Just as Adam turned to leave the office the Emperor moved.

He moved with a speed that belied his age and his high station. In a flash he was at the door kicking it shut with a resounding boom that echoed in the silent office.

He had already sensed Adam’s intention to leave.

He had deliberately chosen not to react immediately.

He had been waiting for this moment for Adam to make his move. He knew it would give him the opening he needed to regain control of the conversation.

The Emperor now stood between Adam and the door. His expression was a mixture of frustration and a new calculating intensity.

"I too," he said his voice a low dangerous growl "have a condition for you Eric."

Adam was a little surprised by this. He turned back his own expression one of polite if wary curiosity. He wondered what the Emperor could possibly want from him.

The Principal who had been watching this high-stakes game of chicken with a growing sense of dread was also taken aback.

"David," he interjected a note of hopeful surprise in his voice "does this mean you are agreeing to Eric’s terms? Are you going to help him?"

The Emperor stepped back from the door creating a small space between them. Adam seeing this also took his hand off the door handle. He stepped back his gaze still fixed on the Emperor.

Adam knows the Emperor and he knew that the Emperor would definitely impose some conditions.

But Adam is ready, no matter what conditions the Emperor imposes.

The Emperor looked at Adam his eyes now sharp and focused.

"If," he said his voice now that of a ruler making a proposition "you agree to my one condition then I will not only help you but I will do so wholeheartedly. I will personally sponsor your new group The New Warriors. And I will ensure that all of the Academy’s resources are made available to you and your members."

Adam was genuinely surprised by this. The Emperor was not just conceding to his demands. He was offering a full unconditional partnership. This was more than he had hoped for.

"My Lord Emperor," Adam said his voice now a little more formal "what is your condition?"

The Emperor took a deep breath.

"I want you Eric," he said his voice now filled with a father’s hope and a ruler’s ambition

"to remove my daughter Monica from the Golden Group and have her join your group instead. And then over the next four years I want you to make her as strong as you are. I want you to train her."

Adam’s expression did not change. He showed no surprise at all at this request.

He had on some level anticipated this. He knew that the Emperor’s primary concern would always be his own daughter his heir. It was a natural thing for a father.

"I am willing to take Monica into my group," Adam began but before he could say any more the Emperor cut him off.

"Remember," the Emperor said his voice now a stern warning

"I will not force Monica to leave the Golden Group. You will have to convince her to join your group yourself. You will have one month to bring her into your group. If you succeed I will be your group’s personal sponsor for the next four years. And I will grant you unrestricted access to all of the Academy’s vast resources. But," he added his voice now a low dangerous whisper

"if you fail if you cannot convince Monica to join your group within one month then I will immediately withdraw my sponsorship. And I will also place severe restrictions on all the resources that your group was receiving. Your group will be cut off completely."

"I just need Emperor’s support for my group" Adam thought

The terms were clear the stakes incredibly high. It was a big gamble.

Adam looked at the Emperor a thoughtful almost calculating expression on his face. He then looked away his gaze unfocused as he considered the proposal. After a few moments of silent contemplation a slow confident smile spread across his face.

"I accept your terms Lord Emperor," he said.

With that he walked back over to the sofa and sat down. He then looked at the Principal Logan. "Mr. Principal," he said his voice now brisk and business-like "I do not have much time. I need to get back to my class."

The Principal understood immediately what Adam meant. "Eric" or rather Adam was now asking for the Emperor’s signature. He was asking for the official sanction for his new group. He had held up his end of the bargain.

The Principal looked at Adam then he looked at the Emperor. "I will take care of all the necessary paperwork for you," he said. "You may return to your class now Eric."

Adam hearing this knew that his work here was done. He had achieved everything he had set out to do and more.

He smiled a genuine triumphant smile this time. And then with a slight nod to the Principal and the Emperor he stood up.

He walked out of the office leaving the two most powerful men on the continent to finalize the details of their new and very unusual arrangement.

He had won this negotiation completely. Now he just had to convince a very angry princess to join his new group.

And then Adam will have to start his main plan which he has thought of for this entire academy.
