Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Her Dark History

Zoe Lynch walked shakily toward Cecilia Nathan, her knees giving out as she nearly collapsed to the floor.

But remembering the room was full of Nathan Family shareholders, she grit her teeth and forced herself to control her trembling.

"Miss Selina Nathan, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were Selina Nathan. I was blind." Zoe Lynch said through clenched teeth. When she saw Cecilia remain unmoved, a chill went through her.

"Ms. Lynch, I seem to recall telling you who I was, didn’t I?" Cecilia raised an eyebrow, unfazed.

Zoe Lynch nodded. "Yes, you did."

"But you didn’t believe me. You even called me an impostor." Cecilia scoffed, her tone light. "Then again, you weren’t the only one. Dominic and Mona Nathan didn’t believe me either. It’s fine. You can all say I’m an impostor, but you can’t humiliate someone like that."

Linden Nathan turned to Zoe Lynch, his face dark. "What were my instructions to you just now, and what did you do? You don’t have the sense to work for the Nathan Family. Go to HR and get your final paycheck. Zoe Lynch, you’re fired."

"No, President Nathan! I fought my way up to get here! Even if I haven’t made huge contributions, I’ve put in the hard work! You can’t do this to me, President Nathan..." Zoe Lynch’s usually composed demeanor shattered. She rushed toward Linden Nathan in a panic, pleading desperately.

The branch’s general manager quickly grabbed her. "Zoe Lynch, calm down."

These were all core members of the board of directors. If she made a scene here, she would probably never find work in all of Veridia again.

Zoe Lynch clearly understood the gravity of the situation. She walked over to Cecilia, sobbing. "I’m sorry, Miss Nathan. Please, help me. I was blind, I was an idiot. I really didn’t know you were President Nathan’s daughter. I was wrong. Please, just give me one more chance. I’m over thirty, and everyone in my field already hates me. Where am I going to find a job now?"

"You know how hard it is to find a job these days. If I get fired, where can I go? Please, Miss Nathan, just give me one more chance."

Zoe Lynch grabbed Cecilia’s arm. Cecilia pulled her hand away and took a step back, her expression cold.

"Let’s go, Zoe Lynch. Stop making a fool of yourself!" The general manager couldn’t bear to watch any longer and growled at her.

Zoe Lynch stared numbly at Cecilia. Seeing her completely unmoved, she knew she had messed with the wrong person.

Cecilia wouldn’t forgive her, and Linden Nathan wouldn’t let her stay with the Nathan family business.

’This morning I was on top of the world, and by noon I’m fired. It feels like a dream.’

Zoe Lynch stared blankly at the floor. The general manager signaled the security guards standing outside, who then came over and escorted Zoe Lynch away.

After Zoe Lynch was gone, Mona Nathan realized everyone’s eyes were now on her.

"Cousin Cecilia, please forgive me. I was wrong too."

Mona Nathan was a different case. She was family, after all. But Cecilia had no intention of forgiving her just because they were related by blood.

At most, Mona had just run her mouth. She hadn’t actually done anything to her.

Zoe Lynch had poor character. Someone like that couldn’t be allowed to remain an employee of the Nathan Group.

Mona’s character wasn’t great either, but she wasn’t in a position to cause any real harm to the Nathan Family.

"Cecilia, come. Let me introduce you to these elders." Seeing that Cecilia didn’t want to deal with Mona, Linden Nathan smoothly changed the subject.

Mona Nathan awkwardly looked away, bit her lip, and finally walked over to Miles Sinclair. "Congratulations. Looks like you’ll be the Nathan family’s son-in-law after all."

"I wouldn’t have accepted losing to Cecilia Nathan, but losing to Selina Nathan... I have no choice but to concede."

She was just the daughter of one of Linden Nathan’s distant relatives. Of course she couldn’t compare to the daughter of the richest man in the country.

She had been so happy to see Miles Sinclair at first, but she’d never imagined that Cecilia Nathan was actually Selina Nathan.

’Thinking back on it, Serena Hughes had actually warned me.’

’It was I who didn’t dare to believe it, who refused to believe it.’

’After all, who would believe that a simp who’d been chasing Damian Hawthorne for so long was actually the daughter of the richest man in the country?’

"Miles Sinclair, did you know all along that Cecilia was Selina Nathan?" Mona’s eyes suddenly reddened. "When you were so protective of her, was it because you already knew she was Linden Nathan’s daughter?"

If that were the case, she could accept her loss.

She believed that aside from her family background being inferior to Cecilia’s, she wasn’t lacking in any other way.

"No." Miles Sinclair’s dark eyes, shimmering with a gentle wisdom that seemed to perceive all things beautiful, were fixed on her. "It’s because she’s my first love."

First love?!

Mona’s eyes widened in astonishment.

Cecilia Nathan was Miles Sinclair’s first love.

No wonder...

No wonder Miles Sinclair was so biased in her favor.

"Then... congratulations." Thinking of the millions she had spent as a fan of Miles Sinclair, Mona felt a sting in her nose.

She had already been heartbroken once before, when she learned that Miles Sinclair was the future son-in-law Linden Nathan was grooming.

But the bigger shock was yet to come—she never expected Linden Nathan was grooming him for *Cecilia*.

’So, Cecilia always had everything.’

"I was overthinking things. I’m sorry." Mona took a deep breath, wiped away a tear, and turned to Dominic Nathan. "Dad, I’m not feeling well. I’m going to head home."

"Alright." Dominic’s hands fidgeted, unsure of what to do with them. "Then I’ll go with you."

Everyone here was a board member. If he stayed, he’d just be a laughingstock.

As they went to leave, Linden Nathan didn’t try to stop them. After all, he’d already given his brother the scolding he deserved; he couldn’t very well treat him the same way he’d treated Zoe Lynch.

After they left, everyone had a renewed understanding of Cecilia’s importance.

But one of the board members still raised an objection.

"President Nathan, forgive me for saying so, but this daughter of yours... isn’t she the one who was involved in that scandal with Damian Hawthorne?" a sharp-eyed board member asked, having finally recognized Cecilia.

As soon as he spoke, all eyes in the conference room turned to Cecilia.

Her skin was fair, giving off a cool, noble air. Her large eyes, like brilliant jewels set in her face, sparkled with confidence and a unique aristocratic grace.

Everyone couldn’t help but recall one of the biggest gossip stories to come out of Korsyth.

The story was that a girl had threatened to jump off a building to be with Damian Hawthorne.

"President Nathan, your daughter couldn’t be that girl who threatened to kill herself to be with Damian Hawthorne, could she? I remember that girl’s name was also Cecilia Nathan."

The atmosphere in the room turned ice-cold.

That Cecilia Nathan... wasn’t she the very one standing here now?

"Yes," Linden Nathan confirmed without hesitation. "That Cecilia Nathan is my daughter, Selina Nathan."

"President Nathan, with all due respect, your daughter’s ’past’ is a bit... difficult to comment on. But with a history like that, if she’s to take over the Nathan Group in the future, I’m afraid the members of this board will not be able to agree." The speaker was the same man who had just started this line of questioning.

He was in his forties, wearing a gray suit and gray glasses, with regular features and a sharp gaze.

"Does anyone else disagree?" Linden Nathan didn’t respond to the man directly, instead asking the others in an indifferent tone.

"President Nathan, please don’t be offended. We’re just speaking frankly. We don’t mind a young woman taking your seat, but her reputation is just..."

"What’s wrong with her reputation? I don’t see a problem." The speaker was Miles Sinclair.

He stood up, hands in his pockets, his expression composed. His magnetic voice carried clearly throughout the conference room.

"Cecilia Nathan was another identity for Selina Nathan. She’s a grown woman now, and it’s perfectly normal for her to fall for a man. Hasn’t everyone here been young and in love before? At the very least, when she was pursuing love, she never used her status as a bargaining chip. And one more thing: she’s not a ’simp.’ She was simply pursuing someone she liked, which is perfectly reasonable."

"Who she chooses to like is her right."
