Chapter 244: Time to Go

Felix had no choice but to place Leif’s sword on top of Irene and lift her in his arms yet again. His only objective was to get her back to the infirmary.

Anger seared through his head and heart.

Who on earth allowed her to leave the infirmary in the first place? It wasn’t as if the mages had any reason to fight. They only ever used their shields when they were directly threatened.

His anger for them grew, but it wasn’t the same as the prejudice the southerners had against the magic practitioners. At least he could always say that much.

Felix kicked the flap of the infirmary tent open and rushed into the room.

"Stanley! I need your healing now!" he ordered. "There isn’t time to waste."

Felix sat her anywhere that he could.

A table was going to have to be good enough because the beds were farther away.

Stanley didn’t resist the urgent tone and rushed towards the table where Felix and Irene were. His hands were already raised as they warmed up with healing magic.

"Get his shirt away," Stanley stated.

Felix’s already blood-covered hands reached out, but they trembled as he hesitated.

"Now!" Stanley demanded.

The oldest apprentice could only do what he was asked, and he revealed the girl’s pale skin to everyone looking on. More than that, the injury was in the middle of her chest, so she was indecently exposed.

However, the blood was alarming enough that even Stanley didn’t react with more than helpfulness. He had to squeeze the scar shut as his magic started repairing the deepest fibers inside of her skin and worked its way outward.

It was such a deep and intense cut that the mage had to stop before it was entirely healed. It was still a gash, but it was no longer bleeding. The outer layers of her skin would have to heal themselves, but it was enough that it likely saved her life.

Stanley’s blood-covered hands lay flatly against the tabletop Irene lay on top of, and his head hung as he caught his breath. Using such mana was so taxing on someone of his age.

"Cover her up," Stanley muttered. "This is no place for a girl. Put her in one of the beds."

Her clothing was torn, but Felix still tried to cover her up as best as he could. He attempted to lift her up, but it was then that he realized the way her leg was hanging.

Since she wasn’t wearing boots, it wasn’t difficult to lift up her pant legs and see that her ankle had been broken badly. It was already bruising.

"Her leg is broken!" Felix shouted.

"Maximus!" Stanley shouted. "You may not have healing, but at least splint her leg."

The part-mage knight rushed forward and did as he was asked.

Only once her leg was stabilized could Felix finally take her back to the bed where she was supposed to be in the first place.

He wanted to be angry at Irene, but he knew that he should have had someone watching her. It was merely that everyone was already spread so thin, including himself. He didn’t think about it, considering all of the other duties he had been attending to.

He felt regret. ƒreewebɳovel.com

In his sorrow, before he could completely cover her in blankets, he went for one of the basins and filled it with warm water. He cleaned her dirty and shredded feet as best as he could. He even went higher until he was met with the complicated sight of an unconscious girl baring herself for the world to see.

He felt angry, but understanding soon took its place. He wiped blood from her body and took the shirt off his own back for her to wear, so at least she would be covered when she finally regained consciousness once again.

Finally, he was able to put the blankets over her and hope that she warmed up.

However, his feet wouldn’t move. He stared down at her with his eyebrows lowered. Complicated thoughts collided in his head.

Iro was a girl. She always had been just that.

He was a jealous prick who accused her of trying to steal Agnes away from him.

He felt sick at his own lack of understanding. But now... he understood.

As his blue eyes brushed over Irene from head to toe, guilt ate at him. What he noticed the most, however, was how pale her face was. It was even paler than usual.

He had to go.

As he passed the desk where Stanley sat, seemingly a bit out of sorts as he regained his strength from using such mana, Felix said, "She needs something for her blood loss when she wakes up."

His feet took him out of the tent, and he stalked back to the battlefield where cleanup was already taking place. Rather than participating in his usual duties, he found Sir Gunnar quickly, and he gestured for the man to follow him until he was away from others.

"Iro almost died," Felix managed to explain. "He rushed out of the infirmary and started taking things into his own hands—" The apprentice put a hand over his mouth as his words became far too impassioned. "Or should I say her?" he weakly uttered.

"You found out?" Gunnar snapped.

"Almost stabbed to death in her chest," Felix explained. "Of course I found out."

Gunnar began to rush towards the infirmary, which was, no doubt, where Irene lay.

However, Felix stopped the knight before he could continue by placing a gloved hand on his shoulder.

"You were right," Felix said. "We need to get her out of here. She’s going to get herself killed if she doesn’t die because of the mistake she made today." Felix wasn’t finished, and his voice broke. "Get in contact with Iro’s father. She deserves to get out of here. He will want his daughter out of this place with all of these people. She must get out of here."

Felix’s face was twisted into a pained expression. Gunnar could only place a hand on the apprentice’s shoulder.

It was time to get her out of there. She had done more than enough for all of them.
