Chapter 6 - If Fate Defies Me, I'll Defy Fate

Hours ago...

She wanted to sleep. But after everything that had happened, her brain refused to shut up.

So instead of resting like a normal person, she grabbed a notebook and started jotting things down.

As a former human resource manager, she knew the importance of taking notes. Afterall, the human memory was trash, unreliable and prone to forgetting crucial details.

"Let's see..." she muttered, tapping her pen against her chin.

Verena, in the original novel, had barely been present, just a jealous fiancée who suddenly stopped caring about Raphael until the grand finale because she was a regressor.

She had already seen this play out multiple times and knew exactly what to do.

Every regression started at different moments, such as Raphael breaking off their engagement. But the details were vague. The rest of Verena's life was a mystery.

Then there was the real problem... the actual plot.

The first half of the novel was literally just nonstop sexual harassment.

The male lead was a pushy, entitled creep who forced himself on the heroine every chance he got.

The second male lead was even worse despite his innocent looks. He was intrusive, possessive, and kidnapped her at one point.

Because, of course, it was a classic trope in female-oriented romances. Somehow, blatant harassment was supposed to be hot.

The worst part was that she remembered swooning over it and outright said to herself, "Damn, I'm so into that."

It was hilarious, considering she'd drop dead on the spot if anyone so much as breathed too close to her in real life.

Asexual struggles, I suppose...

As always, the heroine was complete doormat. No self-respect. Probably a masochist.

And now that same spineless heroine was her love target.

"To hell with this!" she slammed her fist against the table.

"Lady Verena!"

She barely had time to process the words before her bedroom door swung open.

The sun had already rose.

But standing there, framed by the morning light, was her maid.

And Orasia D'Auvergne.

The second princess and duchess dowager.

A woman who married Duke D'Auvergne, only to become a widow after an assassination attempt on her husband.

Not that it stopped her from wielding immense power, thanks to her ties to the Imperial Family, her wealth, and her status.

A woman as sharp as a blade, unnecessarily fierce in her rule, and completely indifferent to the suffering of others.

Family included.

"Leave us," her mother ordered.

The maid scurried away as Orasia stepped forward, her presence alone enough to suffocate the room.

Despite the streaks of white now threading through her hair, her gaze remained as piercing as ever. Unyielding. Merciless.

"You are useless now, a disgrace to our family," she said, voice as cold as polished steel. "The duke has humiliated you, and in doing so, our name. No man will take you now."

There it was, the classic Orasia who was pragmatic to the core. If she got transmigrated, she would be an asian mother.

Verena forced herself to keep her tone light. "Lady Or— I mean..." She cleared her throat, choosing her words carefully. "Mother..."

"Do not mother me," Orasia snapped. "You never even tried, not in academics, not in anything remotely useful. And now, thanks to you, our house teeters on the brink of ruin."

Verena barely resisted the urge to sigh. Yep. This was going to be one of those mornings.

"I apologize for being intrusive, Your Grace," the maid interjected, bowing her head. "But Lady Verena has decided to take the entrance exam for Irasios Academy..."

Huh? When did I?...

For a fleeting moment, the Dowager Duchess of D'Auvergne, a woman who wielded power with an iron grip, actually looked confused. Her sharp gaze faltered, just slightly.

"As much as I'd support that..." She turned to Verena, her expression unreadable. "My dear... you don't have a Natal Affinity."

Her voice wavered, not from sorrow, but it must have sounded that way to the others. "Right... I have no Natal Affinity..."

There were two things that made this book series infamous: the absurd amount of romance and smut and its ridiculously intricate magic system based on the Zodiacs.

The Natal Affinity was everything. It was magic, talent, and fate all woven into the Zodiac Weave, a cosmic force that dictated an individual's power and potential.

And Verena... didn't have one. She'd almost forgotten about that.

It was unheard before. Therefore, it was interpreted as a bad omen.

"I know this must have shattered you ever since we found out," Orasia said, her voice softer than before. "And perhaps that's why you've been acting so differently, my child. But please, don't be stubborn. Just find a man. There's nothing else to be done. It's not like you can become a researcher either, you were never particularly gifted in academics."

"I can."

"What?"

If fate was going to deny her, then she was going to deny fate right back.

Besides... she knew the world building of this novel inside and out.

"I definitely can," she smirked.

Now, that brings us to the present...

"So this is what she meant by 'the academy,' huh?" Verena let out a long, suffering sigh. It was honestly insulting to be thrown back into school.

She had already graduated once, thank you very much.

Besides, she had no memory of deciding to enroll here. It wasn't even dictated in the novel!

The moment she stepped through the gates, whispers erupted around her like wildfire.

"Lady Verena is here?..."

"But she doesn't even have—"

So that was going to be a thing, huh?

It was downright infuriating, really, especially since she wasn't even the real Verena. But whatever. She ignored the staring, took a deep breath, and walked.

The academy was, admittedly, stunning. All grandiose marble courtyards, neatly trimmed hedges, and enchanted lanterns that glowed even in daylight.

Gothic-style spires stretched toward the heavens, their stained-glass windows scattering colored light onto cobblestone pathways.

She entered the atrium, already packed with students waiting for the commencement ceremony.

"It's so suffocating..." she muttered under her breath, quickly maneuvering through the crowd and into the hallways for a breather.

"Y-Your Grace! Where are you touching me?! Not there!"

"Be a good girl, will you?"

She turned the corner, and there he was, Raphael, pressing Evelyn against the wall.

Ah.

The early sexual harassment scene.
