Chapter 99: Stalker on Request

"I... I! I was p-paid for t-that!"

"...What?" Felix couldn’t help but pause. It wasn’t quite the answer he had expected... But then again, that whole situation was rather odd. Rather than think too much about it, he just continued the questioning, "Paid by whom?"

"I-I don’t know..."

"You don’t know?"

"W-well, I don’t know who he is..."

"But you’ve met him, haven’t you? So just describe him to me."

"Uhh... A Beta werewolf... Around my height... Blond hair, and blue eyes, I think?" The Beta furrowed his brows, trying to recall any details. "Wearing a suit, with some sort of emblem on his tie?"

A short gasp escaped Felix’s throat, as his whole body tensed up. That description... It sounded awfully like one of the Bloodmoon Pack’s guards who used to be stationed in Silverfall! Sure, it wasn’t necessarily him, it could be some other blond werewolf, but... What sort of coincidence would that be?

Still, Felix had to confirm. "What emblem was that?"

"Uh... I don’t know..."

"You don’t recognize it?"

"No..."

Felix pressed his lips tightly. It seemed unlikely to him that a werewolf would not be able to recognize the emblem of one of the supremes... But then again, he grew up in a pack, so his perspective was different. If the Beta spent his whole life as a rogue, or perhaps was from a pack that kept its distance from the others, maybe it wouldn’t be so weird that he was ignorant?

He thought for a moment, and pulled out his phone, opening a notepad app. He switched the tool to handwriting, and using colored pens, he quickly sketched up the emblem, showing it to the Beta. "Did it look anything like this?"

"Uh..." The Beta stared at the screen, blankly. How was he supposed to recognize anything based on those incomprehensible doodles? "I’m... not sure. Maybe?" he eventually muttered, squinting his eyes as he tried to make sense of Felix’s so-called drawing. "Well, there was a red circle... I think... But what is that black thing supposed to be?"

"Ahem," Felix cleared his throat, taking his phone away, and quickly stuffing it back in his pocket. Maybe he wasn’t the best artist out there, so what? It wasn’t his fault that the Beta’s interpretation skills were so low that he couldn’t understand his simple sketch! Either way, the fact that the red circle was right pretty much confirmed his suspicions.

But just in case... "It would be nice if we could see the image. Like an illusion, for example..." he spoke, not to the Beta, but rather to the dark forest.

And the forest responded. Or, well, the witch hiding somewhere in the forest did. The purple smoke grew denser, forming a screen, and on top of it, an image appeared. An image of a howling wolf on top of a blood moon.

"Ah!" The Beta’s eyes widened at the sight. "That’s! That’s it!"

So now he could recognize it!

Felix didn’t even think to get offended, though, because his whole attention was on something else.

It was Kade’s guard, then. And if that was Kade’s guard, then the true mastermind behind it all must have been Kade. There was no way the guard would have dared to do anything without Kade’s explicit permission, at the very least, and it was unlikely they would even choose to do anything out of their own initiative, rather than just following an order...

Felix’s face darkened. So the Alpha had orchestrated the whole event? At this point, it was pretty obvious what had happened...

But, since he had already gone through all this trouble to interrogate the Beta, it was best to confirm everything while he was at it. "So. What was it that you were paid to do?"

"Uh..." The Beta shifted around again uncomfortably, wanting to flee in panic, but unable to even get up. "I-I can’t say, I really can’t!" he muttered, shaking his head, but far less confidently than earlier. The spell was getting into him, and he found it harder and harder to resist. Not that he didn’t try.

Unmoved by the Beta’s pitiful struggle, Felix continued, his voice calm, but cold. "Why can’t you tell? Was it part of the deal?"

The Beta nodded his head fervently. "Yes, yes. I will be killed otherwise!"

Well, of course. That was the Bloodmoon Pack for you. One of the reasons why Felix had been so defensive and evasive toward Kade from the start, was the pack’s reputation for eliminating anyone who had wronged them in a very bloody way...

It wasn’t just empty threats.

Not that it would stop Felix from digging deeper this time. "You won’t be killed, as long as you cooperate with me."

"...Really?"

"Yes," Felix nodded his head. Truth be told, he wasn’t confident, but that didn’t matter right now. "So, just tell me everything."

The Beta hesitated for a while longer. However, with the purple smoke swirling around him, enveloping him tightly and entering his system with each breath, he couldn’t resist for long, no matter how much he wanted to.

"I was supposed to follow you," he finally answered. "Quietly at first, but then show up once you notice my presence..."

"Okay, and then?"

"Nothing more," the Beta shook his head. "Just, stick to you for a while, approach you, but without any fighting... And then get chased away once a black Alpha shows up."

"Hah!" Felix scoffed. What a nice little scheme!

"A-and after that, I was s-supposed to never approach y-you again... And make sure you never find out..." the Beta added, his voice growing weaker with each word, until it became almost inaudible. He looked up at Felix reluctantly, resembling more a startled, innocent deer than a wolf...

But Felix wasn’t even paying any attention to him anymore. All of his thoughts were revolving around Kade...

And those weren’t any good thoughts this time.

Eventually, after a good few minutes or so, he managed to calm down enough to ask, "What’s your name?"

"B-brian..."

"Okay, Brian. Thank you for your time today," he nodded his head, and stormed out, leaving the weakened Beta in the middle of the forest. He would be fine once the witch’s spell was withdrawn, so there was no need for Felix to care.
