I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 173: You might lose everything
"And you are?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
The old man seated at the head of the long table raised a brow. It took him a heartbeat to register the presence of these uninvited guests.
His eyes narrowed as he glanced at the badges that were being proudly flaunted at their chest.
He wasn’t pleased. Even a representative from the Galactic Union shouldn’t have the gall to barge into the Lionel private chambers without an appointment.
"Gregory Weinstein. Galactic Union Senior Investigation Team, Department Zero."
Leo pulled a crumpled slip of paper from his pocket and flicked his wrist. He flashed it with the speed of a seasoned pro, the ID appearing as nothing more than a blur of ink before he tucked it away with casual nonchalance.
"This is my team." Leo gestured vaguely to the group behind him, his expression filled with bureaucratic boredom.
Before the Lionel Family Head could even draw breath to say something, Leo pressed the advantage.
"The junior team has been fumbling this case for far too long. Headquarters have lost patience. We’ve been dispatched to take over effective immediately."
The inner workings of the Galactic Union were something that was often kept a secret.
Even a man of the Family Head’s status didn’t know if a Department Zero actually existed, but the sheer, brazen confidence in Leo’s voice didn’t let him have any second thoughts.
Who would be suicidal enough to lie about something so easily checked, after all.
The old man’s subconscious filled in the blanks. It had been a long time. The case was stalled. It made kind of sense that the ’clean-up crew’ had finally arrived.
"Everyone, out. We will discuss this later," the old man commanded, gesturing sharply to his descendants.
As they rose, he threw a scorching glare toward his butler. Even if these were Union agents, they should have been intercepted at the banquet, not escorted into the inner sanctum like VIPs.
The butler shrank back, his face filled with regret and guilt. He wanted to explain that he hadn’t so much ’escorted’ them as he had been ’steamrolled’ by them, but the opportunity never came.
One by one, the Lionel heirs filed past Leo. Most kept their heads down, but a few offered polite nods as they hurried for the exit.
Even Fiona walked past Leo, casting a few glances.
Although Leo had used proper disguise, he was still taken aback at the sight of Fiona. He was inwardly wondering if she was going to recognise him.
Fortunately, she also offered a casual nod like others as she left the room, not recognising him.
"You can also wait outside. I wouldn’t want to intimidate the host with our numbers."
Leo sent Yang and the others out as well. However, he didn’t send them too far, telling them to simply wait out the door so that they can wish in if necessary.
In any case, there were a few things that he couldn’t say before Yang and Ulen, who were still under a few assumptions.
Once everyone had left, only the Lionel Family Head, and Leo were left behind. With the door closing, Leo stepped forward, and stood at the seat directly facing the Lionel Family Head without waiting for permission.
At this moment, he was representing the union. To keep up the act and not give them any room to doubt his identity, he was as brazen as he could be, without being too insulting.
"So, can I ask why you came here? After all, I already granted the previous team all the information that I had. There isn’t anything else that I can tell you. After all, if I knew more, wouldn’t I have dealt with this myself?"
As the man spoke, he looked less like an old man that was on the verge of retiring, and more like someone at the prime of his life.
"Don’t worry. I haven’t come to ask you about the identity of the culprit. Instead, I came to tell you that we already have a suspect in mind. We also found out how he did it," Leo said, making the old man immediately pay attention.
"You found him? Did you arrest him? Who is that bastard?!" The old man stood up, slamming his hand on the table.
He had been trying to find the culprit for a really long time. Even he suspected many people, including the enemies that he had made along the way of establishing his financial empire.
Unfortunately, he still couldn’t find the person. That was the biggest regret of his life.
He even wondered if the culprit had already gone into hiding, making it impossible to find him anymore. But now he heard that the person was found? He couldn’t help but be excited.
"From what we managed to learn, the source of the explosions wasn’t outside. They were within the treasuries, which gave us our first clue," Leo said, his expressions growing dark
"That bastard used a very clever method to blow up your branches... He somehow managed to disguise the explosives as treasures, and submit them to the branches. And then... You know the rest."
"Who is it?!" the old man asked again. "If you can hand that person over to me, I will give you whatever you ask! Just let me deal with him!"
"Don’t worry. He is already in our custody. Unfortunately, I can’t hand him over. He is on the way to our headquarters. He’ll be spending his life there," Leo explained.
The old man clenched his fist. Didn’t it mean that the person who caused him so many losses, was already in custody of the union? He was going to be punished by the union, not giving him any opportunity to torture that bastard.
"Is there nothing that can be done? Can’t you do me this favor?" the old man asked.
Leo was quite intrigued by the eagerness of the old man to torture him.
"I told you that I can’t help you. More importantly, I came here to inform you about something more serious. It’s about the information we managed to learn from that bastard... If it’s correct, then you might be on the way to losing everything!"
