when you first started college. He was worried you wouldn’t be used to the school dorms, so he bought a villa for you near your university ahead of time, thinking you could move in after you started.
But what did you do? You insisted on living in the dorms. That villa has been sitting empty ever since he bought it. No one has ever lived there.
You said you didn’t like the villa, that it was too big and one person didn’t need to live in such a large house.
Fine. Then after you graduated and got a job as a teacher, your dad wanted to buy you a four-bedroom, two-living-room apartment in the city. But you refused that too, insisting on renting a place yourself. What on earth are you thinking?"
"..." Su Yue fell silent after hearing her mother’s words.
After a dozen or so seconds, she said to her mother, "Mom, I just don’t want to rely on you and Dad for everything... Please stop nagging me about this stuff. It’s giving me a massive headache."
Seeing her daughter’s brow furrowed, Zheng Qiuyi shook her head helplessly and said, "Alright, alright, I’ll stop nagging... Then tell me about that young man, Lin Li, the one who brought the big bag of vegetables!
He seems nice. A very down-to-earth young man. What does he do for a living? Is he a colleague from your school?"
’Mom, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Lin Li is just a total slacker with no ambition...’ Su Yue grumbled inwardly.
