Inside Lillian’s empty living room, furniture was tossed over, and her carpet was turned.

Suddenly, a duo, a man and a woman, wandered into the room.

They were dressed in black formal wear in the form of suits, scanning the surroundings with their eyes.

The middle-aged man narrowed his eyes before turning towards his colleague, "I know it’s obvious something happened here, but are you sure there were signs of a gate here? We have already looked over this dorm room from top to bottom and bottom to top several times in the past 6 days."

The young woman nodded briefly. She had a black bob cut and wore a pair of sunglasses over her eyes.

"We were told there was by the Observance Department. Unless you doubt their skills."

The man frantically shook his head with his hands raised and a crooked smile on his lips.

"No, no... it’s just that every gate leaves behind a lingering trace even after it has disappeared. Although this room would most certainly need to be cleansed from the energy, we have no idea where the portal had appeared from or how."

The woman held her chin in a thoughtful manner.

The man stared at her sunglasses with a twitching eye.

"Was there any need to bring those?"

"Hm? Got a problem with them, "Dick" rick?"

"You know it’s Derrick, jackass!" he yelled before rubbing the back of his head. He thought for a moment before sighing, "Never min—"

The hairs on the back of his neck stood tall, like towering peaks on his smooth but scarred skin.

He turned his head back around before widening his eyes.

A swirling portal of deep green colour appeared, vomiting out two humanoid beings stacked on top of each other and left—

THUD!

... Leaving behind a groaning man on the ground, crushed under the combined weight of two beautiful women.

Lillian clutched the side of her head with her right hand—not having suspected the journey out to be so hazardously dizzy.

’The game definitely doesn’t put enough detail into that...’

She then stared down and stroked her hand over a familiar black cardigan, which she found to belong to Marionette.

Lillian drifted her eyes up, staring into Marionette’s lovely pair of red eyes that were focused on her moving hand.

She grinned.

"Hey~"

"... Hello..."

Marionette seemed to have calmed down a bit, putting back on her mask of stoicism.

Lillian pouted at her unenergetic response to their meeting. Just as she was about to open her mouth, her ears twitched at the sounds of a gruff man’s groans beneath their bodies.

Both of them drew their eyes to the man on the ground who had neatly trimmed stubble, messy brown hair long enough to be tied into a ponytail, and brown eyes filled with irritation.

"You could’ve dodged that, Derrick."

Lillian then drew her eyes towards a young, beautiful woman with the bob cut, who craned her head down towards her partner with a mocking and also detestable smirk.

Lillian then felt herself lifted off of the man.

Marionette held Lillian up, holding the spot under her armpits like she was holding up an adorable kitten by its arms.

The man gave one last deep groan and finally sat up, patting his stomach before staring up at his partner.

"You make it sound like I was intentionally trying to get crushed under two people."

"Were you not? Are you perhaps not interested in two beautiful ladies who are younger than you by a decade?"

The lady gestured towards Lillian and Marionette, who still remained in direct contact as they watched the spectacle unfold.

The gruff man’s eyes twitched in annoyance at the blatant woman’s accusations—already having been through it several times.

"These days, I feel like you’re trying to either get me fired or to just get under my skin, Lense."

The bob-cut woman shrugged.

"Not my problem. You can’t handle banter."

"That crap ain’t banter, and you kn—"

Cough. Cough.

The two childish adults twisted their heads towards Lillian, who coughed in her fist, attracting their attention.

"Are you two here because of the Gate that appeared here?"

The duo glanced back at each other before staring back.

The gruff man finally pulled himself off the floor, brushing himself down of dust before responding, "We’re from the Engaging Department of this organisation, which you obviously know is the academy, and if you didn’t, then that’s kind of your fault an—"

"You’re rambling again." The woman interrupted, causing his eyes to widen briefly in realisation.

He coughed into his fist and then got onto the main topic.

"Anyway, we’re here due to a detection of energy signatures possibly relating to a Tier 3 Gate. And seeing that you two have managed to escape... I suppose you two have either managed to find a way out or were able to defeat a C-rank monster."

The man clapped, "This will definitely be added as one of your achievements in your portfolios."

The woman then elbowed his side, "You’re not meant to reveal that yet."

The man winced, clutching his side with an apologetic look, "Ah—right... forgot about that..."

The woman facepalmed.

"How do you forget that? It was included in your contract as well."

"I don’t read over my contract like you do before bed, Lense." He enunciated her name, dragging it on slightly. "Plus, that thing is ridiculously long."

Although Derrick couldn’t see it, he knew his partner was rolling her eyes behind her shades.

He rolled his eyes back like a child before turning towards the two students.

He then squinted, stroking his hairy chin before lighting up like a light bulb.

Lense felt her partner tug at her arm and leaned close to her ear.

Marionette stared at the whispering pair, forgetting about her hands placed under Lillian’s armpits. That was until she noticed a gaze from below.

Lillian stared up with a smirk, "So~... you going to unhand me?" she snickered, leaning back into her into her.

"Or do you perhaps want another kiss to convi—"

Lillian then felt Marionette’s hold on her vanish—her body leaning back before eventually falling and hitting the ground with a soft thud.

Marionette stared at her from the side, huffing and turning her face away with her arms crossed.

She then unconsciously caressed the smooth surface of her lips, briefly reminded again of what happened before giving a subtle shake of her head to remove it.

Lillian gave a low groan, kneading her knuckles into her lower back before pushing herself off the ground.

She looked towards Marionette to find her avoiding her gaze before staring back at the black-suited duo and finding them scrolling through a tablet screen.

They glanced up from time to time from the screen and back at them before eventually speaking.

"You two are the first and second place holders for the recent Entrance Exam, right? Congratulations. That too will be a—"

Derrick snapped his gaze back at his partner to find her sighing and quietly muttering, "They already know..."

He coughed before continuing, "T-that too will be added to your portfolio. What a coincidence to find you two in the same room, though. Especially when one of them is a Ros—"

His partner slapped him over the head, shutting him up. She then turned towards the two and spoke in his stead:

"Anyway, since you, too, look close, could you two kindly live in the same room for a while? Until we remove all the lingering energy in this place. And I’m sure you know the harms of living with it would be quite painful."

Lillian tapped her chin with a pondering look before opening her mouth—only for Marionette to answer for her.

"The skin would develop deformities, and the heart would begin having trouble supporting the body."

The shades-wearing woman nodded, "Correct. While it may take a while for such effects to occur, it is better to be safe than sorry if it is discovered either of you are more vulnerable to its effects."

She then pulled up her tablet again.

"This room seems to belong to Miss Arius here, correct? Could she possibly stay with you for a while, Miss Roselle?"

Marionette stared at the woman—her eyes narrowing as though she could see past the dark shades.

"What may happen to her if I were to refuse?"

Lillian froze before tilting her head down a bit with a saddened expression.

Lense raised an eyebrow, "Then we could find someone who would be willing. Do you perhaps have anyone in mind who is attending this academy, Miss Arius?"

"Huh? Yeah. They’re called Mill—"

Before Lillian could finish her response, Marionette chimed in, "I didn’t say that she wasn’t going to stay with me. I was merely asking what would happen. That was all."

She said with her eyes closed for a bit before opening them and staring at Lillian’s shining eyes.

She then watched as Lillian widened her arms out towards her, suggesting she... come in for a hug...?

Marionette stared strangely at Lillian, which discouraged her and caused her to bring her arms back to her sides.
