'I'm the Villain, But the System Made Me OP'-Chapter 29: Everything’s On Fire
Draven woke up to someone shaking him.
"Get up get up get up—"
"What the—" He jerked awake. *Thump.* Nearly fell out of bed. "Seraphina? What—"
"It’s happening. The leak. House Brennan." She was already dressed. Hair done. Eyes bright. Excited? No. Satisfied. "Father says come downstairs now. Everyone’s losing their minds."
"What time is it?"
"Six. Doesn’t matter. This is—you need to see this."
She practically dragged him out of bed. Draven stumbled after her. Still in sleep pants. No shirt. Hair probably looked like shit. Down the hallway. *Tap tap tap tap.* Her footsteps fast. His trying to keep up.
Duke Valerius’s study was chaos.
Three advisors already there. Newspapers everywhere. *Rustle rustle rustle.* Crystal balls showing different locations in the capital. One advisor was yelling into a communication device. Another was scribbling notes so fast the pen was smoking.
"—don’t care what Brennan’s saying, the documents are authentic—"
"—Treasury already seized two of their estates—"
"—public outrage is—"
"Quiet," Valerius ordered. Everyone shut up. He saw Draven. "Good. You’re here. Look at this."
Threw a newspaper at him. *Thwap.* Draven caught it.
Front page. Huge headline: "HOUSE BRENNAN TAX FRAUD EXPOSED - Millions Stolen from Royal Treasury."
Below that. Smaller text. Details. Numbers. A whole fucking breakdown of six years of illegal shit.
"How—" Draven started.
"Someone leaked everything," the scared woman advisor said. She looked delighted. "Financial records. Bribe receipts. Shell company documentation. Everything. To the *Chronicle*, three magistrates, and the Royal Treasury auditors simultaneously."
"All at once?" Draven looked at Duke Valerius. "That’s not subtle."
"Don’t need subtle. Need effective." The Duke was practically glowing. "Brennan’s finished. Two million in back taxes plus penalties. They don’t have it. Not liquid anyway. They’ll have to sell everything."
"Aldric’s biggest donor," one advisor said. "Gone. Just like that."
"He’s gonna know this was—" Draven started.
"He can suspect all he wants," Valerius interrupted. "Can’t prove anything. Leaks happen. Rivals expose rivals. That’s politics." He grinned. Predatory. "Week one. Success. House Thorne is next."
[System]: *HOLY SHIT IT WORKED*
*Brennan is IMPLODING*
*Capital is going INSANE*
*Aldric lost his sugar daddy*
*This is beautiful*
Seraphina was reading over Draven’s shoulder. "They’re calling for arrests. Criminal charges. The Royal Court is demanding investigations."
"How long until they’re bankrupt?" Draven asked.
"Two weeks," an advisor said. "Maybe three. They’ll try to liquidate assets but nobody’s buying from a scandal house. Market value crashes."
"And Aldric?"
"Scrambling." The Duke pulled out another document. "Got reports he met with five different noble houses yesterday. Begging for funding. Three said no outright. Two are negotiating terms that’ll bleed him dry."
"He’s desperate," Seraphina said.
"Desperate people do stupid things," Valerius agreed. "Watch for—"
*BANG BANG BANG.*
Someone pounding on the door. *BANG BANG.*
"My lord! Urgent message! Royal Guards at the gate!"
Everyone froze.
"Shit," Draven said.
"Stay calm," Valerius ordered. To the servants: "Let them in. Study only. Nobody goes past this floor."
Doors opened. *SLAM.* Five Royal Guards. Full armor. The lead one carried a sealed letter. Royal crest. Gold wax.
"Duke Valerius," the guard said. Formal. Stiff. "Crown Prince Aldric requests your presence at the palace. Immediately."
"For what purpose?"
"To discuss—" the guard glanced at Draven. "—recent political developments. And the custody of Lord Draven Arclight."
Oh fuck.
"Custody?" Draven’s void core pulsed. *Crackle.* Black energy flickering without him meaning to.
"Lord Arclight is a person of interest in multiple investigations," the guard continued. "The Crown Prince believes he would be safer in royal—"
"No." Valerius’s voice could’ve frozen lava. "Absolutely not. Lord Arclight is under House Valerius protection. He’s not going anywhere."
"My lord, this is a royal reque—"
"I don’t care if it’s a royal demand written in the King’s blood. He. Stays. Here." The Duke stepped forward. His mana signature flared. A-Rank. Powerful. Angry. "Or do you want to explain to the Royal Court why you started a war between great houses?"
The guards looked at each other. Nervous.
"I’ll... I’ll relay your response to His Highness," the lead guard said.
"You do that." Valerius didn’t move. "And tell Aldric if he wants Draven, he can come ask himself. Personally. To my face."
The guards left fast. *Stomp stomp stomp.* Door slamming. *BANG.*
Silence.
Then Seraphina said: "Well. That’s not good."
"Understatement," Draven muttered.
"He’s desperate," Valerius said. "The Brennan leak hit harder than expected. He’s trying to secure you as leverage. Or eliminate you as a threat."
"What do we do?"
"Nothing. You stay here. Protected. We move to phase two."
"Phase two was next week—"
"Phase two is now." The Duke looked at his advisors. "House Thorne. Leak it. Today. All of it."
"But we haven’t—" one advisor started.
"I don’t care if it’s messy. Do it. Aldric’s moving fast. We move faster." Valerius was already walking to his desk. *Thump thump.* Pulling out documents. "Get the dungeon records to the Guild. The worker contracts to the magistrates. The death reports to the *Chronicle*. Move."
The advisors scattered. *Rustle rustle.* Papers everywhere. Crystal balls activating. Communication spells flying.
Complete chaos.
Draven just stood there. Half-dressed. Confused. "I thought we were being strategic. Methodical."
"We were. Aldric changed the game." Seraphina grabbed his arm. Pulled him aside. "This is actually good."
"How is this good? He just tried to—"
"He showed his hand. He’s scared. Scared people make mistakes." Her eyes were sharp. Calculating. "We push now. Break his support faster than he can recover."
[System]: *PLAN ACCELERATING*
*This is either genius or disaster*
*Probably both*
*Hold on to your ass*
---
Two hours later.
House Thorne scandal hit the papers.
Draven was in the training yard when he heard. Trying to practice. Trying not to think about Royal Guards trying to kidnap him.
*WHOOSH.* Void Lance. Aimed at target.
Missed. *CRACK.* Hit the wall instead.
"Fuck!"
"Your aim’s still shit," Lyra said.
Draven spun around. She was just there. Sitting on the wall. Legs dangling. How long had she been watching?
"How did you—the wards should’ve—"
"Please. I’m an assassin. Wards are suggestions." She hopped down. *Thump.* Walked over. Pulled a newspaper from inside her jacket. "This just came out. Thought you’d wanna see."
Front page. Again. "HOUSE THORNE SLAVE LABOR EXPOSED - Dozens Dead in Illegal Dungeon Operations."
"That’s—we weren’t supposed to—that wasn’t for another week—" Draven was reading fast. Documents. Evidence. Deaths. Everything.
"Plans change," Lyra said. Casual. "Aldric tried to grab you this morning. Duke went nuclear. Leaked everything early."
"This is too fast. We’re supposed to be strategic—"
"Strategic’s over. Now we’re brawling." She grinned. "More fun anyway."
"Lyra—"
"Aldric lost two major houses in one day. He’s fucked. Completely fucked. His political base is collapsing in real-time." She started listing on her fingers. "Brennan’s bankrupt. Thorne’s facing criminal charges. Every noble house with half a brain is distancing themselves. The Royal Court’s in chaos. And Aldric just showed everyone he’s scared enough to try kidnapping people."
"He could escalate. Send more assassins. Or—"
"Oh he definitely will." Lyra wasn’t concerned. "But here’s the thing. You’re in a fortress. S-Rank. Protected by one of the strongest houses in the kingdom. He can’t touch you without starting a war."
"So I’m trapped here."
"Safe here." She corrected. "Big difference."
Draven wanted to argue. Couldn’t. She was right.
His comm crystal buzzed. *Bzzt bzzt.* Different tone. Astrid’s emergency signal.
"Shit. I need to—"
"Go. I’ll keep watch out here." Lyra was already moving. Shadows swirling. "Also House Kastel’s affair thing? Leaked an hour ago. Someone jumped the schedule."
"WHAT?"
"Check the news!" She was gone. *Whoosh.* Dissolved into darkness.
Draven ran. *Thump thump thump.* Back into the estate. Grabbed a paper from a servant.
Third headline: "HOUSE KASTEL AFFAIR SCANDAL - Noble Caught with Minister’s Wife."
All three. In one day. What the fuck.
[System]: *OKAY SO*
*All three scandals leaked simultaneously*
*This was NOT the plan*
*But Aldric’s support base is IMPLODING*
*Like watching a political nuclear bomb*
*This is insane*
---
Library. Astrid was there. Pacing. Again. *Tap tap tap tap tap.*
"Did you see—" Draven started.
"The scandals? Yes. Everyone’s seen them. The capital’s going insane. Three major houses collapsed in six hours." She stopped pacing. Looked at him. "The Church is moving up your trial."
"What?"
"The Inquisitors. They were taking their time. Building a case. Now they’re rushing. Emergency tribunal. Three days."
"Three days?! That’s—"
"Because you’re destabilizing the kingdom." Astrid’s voice was sharp. Clinical. "Three house collapses. Aldric losing power. Political chaos everywhere. The Church thinks you’re the cause. That you’re using void corruption to manipulate events."
"That’s insane. I’m not—those are just—"
"They don’t care about facts. They see correlation. S-Rank heretic appears. Kingdom starts falling apart. Therefore you’re the problem." She pushed her glasses up. Hands shaking. "They’re going to arrest you. In three days. Formal charges. Heresy. Corruption. Destabilizing the realm."
"Can they do that?"
"They’re the Church. They can do whatever they want." She sat down. *Thump.* Looked exhausted. "Draven, I’m trying to help but I don’t know how. You’re in a fortress but that won’t stop the Church. They’ll demand Duke Valerius hand you over. He might resist but—"
"He will resist."
"For how long? A week? A month? Eventually the Church puts enough pressure and political cost gets too high and—" She stopped. Took a breath. "I’m scared. For you. For Elara. For all of us."
[Astrid Affection: 95/100]
[Fear: 78/100]
[She’s loyal but terrified]
Draven sat next to her. "We have three days."
"To do what?"
"Figure something out."
"That’s not a plan."
"It’s all I’ve got right now." He pulled out his comm crystal. Duke’s private line. "But I’m gonna start by telling Valerius what the fuck just happened to our carefully planned political war."
The crystal connected. *Bzzt.*
"Draven," Valerius’s voice came through. Tense. "I assume you’ve seen—"
"All three scandals leaked. Same day. That wasn’t the plan."
"I know. Someone jumped ahead. I’m investigating who—"
"Church moved up my trial. Three days."
Silence on the other end.
Then: "Fuck."
Yeah. That summed it up pretty well.
"Emergency meeting," Valerius said. "War room. Now. Bring Astrid."
*Click.* Crystal went dead.
Draven looked at Astrid. "Ready for more chaos?" 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Do I have a choice?"
"Not really."
They ran.
