Chapter 185: [Chapter - 185]

Walking out of Silver Route, Leo had still ample time to kill.

So instead of going back to the Lord’s manor, he walked through the massive double doors of the Temple of Light instead.

Every time he walks through the door, it is the same story.

Strong scent of burning incense.

The towering marble statue of a woman looking down on everyone else erected right in the middle.

And the God fearing people of this town would be kneeling in front of the statue, kowtowing for wealth and riches.

Leo ignored the Priest standing at the feet of the statue giving sermons or the priests who bowed to him.

He strode straight towards Remus’s private chambers at the back of the cathedral.

Nobody stopped him, in fact they opened the doors for him as he moved.

Inside, Leo was expecting to find High Priest Remus alone, probably counting coins or praying for a miracle.

Instead, he found Mage Aris there as well.

The Royal Inspector was sitting comfortably in a plush velvet chair near the fireplace.

He wasn’t wearing his intimidating, official grey robes today, instead he wore a plain brown tunic and trousers.

He held a delicate porcelain teacup in his hand, taking a slow sip as Leo walked in.

Meanwhile, Remus stood near his desk, wringing his hands, looking very tense at that moment.

"Ahhh! Mr Aris," Leo said with a pleasant smile on his face. He didn’t show surprise though, "I thought the Royal Envoy rode back to the Capital this morning."

"General Arthur rode out," Aris corrected smoothly. He placed his teacup back on a small silver tray, and looked back at Leo, "He took the surviving Royal Guards and the bodies of our dead comrades back to the Capital."

"He also carried my official report regarding the incident."

"Doesn’t answer why you stayed," Leo noted, pulling up a chair and sitting down without being asked, "Don’t you have someone waiting for you there?"

"There are more important matters to oversee here," Aris nodded. "Someone needs to supervise the transition of power in Auravale."

"The Kingdom cannot leave a vital border city completely unattended after such a... violent week."

"Ohhh! So you want to babysit me," Leo leaned back, spreading his legs wide, looking at Aris with a meaningful gaze, "Don’t believe me yet!"

Leo then turned his gaze towards Remus and decided to have a little fun.

"So, Priest Remus," Leo said loudly, ignoring Aris for a moment, "About ’that’ thing. You know... The hungry bastard that I have."

"It’s kind of rumbling very frequently these days."

"Did you get the ’stuff’ I asked for?"

Remus went completely rigid as he heard him. His eyes went wide with sheer panic.

He shot Leo a desperate look, his gaze darting quickly toward Aris and then back to Leo. He raised his hands slightly, trying to shush Leo without making it obvious to the Inquisitor.

"Ah," Remus choked out, clearing his throat loudly. He grabbed a handkerchief from his pocket and dabbed his sweating forehead, "Yes, Lord Leo. The... resources. To maintain the city... Yes!"

"You are talking about the help from the Temple, isn’t that right?"

"They will be delivered to your manor today itself."

"Good," Leo grinned, showing his teeth, "Because it likes the shiny stuff, Remus. If it doesn’t get enough to eat, it gets cranky."

"And when it gets cranky, things tend to get messy... Very messy!"

Remus swallowed hard, "I assure you, the Temple will spare no expense to keep that thi... The town stable."

Aris watched the exchange from his chair. He took another sip of tea, raising an eyebrow.

The Royal Inspector wasn’t stupid. He knew they were definitely not talking about the town and it’s people.

"That Thing" was something Remus cared about, and if he read the room right, Leo was blatantly extorting the High Priest of the Temple of Light right in front of him, and the High Priest was terrified enough to pay up.

Leo was an interesting character, every time Aris thought he knew enough about Leo, the latter managed to surprise him.

It just confirmed his assessment. Leo had the entire city on a tight leash.

"Let us move on to official business," Aris said, interrupting the two of them, "The report I sent with General Arthur was very clear. The King is a pragmatic man. He cares about results."

Aris leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"Baron Volkov has already recommended you earlier."

"And now with my formal endorsement, it should be pretty simple from here on."

"The Kingdom will recognise you. You will soon receive an official Royal Letter and a Ceremonial Sword marking you as the Warden and Lord of Auravale."

"That’s nice," Leo said, though he didn’t care much about ceremonial swords. He preferred ones that actually cut people.

"There is a catch though," Aris continued. "Typically, when a new Lord is raised, he must travel to the Capital. He must walk into the Royal Court, kneel before the King, and swear fealty in person."

Leo frowned instantly.

Go to the Capital? Absolutely not. He was way to weak with no backing to even try that.

The Capital would be crawling with Royal Knights, High Mages, and nobles who might hate him with private armies of assassins.

Walking into the capital was the same as swimming with the sharks while bleeding. It was basically suicide.

But a Royal decree cannot be challenged. He needed an absolute banger of an excuse, and he needed it fast.

"I can’t go to the Capital," Leo said flatly.

"Oh?" Aris asked, "And why is that?"

"The monster raid," Leo started, waving his hand vaguely, "The town is still vulnerable."

"If another wave hits, the town and I am not here, this town will fall without me."

"Plus, I am still weak from all the fighting with those Devil Mask assassins."

"You saw that, didn’t yo?"

"So I hope you can put in a few words for me, and..."

It was all a blatant and lazy at making an excuse.

Remus looked horrified that Leo would dare disobey the Royal Envoy so casually.

But Aris didn’t get angry. Instead, a genuine smile broke across the Inquisitor’s face.

"I thought you might say that," Aris chuckled softly.
