Infernal Entity: Evolving With My Demonic System-Chapter 64: Greed
The Fern family wasn’t a small name, and people were well aware of how much power it carried. Any situation involving a member of the Fern family was a big deal in most places, and as such, Axel’s actions in challenging one of them sparked widespread reactions.
It came as no surprise that Axel became even more popular after successfully defeating a pyrokinetic.
The next few days were strange for him. Wherever Axel went, heads turned, voices dropped into whispers, and sometimes people even approached him, hoping to befriend him.
"Hey, bud!" a male student called out one day after lunch. "I heard you woke up. How are you feeling?" the boy asked with a light smile.
Other times, it was good-looking girls going out of their way to get his attention. Not that their looks mattered much to Axel.
Getting approached by girls was a completely new experience for Axel Vaelon. Despite being good-looking, he was still a bit of a weirdo at heart.
"Axel, right?" a brunette Spectra One asked, stepping a little closer than necessary. Her uniform jacket was unzipped, revealing her blouse beneath. She leaned forward slightly as she spoke, her movements deliberate and confident, clearly aware of the effect she was trying to have.
"I was wondering if you’d like to spar with me tomorrow. Maybe you could show me a few tricks?"
"Uhm—" Axel stammered, struggling to maintain eye contact. Inside his head, Aurora mocked him with subtle jabs.
Fortunately, Axel wasn’t alone during most of these encounters. Rick and Ares were almost always nearby, making sure to scare people off in the most iconic ways possible.
"See, my friend here is an odd specimen," Ares said to the brunette with a smirk. "Sometimes, he wishes he was a horse so he could be ridden—just not by girls... if you know what I mean."
Whatever he meant seemed to completely turn her off, successfully warding her away.
Aside from that, Axel also spent time with Kinsey. She was the only person who knew what he truly was, and the only one who seemed capable of helping him. They often had lunch together, with Kinsey asking all sorts of questions about demons that Axel himself had no answers to.
Most of their conversations centered on when Axel planned to start his journey toward becoming a stable Demon Imp. Kinsey couldn’t understand why he was choosing to do nothing about it yet. What she didn’t realize was that Axel’s system had instructed him to await further instructions.
Waiting was his only option at the moment, considering everything he had done so far was system-driven. Luckily, Kinsey didn’t push him too hard on the topic, probably because she had already offered to help him with his tasks, including lust.
Axel was skinny but good-looking, she had already established that in her mind. Still, whether she was truly willing to help him satisfy that urge was another matter entirely. Most of the time, she avoided the sensitive topic altogether.
"Can I offer some insight, my dear host?" Aurora said. "You need to start working your way toward your lust. You wouldn’t simply walk up to a female and demand that she lie with you. It isn’t conventional. You must groom the situation and prepare yourself for when the time comes."
"Easier said than done..." Axel muttered as he took a large bite of meat.
Kinsey, who sat across from him in the cafeteria, raised her head. "What did you say?"
"Oh—no, I was uh..."
"Right, right. The voice in your head," she said quickly. "Got it."
She returned to her food, then suddenly asked, "Why are you eating meat?"
Axel paused.
"Don’t you find it strange that you, a demon—" she whispered, glancing around, "—are eating meat?"
Thinking about it now, Axel realized she had a point. He wasn’t human anymore. His taste in food should have changed along with everything else about him. Yet food still tasted the same. He didn’t crave anything strange, no hunger for flesh or blood like the old books described.
He felt... normal. "Whatever fallacy people place on demons are certainly not true."
Regardless, Axel and Kinsey continued eating their lunch like nothing was wrong. Ares and Rick were over on the other side, discussing on how to awaken Rick’s ability before the Advancement Training that was coming up soon.
The Advancement trainning was a training designed to help mutant increase their strengths, speed and attack outputs. Without an active mutated gene, Rick wouldn’t be able to partake in it.
A little while later, while eating, Axel felt a sharp, stinging chill crawl up his spine. He paused mid-bite and frowned. At first, he brushed it off, thinking it was just his nerves. ’Probably acting up again...’ He thought.
"Hm... I do not believe so," Aurora whispered.
Then it came, this time, he felt a strange hunger for something unknown stirr deep inside him.
It wasn’t the kind that made his stomach growl. This hunger had nothing to do with food. It felt heavier and sharper. It pulled at something inside his chest, spreading slowly, urging him to take something... anything at all
Axel swallowed hard and set his fork down. Before he could speak, the familiar blue screen flickered into existence in front of him.
< [Ding!] >
< [Demonic urge detected: Greed] >
< [Sinful need acknowledged] >
< [Objective assigned] >
< [Mission: in order to satisfy your greed, you must accumulate 100,000 CNT] >
Axel’s eyes widened with shock as he read the message
< [Time limit: 30 days] >
< [Failure will result in severe penalties] >
The screen faded just as quickly as it appeared.
Axel sat there, frozen, his appetite completely gone.
"One hundred thousand CNT!" He blurted out
"In one month..." Aurora finished.
The weight of it finally sank in, and his chest tightened. This wasn’t just about getting stronger anymore. This wasn’t optional. His system wasn’t asking, it was demanding. His journey to earn money had just turned serious.
And the worst part?
He had no idea where to even begin.
