Chapter 243: Chapter 243: Board Meeting

Leo didn’t realize when it happened, but he had become quite interested in this conflict for some reason. It even felt as if he was watching a real life thriller movie.

He couldn’t help but rub his forehead at the realization. Still, he didn’t feel any sympathy for either of them. He had long since stopped considering them human.

To give himself peace of mind, he had long started seeing them as goblins that looked like humans.

He waved his hand, and a bucket of popcorn came out of the desk next to him.

He placed the popcorn bucket on his lap and watched the scene.

....

Mark stepped into the engineering bay, the soles of his boots not silent in the least.

He deliberately made a sound to flush her out. He knew she was terrified. It wasn’t because she was afraid of bloodshed or that she was some naive soul.

He knew her the best. He knew that she was someone that had killed more than all of them combined.

With her innocent face, she had managed to win the trust of many survivors in the apocalypse, only to kill them later. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

After all, if the enemy was stronger, their gang often sent her to their camp to win their trust and then kill them, letting their gang take over the resources.

He knew how cunning and brutal that girl was. She was also a good actor at the same time, which made it hard for most people to see her real face.

Of course, that was only for outsiders. For their group, she was still quite innocent and they could often trust her.

Mark was certain that she didn’t run away because she was scared of bloodshed. She simply left to lay a trap for them. Even though she made it seem like she wasn’t interested in the selection, she was definitely planning to win.

"Sarah?" Mark’s voice echoed, sweet yet terrifyingly calm. "I know you’re here. Don’t make this harder than it has to be. You heard him... only one can survive. If you love me, you’ll make this easy. You’ll let me have this future for both of us."

Leo leaned into his hand, a weird smirk on his face. "Does he really think it will work? Points for audacity, but zero for originality."

On the screen, Sarah didn’t move. She was smarter than Mark gave her credit for. She knew that in Mark’s future, she was nothing but a corpse he stepped over to reach a throne.

She adjusted her grip on the plasma torch.

Mark rounded the corner of the coolant pillar, his dagger leading the way.

Soon, he heard the sound of sobbing, coming from nearby. He knew her... He was certain that she was going to play the weak girl card.

He was certain that he was going to find her sobbing as she tried to express her grief and come closer to him, only to stab him.

He was prepared for that. That’s why, he maintained some distance so that he could react even if she had managed to find some knives.

Unfortunately, he didn’t expect that Sarah didn’t need to sneak closer to him and use his trust. She had already found something that she could use.

The plasma torch roared to life, a concentrated stream of light rushed out at several thousand degrees. It wasn’t a graceful weapon, but at three feet, it was absolute.

Mark let out a strangled yelp, throwing himself backward as the heat made the hair on his arms rise in fear.

"You! You bitch!" Mark exclaimed, scrambling away, his face red and blistered. The lover mask had finally shattered, leaving behind the harsh reality of his malice. "I was going to make it quick! Now, I’m going to peel you!"

"You were never going to let me live!" Sarah shouted back. She swung the torch in a wide, clumsy arc, the heat forcing Mark to stay back. "I saw your face when the gravity turned off, Mark! You didn’t even look at me! You just looked at the dagger!"

"Don’t pretend to be some innocent being, as if you aren’t doing the same thing! You didn’t run because you didn’t want to kill us! You can because you couldn’t kill us! You slut!"

Leo watched the feed, tossing another popcorn in his mouth. The plasma torch was effective, but it had a very short range. That’s why it was only used for repair and never as a weapon.

He tapped a command on his console. Suddenly, the lights in the engineering bay began to flicker, cycling through emergency red.

"Let’s see how they handle a change in the environment," Leo mumbled.

In the red strobe of the emergency lights, Mark lunged. He didn’t go for Sarah; he went for the dagger he had dropped out of shock.

As his fingers closed around the hilt, Sarah also came to her senses and lunged with the torch, but the heavy weapon was slow. Mark rolled under the beam, the heat passing inches above his head, and came up swinging.

The blade sliced across Sarah’s arm. She cried out, the torch slipping from her grip and clattering across the floor, still releasing its deadly blue flame.

Mark stood over her, his shadow looking monstrous in the red light. He raised the dagger, his expression one of manic triumph. "I win, Sarah. I’m the one. I’m going to become a disciple."

"I will send you to the afterlife, so don’t forget to watch over me from above, as I rise to heights you couldn’t ever imagine!"

"Wait," Sarah suddenly exclaimed, her face filled with fear as her life and death was on the line. "I... I have something to tell you! You will regret it if you don’t listen to me!’

Mark frowned, looking up at the nearest camera. "What do you have to say? Are you delaying time? Do you think it will change anything? It will only delay the inevitable..."

"What? Are you scared of a weak woman like me?" Sarah asked, showing a weak smile on her face. "I don’t even have a weapon anymore. What are you scared of?"

"I’m scared of you? Hah, in your dreams. I just don’t have time to waste on you. So I’ll give you a quick death."

He took a knee next to the girl, who couldn’t change anything. After all, the weapon that she had, was kicked far away by him now.

However, immediately, his expressions changed as he saw something metallic flash before his eyes.

Before he could even realise what happened, a screwdriver was throat in his neck.

However, in that moment, even before his mind could react, he subconsciously thrust his dagger, stabbing the girl.

The girl who had a triumphant smile on her lips a moment ago, looked in disbelief.

At that moment, the last two survivors had killed each other.

"That saves me some time..." Leo mumbled, shaking his head. He closed his eyes, and assigned the cleaning robots to take care of the bodies.

....

After what felt like an eternity for Leo, his ship finally reached the familiar place which was once called his home.

It was also the place where the Board Meeting of Alpha Corp was going to take place.
