Chapter 187: Alina’s First Day

Hearing Adam’s firm promise Alina turned towards him on the park bench. The despair that had clouded her eyes began to recede just a little. A tiny flicker of her old resilience returned.

She took a deep breath a shaky sound in the quiet evening air. And then she began to tell him what had happened. She began to explain the source of her profound sadness.

The scene flashed back. It was the first day at the Academy. As Alina separated from Eric at the fork in the path she followed the female Academy staff member. She was led towards the girls’ dormitory.

When she went inside the dormitory compound she saw a scene very similar to the one Eric had faced. A large group of new first-year girls was already gathered in the center of the courtyard. They were standing in a tense silent cluster. And surrounding them were many older students second and third-year girls.

They were all wearing the same gray Academy uniform. But they also wore jackets of different colors over their uniforms. The jackets were gold red blue and black. They represented the four powerful student factions.

Seeing this Alina was very surprised. She had not expected this kind of welcoming ceremony. She walked over and quietly joined the group of other first-year girls. She stood with them waiting to see what would happen next.

Then four senior girls one from each of the colored factions stepped forward. They began to speak one by one explaining the "unwritten rules" of the Academy just as the boys had done. They spoke of joining a group of showing respect to their seniors of the punishments that would come to those who did not obey. The atmosphere was thick with tension and fear.

Alina listened to their words her heart sinking. She had been forced to join the Golden Group earlier by the Prince of their faction. She had not known what it meant then. Now she was starting to understand. She was trapped.

Then Alina saw Princess Monica enter the courtyard. Monica who had also been assigned to the Golden Group walked past the gathered students. She did not stop. The senior girls who were giving the intimidating speech the leaders of the four factions all saw the princess.

They immediately stopped talking. They bowed their heads respectfully towards Monica. But they did not ask her to stop. They did not tell her to join the group of first-years.

They let her walk by without a single word of challenge. Monica just walked past everyone as if they weren’t even there and entered the main dormitory building. She was treated differently. She was above their rules.

Alina watched her go a feeling of unease settling in her stomach. The rules here were clearly not the same for everyone. After Monica had gone the welcoming ceremony continued. And it was just as brutal as the one Eric had faced. Some girls who tried to defy the upperclassmen were punished.

Alina watched in horror as they were beaten and humiliated in front of everyone. She stood there her heart pounding with fear. She was grateful that she was already a member of the Golden Group.

At least she was safe from being an outcast. But she also felt a deep sense of dread. What kind of place was this? And what would be expected of her as a member of the most powerful faction? She didn’t know. And she was afraid to find out.

Her dream of coming to the Academy had quickly turned into a waking nightmare. She had never felt so alone and so powerless in her entire life.

Just as Monica was about to enter the main dormitory building she paused. She turned back to look at the crowd of nervous first-year girls. Her gaze swept over them and then landed directly on Alina.

She raised a hand and pointed a single imperious finger at her. "I want that girl Alina to be included in the Golden Group," she declared. Her voice was not loud but it carried an authority that cut through the tense atmosphere.

Hearing this command from the princess the girls in the Golden Group’s leadership circle looked at each other. Then a girl named Katrina who was the official second-year representative for the Golden Group stepped forward.

She was the one who had been leading their part of the intimidating welcoming ceremony. She walked up to Monica her expression respectful. They began to speak to each other in low tones a quiet conversation that the other first-years could not hear.

Alina standing in the crowd was very surprised. She was also very scared. She didn’t know what was happening. But when Monica the Emperor’s daughter had arrived and pointed at her like that Alina felt a small flicker of relief.

At least the immediate threat of being publicly humiliated like some of the other girls was gone. But she was still deeply worried. She wondered to herself What group did Eric end up in? I hope he is safe.

After a few moments Katrina the Golden Group representative stepped back from her conversation with Monica. She turned and looked at the leaders of the other three factions the Red Blue and Black groups.

She gave them a small almost imperceptible shake of her head. The leaders of the other groups understood immediately. They could not go against the wishes of Princess Monica especially on such a small matter. It was not worth the trouble.

The four representatives then all looked at Alina. Katrina spoke for all of them. "You can go to your room for now," she said her voice now neutral and professional. "We will register you into the Golden Group tomorrow morning."

Hearing this Alina let out a deep breath of relief she didn’t realize she had been holding. She quickly left the courtyard her heart still pounding from the stress and the fear.

The next morning as Alina left her dormitory room she saw that all the first-year girls were gathering into their different groups. They were being organized by their seniors. Katrina the Golden Group representative saw Alina and gestured for her to come over. Just as Alina was about to join the other Golden Group members she saw Princess Monica.

Monica was standing a short distance away with a few other high-ranking noble girls. Monica pointed at Alina again and then gestured for Alina to come over to her. Seeing the princess’s summons Alina quickly walked over to Monica her heart filled with a nervous apprehension.

She had been saved from the other groups but she now had to deal directly with the proud and unpredictable princess. Her first real day at the Academy had begun.

Alina spent most of her time near Princess Monica. She had been assigned to the Golden Group by the princess’s command. Now she was expected to be part of her entourage her circle of followers. It was an unwanted honor.

As soon as Alina entered the grand auditorium for the induction program she saw Adam’s incredible performance.

She watched with a mixture of awe and a familiar sense of dread as he single-handedly dismantled the upperclassmen’s power structure. And she especially found out with the rest of the student body that Adam had formed a new group right there in front of everyone.

Hearing this Alina felt very sad. A deep sense of disappointment and loss washed over her. She also wanted to join Adam’s group The New Warriors.

She wanted to stand with him with the only person she truly felt a connection to in this strange and dangerous place. But she was already trapped in the Golden Group.

Her fate had been decided for her by the whim of a princess. Alina was very sad that Adam hadn’t told her about his plan before. Alina knew that Adam was the one doing all these things. The real Eric the kind and gentle boy she had traveled with was just a puppet in his hands. He was a vessel for Adam’s immense and terrifying power.

As soon as the induction program ended Monica was very angry. She was furious about the way Adam had dismissed her. She stormed out of the auditorium without looking at anyone. She entered her dormitory building in a furious huff her entourage of noble girls trailing behind her.

As soon as Alina started to enter her own dormitory building she was stopped. A group of older girls from the Golden Group stood in front of her blocking her path. Second-year and third-year girls were present in this group.

All of them were members of the powerful Golden Group. Their golden jackets seemed to gleam with an intimidating light. Then one of the girls the leader of the group stepped forward. She looked Alina up and down with a sneer.

"I have heard that you are a companion of that arrogant boy Eric," she said her voice full of contempt. "And you are a commoner on top of that."

Seeing so many older girls in front of her and feeling their hostile gazes Alina got very scared. But she stood there gathering her courage. She would not show them her fear. She lifted her chin and met the leader’s gaze.

But things were about to get even worse for Alina. All the girls suddenly looked at Alina. The leader smiled a cruel smile. "We have a lot of work for you to do commoner," she said. "You have to do it. Otherwise we will tell you the consequences."

Their threat hung in the air a promise of pain and humiliation if she dared to refuse. Alina was trapped. And her life at the Academy was about to become very difficult. She was paying the price for her association with Eric and with Adam.

The other girls in the Golden Group saw her as an outsider a friend of their new rival. And they were going to make her suffer for it. She was alone and surrounded by enemies. Her dream of coming to the Academy had become a nightmare.
