Chapter 176: [Chapter - 176]

The mansion of Baron Volkov smelled like a stale ale and piss all over.

Royal Inspector Aris and General Arthur walked through the long, dark corridors of Volkov’s mansion, flanked by their Royal Guards.

Meanwhile, the Blackfang bandits lined on both sides of the halls, their hands resting on their weapons. As they watched the Royal Inspector and the Royal guards walk by, they just looked them with their dead eyes, not even bowing.

Arthur’s face was purple with rage, "This is an outrage," he muttered, his heavy boots stomping on the expensive rugs, "A bunch of bandits guarding a Baron? He is in house arrest here."

"Don’t be impatient, General," Aris said smoothly, "Let us first meet the Baron."

Despite the Bandits swarming the mansion everywhere, no one stopped them, and they reached the master bedroom. A Blackfang guard even shoved the double doors open for them.

The room was sweltering hot. The fireplace was roaring despite the mild weather outside. Baron Volkov sat propped up in a massive bed, buried under thick furs.

He looked atrocious.

His face was sallow and sunken, his multiple chins sagging like deflated balloons. Deep, dark bags hung under his bloodshot eyes. He was sweating profusely, shaking like a wet dog in the winter.

Sitting on the windowsill, casually tossing a razor-sharp dagger into the air and catching it by the blade, was Bane, the trusted right hand of Belladonna.

He casually looked at the Royal Envoys and a smile bloomed on his face.

"High Inquisitor," Bane smirked, showing his teeth, "General."

Arthur’s hand went to his sword, "Get out, bandit whore. We are here to speak to the Baron on Royal business."

Bane stopped playing with his dagger as he heard the General, the smile on his face growing wider.

"We request privacy, Commander," Aris said, holding up a hand to stop Arthur. His tone was a lot more polite.

Bane hopped off the windowsill, as he walked slowly past the Envoys, eyeing the General for an extra second. But before he left, he stopped right next to Volkov’s bed.

He reached out and patted the fat Baron’s sweaty cheek.

Volkov flinched so hard his head smacked against the headboard.

"Have a nice chat, Baron," Bane whispered softly, but loud enough for even Aris and Arthur to hear, "Make sure you tell them exactly how you feel."

And with that, he turned and sauntered out of the room, shutting the doors behind him.

Volkov let out a shaky breath, clutching the furs to his chest.

Aris stepped forward, his eyes scanning the Baron. He reached out, and lifted the sheet from over the baron to give him a closer look for bruises, broken fingers, or burn marks.

But there was nothing of such sorts.

"Baron Volkov," Aris said, his voice laced with feigned concern, "You look dreadful. What truly ails you, My Lord?"

"My head," Volkov croaked, his voice trembling, "I took a terrible blow during the monster raid. I tried to protect them. But the pain... it is blinding. I can barely think."

Arthur scoffed, stepping up to the bed, "A blow to the head? What a joke."

"Look at him. Can he even lift a sword?"

"Why don’t you tell the truth? You look like a man who hasn’t slept in a month out of fear."

"So cut the crap, Volkov."

"You swore allegiance to the king. So don’t you dare lie."

"General!" Aris finally could not take it any longer and shot an angry look at the general, "Don’t you dare forget that you are standing in the presence of the Baron and not some common street thug."

"You better not cross the boundary, or I will have to make you remember the Kingdom’s hierarchy."

"That..." Arthur could not help but fall back under Aris’s gaze. Hierarchy in the kingdom was one thing no one dare play around with.

Meanwhile, Volkov shook his head frantically, "No! No, you don’t understand! The pain is real! I am not lying."

"Then explain the letter," Aris turned his attention back to Volkov, leaning over the bed, "Explain why you wrote to the Crown begging us to hand this city over to a common adventurer! Explain what happened to Lord Caelum!"

Volkov swallowed hard. He looked at the closed doors, terrified that Bane was still there, listening through the walls.

"That Lord Caelum was a coward!" Volkov spat out, his words tumbling over each other in a rush. "He ran away when the monsters hadn’t even broken through the walls. He packed his gold and fled like a rat!"

"I narrated the truth in the letter I wrote to His Majesty!"

"And Leo?" Aris asked calmly.

"Lord Leo is a saint!" Volkov yelled, tears actually welling up in his eyes. He sounded completely deranged. "He is a hero sent by the Gods! He stepped forward when despair hit the people. When there was no hope in sight!"

"He rallied the men behind him to lay their lives of their family."

"If it wasn’t for him, there would be no Auravale left, and everyone here would have turned Monster food."

Aris sighed as he looked at the pitiful Baron, "You are a Baron! You are supposed to take charge! Not hand the keys to a mercenary!"

"I am unfit!" Volkov wailed, snot running down his nose, "I am sick! My mind is broken! Leo is strong! The people love him! He saved my life!"

"And!" Volkov scrambled backward, pulling the furs up to his chin, "I have stayed here long enough. I think the air in this city is bad for my health. I am leaving tomorrow."

"Leaving?" Aris raised an eyebrow, "Where to?"

"To my Barony," Volkov nodded rapidly, "I have already settled the issue with Auravale. And it is in good, capable hands of Lord Leo. He is the only one who can keep the peace in this town."

"Lord Leo is the Chosen one!"

The exhausted Baron muttered, drifting back to sleep.
