Chapter 94: Stakeout

Although he had lost the man this time, there was no way Felix would just let it go.

How could he? The Beta was a potential threat. It might have been only one time that he tried to follow Felix at night, and it’s been a few months since there... But he clearly recognized Felix when their eyes met. Even though Felix was also in his wolf form that night when they had met. If it were just a coincidence, that the Beta noticed an Omega wandering around at night at followed him because he was hoping to mate or whatever, then would he still remember Felix?

It seemed... unlikely.

Of course, it could be that he remembered Felix to make sure to stay away from him. Back then, Kade also had appeared, and he was the one who chased the Beta away. Only by intimidating the Beta with his presence, nothing more happened. Well, maybe he did find the Beta again later, but...

Judging by the fact that the man was still in one piece - his ear had already been ragged when they first met, and the scars on his forearms looked old as well - it seemed unlikely. Thinking about how Kade returned reeking of blood after confronting that rogue Alpha that had once attacked Felix... Sure, the Beta’s offense was much less serious - he had only followed the Omega, but hadn’t attempted anything (whether it was because he hadn’t had such intentions, or because Kade had arrived before he could do anything, it was unclear) - but still.

It was just not quite adding up.

Back then, Felix was weak, and feeling unwell everyday, so it slipped off his mind after some time. He had way too many things on his mind to worry about one accidental encounter for too long, when nothing more happened. But now...

Now he was feeling good. His situation with Kade... had been temporarily resolved. He still needed to be cautious, with his little pup to care for, but because of that, it was even more important to resolve any potential threats in a bud. So, since he has been reminded of that incident and bumped into the Beta again, Felix just had to investigate.

Naturally, he couldn’t quite do it with Vivi around. He couldn’t have her by his side when he confronted the man - there was a risk she might get hurt, if things went south. Felix was confident about his ability to defend himself in a one-on-one fight, the way he was now, at his full strength, especially against a Beta, who couldn’t use any pheromones against him, but to protect his pup on top of that... Although not impossible, it would simply be insensible to put himself and Vivi in such a situation.

So, he asked Brielle for help, having her watch over Vivi when she wasn’t at work.

Unlike when he had searched for the mermaid, Felix’s hunt for the Beta was done during the day, in his human form. Thinking about his appearance during their little run-in at the restaurant, the man probably either lived, or currently worked near the town’s square. So, Felix dropped Vivi at Brielle’s place in the morning, put sunglasses and the baseball cap on, and trying to look as inconspicuous as possible, sat down somewhere he had a decent view of the whole square. Then, he pulled out a newspaper, covering himself up even further...

And then he waited. And observed.

It was on the fourth spying attempt that he finally got to see the Beta again. The weather was rather gloomy that day, with the overcast skies, and Felix had to give up on his baseball cap and sunglasses disguise. Still, hiding under newspaper, he managed to go unnoticed.

The Beta didn’t seem to be cautious at all. He just pranced onto the square, then went to one of the restaurants, sat by the empty table, and ordered a meal for himself, just like any other person grabbing some lunch after work or on their break would do. He didn’t expect that anyone might be trying to hunt for him, it seemed... Well, it was understandable, in a way. Not every Omega would have the guts to look for someone who had followed them, especially someone bigger than them...

But Felix would rather take a little risk, than live constantly worrying about when and where the Beta might appear again, and what his intention possibly might have been.

So, he waited until the Beta was served his meal, and then finished his tea and got up, walking out of the cafe he was in. He moved slowly, in a calm manner, so as not to attract any attention. He approached the Beta from behind, going unnoticed...

And took a seat right by his table, opposite him.

"What is..." the man lifted his gaze from his food, stopping in the middle of the sentence when he recognized Felix. His eyes widened, and he was silent for a good minute or two...

Before he schooled his expression, and asked politely, "How can I help you?" freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"I have a few questions, if that’s alright," Felix scrutinized the man’s face carefully, resting his elbows on the table as he leaned slightly forward.

"We-well, I’m sorry, but I don’t have time right-"

"Why did you follow me?"

The man’s shoulders flinched, but he still tried to play dumb. "Follow you? I’m sorry, Sir, but I have no idea what you are talking about!"

"Somewhere between late February and early March... The beginning of March, if I remember correctly. Late at night, somewhere around Glass Avenue. You were in your wolf form..."

"I’m sorry, Sir, but you must be confusing me with someone else!"

Felix couldn’t help but scoff, his eyes narrowing. "Your torn ear is fairly memorable, and rather unique."

"I really don’t know what you are talking about!" the Beta insisted. He quickly stuffed his food in his mouth, swallowing without even chewing, and quickly stood up. "I’m sorry, Sir, but I have to go now. I’m in a hurry!"

Having said that, he tossed a banknote on the table, and practically ran out of the restaurant.

Frustrated as Felix was, he didn’t chase after him. What was he supposed to do, beat him up until he admitted the truth?

No. Felix had a much better idea in mind...
