Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 190: Do You Know He Has Been in a Relationship Before?
If a project can’t get off the ground, it’s just talk.
"Mr. Gavin, let’s do as you say. If it’s really an acquaintance of mine who needs your help, I’ll come and tell you in person."
Gavin Sutton nodded. "Since you’ve said so, I can give him a proper answer."
"Oh, right. He also mentioned that Frances Bennett wants to invest in his project. You know her, so if you have a moment, you might want to give her a heads-up. The chances of this project getting off the ground are very slim. No matter how much money she sinks into it, it’ll be a loss. She shouldn’t get scammed."
Cecilia thought about Frances Bennett’s personality. ’She rarely gets involved in company business.’
’Why would she suddenly want to invest?’
’Cecilia knew this relative. Frances herself doesn’t think much of him, let alone like him, so this definitely isn’t about helping out family.’
’Does she actually believe in this project?’
Cecilia frowned and said nothing.
"Thank you, Mr. Gavin. I don’t really have any connection to Frances Bennett anymore. What she does is none of my business, but I still appreciate the heads-up."
Gavin Sutton, of course, knew about Frances Bennett’s attitude toward Cecilia.
"Frances Bennett is famously snobbish. It’s for the best that you don’t get too close to her family. Now that your identity is public, getting too close to them won’t do you any good."
"Thank you, Mr. Gavin."
...
When Frances Bennett learned her nephew had also sent a proposal to the Sutton Family, she flew into a panic and went straight to the Hawthorne Group.
The Hawthorne Group building towered into the clouds. Designed by a world-class architect, the structure was shaped like a Rubik’s Cube and was an iconic landmark in Korsyth.
As Damian Hawthorne’s mother, Frances Bennett was a familiar face to everyone at the Hawthorne Group.
This time, she took a contract and went straight to the finance department.
"President Bennett." The current head of the finance department had once worked under Frances Bennett and looked completely surprised to see her.
Ever since Damian Hawthorne’s eyesight recovered, he had been managing all the Hawthorne family’s business affairs. Although Frances Bennett held shares, she rarely came to the company aside from the occasional board meeting.
Frances Bennett handed the contract to the general manager of finance and said nonchalantly, "This is a new contract. Damian has already approved it. If you see no issues after reviewing it, go ahead and transfer the funds."
Hearing that it was a new contract, the general manager of finance was confused but didn’t overthink it.
’After all, who would doubt President Hawthorne’s mother?’
But when he saw the amount, the finance manager still hesitated.
"President Bennett, 1.5 billion is a rather large sum. Have you confirmed this with President Hawthorne? Are we really supposed to transfer the full amount in one go?"
’The company usually pays for projects with a deposit followed by a final payment. For a sum this large, it’s even more unlikely that it would all be transferred at once.’
Frances Bennett’s expression stiffened.
’I forgot about that and just wrote down the total amount.’
’If they only pay the deposit, there’s no telling when this will be over.’
The thought of Caleb Kramer sending her threatening messages every day kept Frances Bennett from sleeping at night.
"Just transfer it. The manager of this project is one of our own. It’s fine."
Hearing this, the finance manager was finally reassured.
’If it’s one of our own, then a few special privileges are normal.’
"President Bennett, please wait a moment. We will transfer the funds within approximately three business days."
"I can’t wait that long. Do it now!" Frances Bennett gritted her teeth. "This payment is urgent."
’Three days... who knows what could happen?’
Although the finance manager found it a bit strange, he didn’t dare argue too much with Frances Bennett.
’After all, she’s President Hawthorne’s mother.’
’Who would dare offend the boss’s mother?’
"Alright, I’ll have the finance department work overtime to get the money transferred sooner."
Hearing this, Frances Bennett finally felt completely at ease.
She walked out of the company and sent a message to Caleb Kramer: The money will arrive in the next couple of days. Take it and get lost. Don’t ever show your face to me again.
Caleb Kramer: Don’t worry. Once I have the money, I’ll disappear for good.
...
Cecilia Nathan returned to her music shop.
Ever since her identity was exposed, many people had come to the music shop just to gawk, so she had been forced to close it temporarily.
But she had poured her heart and soul into the shop, so she still came to check on it from time to time.
This time, there were far fewer people at the shop’s entrance.
But Cecilia saw a familiar face—Mona Nathan.
Mona Nathan was standing at the entrance with her bodyguards, having driven away more than half of the gawkers.
Ever since the mix-up, her father had been forced to resign from the company.
The company had never been her father’s private property; in the end, it was Linden Nathan’s backing that had kept it stable.
They had thought a lifetime job within the family business was secure, never expecting to completely offend Linden Nathan.
Mona thought, ’If I can just atone for our mistake, sincerely apologize to Cecilia, and earn her forgiveness, maybe Father can get his old position back.’
Upon seeing Mona Nathan, Cecilia turned to leave, but Mona had placed lookouts everywhere, waiting for her to appear.
"Cousin!" Mona Nathan cried out in pleasant surprise. "Cousin Cecilia, I’ve been waiting for you for so long."
As soon as Cecilia appeared, the reporters and onlookers lying in wait all spotted her.
Winter had passed and the weather was gradually warming. Cecilia was wearing only a long-sleeved silk dress with a pink blazer, which made her fair skin seem to glow.
With her delicate features and tall, slender figure, she was a picturesque sight just standing there.
Mona Nathan was attractive in her own right, but when she thought about the gap between herself and Cecilia, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of lament.
’Cecilia is just too beautiful.’
"Miss Cecilia Nathan, now that your true identity as Selina Nathan is out, does Mr. Damian Hawthorne have any regrets?"
"We heard Ms. Frances Bennett has already publicly stated her regrets. What are your thoughts on that?"
"If Mr. Damian Hawthorne tried to pursue you again, would you take him back?"
The reporters swarmed her, and soon, Cecilia was surrounded by the crowd.
Mona Nathan gave her bodyguards a look, and they quickly moved to protect Cecilia. "Make way, excuse me, please make way."
Although Cecilia didn’t want to be indebted to Mona, the crowd was large and chaotic, so she had no choice but to let the bodyguards help.
Having been a fangirl before, Mona Nathan certainly understood the importance of public opinion.
After escorting Cecilia safely into the music shop, Mona Nathan immediately took out some money, handed it to her bodyguard, and said, "Treat the reporters to some tea. We’re buying all of those photos."
"That’s not necessary," Cecilia said, quickly stopping her when she saw her about to spend money. "I’m not a celebrity. It doesn’t matter."
"Cousin, you have no idea what those reporters will write once these photos get out," Mona Nathan insisted. "Reporters these days have no professional ethics. They’ll make anything up just to get attention."
"They wouldn’t have known I was here if you hadn’t just shouted," Cecilia retorted, not forgetting Mona’s cry of "Cousin."
It was her shout that had drawn the reporters’ attention to her.
Called out by Cecilia, Mona Nathan was suddenly mortified.
"If you came to ask me about your father’s resignation, I’m sorry, but I can’t do anything about it."
’People don’t show up out of the blue for no reason. Mona must be here for more than just a simple visit.’
"Oh, Cousin Cecilia, you’ve misunderstood. I’m not here about my father. I... I just came to apologize." Mona’s eyes and nose reddened. "Ever since that huge mess, my mom has been chewing out my dad and me. I came today specifically to apologize to you."
Cecilia gave a slight laugh. "There’s no need to apologize. I’m not one to fuss over such small things. But I can’t stop my dad’s decision."
"I know you’re magnanimous, Cousin. Our family accepts this outcome. After all, we were arrogant and were the ones in the wrong first."
"Mm." A small smile played on Cecilia’s lips. "If there’s nothing else, you should head back. You and your bodyguards standing here are scaring off potential customers."
"Oh, right, Cousin. There’s another secret I think you absolutely need to know." Mona Nathan gave a mysterious smile. "It’s about Miles Sinclair. Do you want to hear it?"
’About Miles Sinclair?’
Cecilia looked up. Mona Nathan smiled slyly, her bright, clear eyes filled with gossip.
Her bright red lips parted, her clear voice tinged with uncontrollable excitement. "Cousin, I don’t know how you and Miles Sinclair got together, but did you know he’s dated someone before?"
