To be honest, she had no idea how to react.

This wasn't the first time someone had looked at her like that, like she was the center of their world.

It wasn't even the first time someone had wanted something more, only to be met with her usual cold indifference.

That was the common complaint from her past lovers. Verena was too distant, too restrained. Intimate only when necessary, like it was a chore rather than desire.

In a society where love was measured in touch, devotion, and undivided attention, she had always felt like an outsider. Passion, for her, had never burned the way it did for others.

She didn't crave closeness. She didn't need it. She didn't understand it.

And yet, they always mistook her detachment for a lack of love.

But she had loved them. Truly. Deeply. Just... not in the way they wanted.

"There you go with that look again..." Evelyn murmured, her voice laced with something between fondness and frustration. "I know that look. The one you give when someone tries to be intimate to you."

"And what look is that?"

"Like you're experienced, but not."

"Do you think I'm cold?"

"No... it's just you, Lady Verena. And I love it."

The words settled between them, soft but certain.

Evelyn, the girl who had spent her life being valued only by how much she could give, was now the one giving something freely. Acceptance.

It wasn't just Verena trying to reach out to her. Evelyn had reached back.

"It makes me want to keep you all to myself," she whispered, voice barely audible. "To take care of you."

She leaned in, her lips hovering just inches away, searching for any sign of hesitation. But there was none. No flinch. No retreat.

Encouraged, she closed the distance.

Soft. Cloudy. Warm.

Their lips met in a gentle, fleeting kiss.

When Evelyn pulled away, Verena remained as unreadable as ever.

Neither flustered nor overwhelmed. Just watching. Considering.

"Did that make you feel better?" Verena asked, tone almost clinical.

Evelyn huffed a small laugh. "Yes. But I want more."

"Well, you'd have to work harder for those."

Evelyn took her time.

She carefully adjusted Verena's pillows, making sure they were just right, before gently tucking the blankets around her.

"You don't have to do all that."

"Yes, but I want to."

She wasn't used to being taken care of. She was always the one in control. Even when she was vulnerable, she made sure no one could really see it. But Evelyn wasn't fooled.

"Does your head still hurt?" Evelyn asked, brushing a few strands of hair away from Verena's face.

"It's tolerable."

First, she reached for the damp cloth resting in a bowl on the bedside table. With practiced gentleness, she wrung it out and pressed it against Verena's forehead.

Then, Evelyn reached for a cup of water on the nightstand.

"Sit up," she instructed, but when Verena groaned and barely made the effort, Evelyn sighed and leaned in closer.

With one hand behind Verena's head and the other tilting the cup, she carefully pressed the rim against her lips.

"Drink up, my love..."

"You're getting ahead there, aren't you?"

As much as Verena wanted to believe in Evelyn's love, she knew better.

People didn't change overnight, especially not someone like Evelyn.

In the novel, she had been a disaster, a textbook example of self-destruction wrapped in misplaced devotion.

There was never any character development. Just pure co-dependence and thrilling romance.
