I Was Just a Cleaner... Until I Got the Demon Extraction System-Chapter 76: Getting a Team Member
Damian kept looking at them, trying to figure out what they were whispering about. At some point, he realized something. He saw that the girl looked at him for a brief moment, right into his eyes.
"Can she see me?" he thought.
That was the only explanation for her behavior. Damian, after realizing this, took a closer look at everything she had done.
He started walking too, not staying in the same place. That way, she would have to whisper back to Mathias if he did something weird. Mathias couldn't see in the dark after all.
Damian decided to take out the ritual dagger and show it to them. He had it in his hands, as if he was about to go and attack them with it.
The girl had stopped whispering to Mathias, but when she saw that, she whispered again.
"Yeah, she's definitely seeing me," Damian thought.
But that didn't change his mission. He wanted to make Mathias enter one of the ritual rooms with him, so that the two could work together again. At that moment, the two were basically on opposite teams.
The last thing Damian wanted was to go against Mathias and make him fail the test because of it. Damian felt like he was someone way stronger than everyone else, so he felt bad when taking the chance from someone else, especially someone he knew.
However, approaching them wasn't an easy thing to do. If he just walked over and talked to them, well, that wouldn't work. Damian wanted to speak with Mathias in private, and then, he might have been able to share his identity with him.
"The first thing I need to do is split them up..."
And what was the best way to split them up? Well, scare them. Damian decided to use his power to make them split.
So, instead of just watching them from far away, he decided to make his move. He didn't want to use any of his water skills, as that might reveal his true identity.
He used his powerful body and the cover of darkness to launch an attack on them. When he started moving, this time, the woman didn't whisper; she said aloud.
"It's coming!" she said.
It made them scared, especially Mathias and the other girl who couldn't see in the dark. They had no idea what was coming for them. The unknown made it all much scarier.
Damian decided to attack Mathias. Not to hurt him badly, just to get him knocked out, similar to what he did with that man in the initial room.
That way, he could take Mathias somewhere private and share with him what was going on. He dashed and appeared in front of Mathias in a matter of seconds.
When Mathias saw Damian, dressed up like that, he retreated a few steps and fell to the ground on his butt.
"H-Help!" he yelled.
The girls tried to help him, but everything happened really fast. Damian hit him in the gut. It was strong enough to paralyze Mathias. He couldn't move after the hard blow to the gut.
Then, he grabbed Mathias, put him on his shoulder, and ran back into the darkness. All of it took only a few seconds, leaving both girls stunned.
"What the fuck?" the girl with the night vision said, "Why did he choose him?"
They couldn't understand why Damian chose Mathias over them. But there was nothing they could do about it. Damian grabbed Mathias and ran away so fast that they didn't see him anymore.
Damian found a room to enter, somewhere that no one else would enter, or at least he expected it to be that way. Then, he tossed Mathias on the ground.
Mathias was still awake, but he didn't know what the hell was going on. The fear inside him was so great that it made him unable to think clearly.
"Don't kill me, please," Mathias begged.
He was not thinking right, though. They were taking the hunter test, and the examiners did their best to ensure the participants didn't die while taking the test. So, if Mathias could at least clear his mind, he would know that he wouldn't die.
The chance of dying only happened when facing the demons during the test, but Damian was clearly not a demon.
"Calm down," Damian said, "we are just going to talk, alright?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Mathias didn't say a word. He had both hands on his head. "Please, I beg you, don't kill me."
Damian laughed at that, "Can't you hear my voice? Isn't it familiar?"
It was only then that Mathias paid attention and realized what the hell was going on.
"Wait a second, Damian?"
The fear Mathias felt vanished from his body. He felt much safer now that he was with someone he knew, although Damian still had the ugly mask and attire.
"Yes, that's me. I won't take off my mask because I can't do it, you know, there are cameras watching our moves, but they can't listen to the things we are saying, at least I think so..."
Damian then explained everything to Mathias. He shared how he didn't sleep like the rest of them, using the excuse that he didn't eat a lot of the soup, and that his strong body helped him too.
Then, he shared that when he woke up and attacked the other man, hoping to be the first one. He also said how it was hard for him to leave alone through that hole. Mathias, who was sad before thinking that Damian didn't help him, now understood things.
"You're impressive to leave on your own through that hole; we almost didn't do it with all of us working together..."
Damian shared the most important thing, and that was how the test would work after he found the ritual room. That was the part he asked Mathias to pay close attention to.
"Basically, now I need to get someone and lock them up inside the ritual room, and this person will basically fail the test... And then, presumably after four different people are taken by the chasers, they will release demons for us to fight against."
Mathias listened to it very carefully, and he realized that his best chance of passing the test was to work with Damian and become one of the chasers.
"So we need to find one of the remaining three ritual rooms before someone else does," Mathias said, "or else I can't be on your side."
That was the problem they now had to face. Damian and Mathias had to work together to find one of the other three ritual rooms — that's considering there were still three rooms, as someone else might have found them.
"We need to move," Damian said, "I think I know what the door to the ritual room looks like, so that gives us some advantage. Come on."
They left the room. While that was happening, the examiners were watching everything from the cameras, and they were shocked to see it.
"How did he move so fast? And are they working together now for some reason, or is he going to lock that man in the ritual room he found earlier?"
"No idea. This is going much differently than I expected."
The main examiner kept looking at the cameras, staring at Damian. He didn't say a word, but his mind was clearly thoughtful.
Anyway, Damian and Mathias walked through the corridors, looking for the ritual room. Damian could easily walk as he could see in the dark, but Mathias had a much harder time.
They didn't want to use any lights as that could draw attention, so Damian was the one leading the way while Mathias just followed behind him.
"It's so weird to walk in the darkness without knowing where I am going," Mathias said, "how can you see in the dark? I mean, the girl in my team could see it too, but I didn't know you could."
"Well, I have some skills, but don't tell this to anyone."
"I won't..."
After exploring the corridors for almost half an hour — and finding a few other groups on the way — they finally found a door that had the same symbol Damian had seen the other time.
"I think this might be the door we are looking for," he said, "go inside. I'll wait outside."
This ritual room worked strangely. After someone entered for the first time, only that person could enter again. It was locked with magic.
So, Damian couldn't enter it. He had to allow Mathias to enter and retrieve his attire, and then they could proceed to the next part of their plan.
Mathias left after a while; this time, he was wearing a fur attire similar to Damian's, but his head mask was that of a boar, not a deer.
"So how do I look?" Mathias asked.
"Weird," Damian said, "let's move. We need to find two people to lock in the ritual rooms. Remember the way back."
"Understood."
