Chapter 60: Vampire?

Axel lay still on the infirmary bed, staring at the white ceiling above him. The word month kept echoing in his head, refusing to settle.

Unbeknownst to him and Aurora, the world outside that room had kept moving. Classes resumed. Rumors spread and decisions were made in closed rooms by people who had power and time to twist events into whatever shape suited them best.

After Axel’s unconventional victory against Luke Fern, the second-years had refused to call it a clean win. Drax Tan, in particular, had been quick to act.

From his perspective, a first-year Lumina defeating an Apex Firestarter made no sense. It went against the hierarchy and against the rules that kept the academy functioning. Against everything they believed about strength and order.

So Drax had labeled it what he thought it must be. A use of an Overdrive Serum.

ODS abuse had always been a convenient explanation. It fit the story. A reckless first-year, desperate enough to cheat, burning himself out for a single impossible victory. It would have justified punishment.

But the problem was simple, when the medics scanned Axel’s body, there was nothing. No residue or degradation patterns typical of ODS users. His blood was clean.

The final conclusion was released quietly that Axel’s mutated genes had entered a berserk state.

It wasn’t unheard of. When a mutation lost balance under extreme stress, the body sometimes reacted violently. Energy overflow. Temporary madness. Loss of control. Afterward, most users fell into a coma. A day. Sometimes two, rarely longer. So automatically, Axel won fair and square

Axel slept for a month. No one knew why.

While he remained unconscious in the infirmary, two people never stopped coming. Ares and Rick.

The healer stood beside Axel’s bed, tablet in hand, her expression professional but cautious.

"You’ve been unconscious for a month," she repeated, as if saying it twice might make it easier to accept. From her tone, it was clear she had already seen shock like his before.

"Your body is stable, but that doesn’t mean you’re cleared."

"There are still tests that need to be run," she continued. "Your mutation behaved abnormally. We need to make sure there are no delayed side effects."

Then the nurse glanced at the door.

"Oh," she added, as if remembering something. "You have a visitor."

Axel blinked. "A visitor?"

"Yes. She’s been coming quite often," the nurse said. "Almost every other day."

"She? Last time I checked, I was very single."

As the nurse turned and walked toward the door, Axel’s mind raced.

’A girl?’ he thought. ’Who?’

"Maybe you have a secret admirer..." Aurora teased

Before Axel could respond, the door slid open.

Kinsey Kit walked in.

"Oh... it’s her..."

Axel frowned slightly as he watched the girl walk inside

She smiled and nodded politely at the healer. "Thank you."

The nurse gave Axel one last look before stepping out and closing the door behind her, leaving the two of them alone.

She smiled at him. "You’re finally awake."

"What are you doing here? And... why have you been visiting me?"

He wasn’t accusing her. He was genuinely confused. Kinsey pulled a chair closer and sat down beside the bed, crossing one leg over the other.

"I wanted to see when you’d wake up," she said.

"That doesn’t explain why," Axel replied.

Inside his head, Aurora nudged him again. "Let her talk!" she urged. "People reveal more when they think they’re in control."

She leaned back in the chair. "Fine. I’ll start from the beginning."

"I’ve been watching you," Kinsey said.

"Since when?

"Since you defeated me in the testing," she answered plainly.

Axel blinked. "What? Why? That was just a test."

"No," Kinsey corrected. "That was impossible."

"A person without an awakened ability does not overpower me with raw strength," she said. "That doesn’t happen!"

Axel opened his mouth, then closed it again.

"That day," Kinsey continued, "I started paying attention to you and one time, I saw you use that that red energy. I didn’t understand it at first. But I knew it wasn’t normal."

"What do you mean it wasn’t normal? Drop the damn conspiracy theorist persona. Many people have weird abilities."

"That wasn’t an ability and you know it!" Then there was the alley behind the second year block. The night Dane Cornwall died," she said calmly.

"So it was really you. You stole my damn sword. Why?"

"I didn’t steal your sword. You lost it and I found it. Finder’s keeper’s," she said with a smirk.

Axel frowned as his confusion quickly turned into irritation.

"Why did you take it?"

"I fancied it," she said. "That’s the honest reason."

"That’s it?" he asked.

She nodded. "It didn’t look like a normal Mythic weapon. It felt... different. Like it didn’t belong to this place."

"But that’s not the only reason," Kinsey added.

"Then say the rest."

She smiled faintly, not teasing, not mocking. It was almost gentle.

"I heard you talking to that really cute girl earlier that day," she said. "About upgrading a weapon. You didn’t have the CNT for it."

"So you upgraded it," Axel said slowly, realization setting in. "You took my sword... and upgraded it."

"Yes."

"Why would you do that?"

Kinsey met his eyes. "Because you were going to do it anyway. You just couldn’t afford it yet."

"Then why give it back during the fight?" Axel asked. "Why not keep it?"

"Because it was never mine, just... borrowed it."

"Think of it as a gift," Kinsey continued. "But not a free one."

"What does that mean?"

"It means," she said calmly, "you should at least hear what I have to say before you decide how you feel about it."

"Where is the sword anyways?" Axel asked glancing around his bed. It wasn’t there.

"It’s safe...with me." Kinsey said. After the fight, I took it. No one stopped me, of course, considering I gave it to you in the first place. You’ll get it back once you hear what I have to say..."

Axel hesitated. His instincts told him to be cautious about this girl who had been spying on him, but at the same time, he wanted his sword back.

"Fine," he said. "Talk."

"I saw you erase your friend’s memory after he saw what you were and I saw a body disappear. How did you do it?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"I saw you! Don’t lie. I know what you are and it’s not human. There’s only one thing I know can erase someone’s mind like that!"

"Which is?"

"You’re a vampire. Aren’t you, Axel?"
