Chapter 87: Chapter 87: Unmeasured Strength

The combat class began like usual.

Mr. Callor stood in front of the gathered students, his voice loud and steady. "Now, you’ve all sparred with one another. You’ve tasted each other’s strength. By now, you should know who among you stands at the top."

Several students exchanged glances. More than a few eyes drifted toward Rhian and Nia.

Rhian didn’t shift under the attention. He was used to it now.

He had noticed something strange over the past weeks, especially during class training. Ash.

For someone who had displayed so much power during the portal expedition, the guy barely showed anything during combat sessions.

He always claimed to be a Mystical, and his go-to power in class was his shapeshifting.

But Rhian had seen more than that in the portal. His strength, speed, and reaction time were unnatural, far beyond any regular Mystical.

Rhian had been in enough fights by now to know the difference.

Ash wasn’t just Mystical. He was definitely a Hybrid. Probably a strong one.

And yet... he never showed it.

That made Rhian uneasy, not because he felt threatened, but because he realized something important.

He had no idea how strong Ash really was.

He had always felt a bit uneasy whenever people pointed to him and Nia as the strongest in class.

Not because he lacked confidence, but because Ash was holding back, and no one seemed to realize it.

Mr. Callor continued, his voice steady as he paced the room. "If you plan to join the tournament, you won’t just be fighting the people you’re used to. You’ll be up against students from other classes. Ones whose abilities you’ve never seen. Students who haven’t revealed what they can do at full strength."

He paused to let the message settle.

"That’s where most of you will fall short. Not in strength, but in decision-making. You’ll hesitate. You’ll guess wrong. And you’ll lose."

A few students sat straighter at that.

"So today, we mix it up. You’re not fighting your regular partners. You need to adapt." Mr. Callor’s eyes swept the room. "Figure it out. Fast."

Rhian glanced at Nia beside him. She gave a small shrug, already rolling her shoulders in anticipation.

This was going to be interesting.

Mr. Callor paced slowly, his eyes scanning the students as he organized matchups.

He paired off those who had always avoided one another, forced others who had grown too comfortable to separate. No one was spared from the shuffle.

Eventually, he stopped in front of Rhian and Nia.

The two strongest students in his class, and arguably the most familiar with each other’s style.

They had fought enough times that their sparring was more routine than test.

But that was the problem.

Callor folded his arms, debating.

Putting them against the rest wouldn’t be fair. Neither of them would get anything useful out of a one-sided match, and it would only discourage the others.

He didn’t want to waste time. This wasn’t about stroking egos, it was about making sure they all grew. Even the strongest.

Just because Rhian and Nia dominated their class didn’t mean much in the grand scheme. The portal expedition had made that clear. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Not a single one of his students had made it into the top three teams. Talent was one thing. Reality was another.

He sighed, making a mental note.

If today’s sparring didn’t challenge them enough, he would need to pull something else out later, maybe let them face upper-year students.

Because strength in a small pond meant nothing when the ocean was waiting.

The crowd of students formed a rough circle on the training floor, clearing space at the center as Mr. Callor barked, "First match! Eran and Daila, step in!"

The short boy with white hair rolled his shoulders as he stepped forward, his expression unreadable.

Across from him, a lean girl with sharp black hair cracked her neck and took her stance without a word.

"Begin!" Callor called.

Daila moved first, snapping her fingers as a gust of wind shot her upward.

She floated just slightly off the ground, balancing herself in the air with steady waves of wind under her feet.

Eran didn’t flinch. He exhaled slowly, then dropped his hand to the ground.

A sudden burst of frost spread out around his feet, slicking the floor with a thin coat of ice.

Daila narrowed her eyes and adjusted, flicking her wrist to create a sharp air blade that cut toward him.

He raised his arm. A jagged ice shield erupted from the ground, deflecting the blade in a clean arc.

Daila didn’t let up. She rotated midair, pushing both hands out to her sides.

A swirling burst of wind compressed in her palms, then shot forward as twin vortexes, spiraling fast toward Eran.

He dropped to a knee, slamming both hands onto the ice.

In an instant, multiple spikes of frost erupted in front of him like jagged spears, creating a partial barrier.

The wind vortexes slammed into the spikes, breaking through a few but losing momentum.

Then he launched his counter.

Eran raised both hands, and two thick lances of ice formed in the air. With a sharp thrust of his arms, he sent them flying toward her, fast and direct.

Daila leaned into her wind again, blasting herself sideways to avoid them, then used the wind under her feet to swoop in low.

She landed a hard kick to Eran’s side, but he rolled with it and slid back along the ice, regaining distance.

"Time!" Mr. Callor called.

Both fighters dropped their stances. The spar hadn’t ended in a clear winner, but the exchange had been sharp, tight control. A solid showing for both.

"Good," Callor nodded. "Next pair!"

The next two stepped into the circle without hesitation. One was a tall boy with broad shoulders and a confident smirk.

The other, a quiet girl with a short buzz cut and narrowed eyes, kept her arms loose at her sides.

Mr. Callor gave a nod. "Begin."

The boy moved first, his stance low and aggressive. As he charged, faint cracks of orange sparks trailed along his arms, his body heating up as he activated his ability. Fire Mystical.
