Chapter 29: Misunderstanding

Roselle’s eyes widened. She looked around, scanning the trees and shadows.

Then a smile spread across her face. Her eyes began glowing a soft pink.

"As expected of the Lord," she said. "Even I was fooled."

Her expression then turned cold and serious.

"Lowly lifeforms," she called out, her voice cutting through the forest. "Show yourselves."

A few meters ahead, the seemingly empty clearing flickered. The air rippled like disturbed water, and the illusion shattered - revealing three figures.

At the front stood a muscular man with short dark hair, clad in full armor. He held a massive shield before him, positioned protectively. Behind him crouched two women.

One was on the shorter end, with bright red hair and slightly pointed ears. She wore a dark cloak and a witch’s hat that seemed too large for her head. In her hands, she gripped a mage staff taller than herself.

The other woman was of average height, with long white hair that cascaded down to her waist. A see-through veil covered the bottom half of her face, and her robes marked her as someone of the cloth.

"Damn it, Garen!" the short mage hissed, smacking the large man’s armored back. "You said your concealment was perfect! How the hell did they find us?!"

"I...it was perfect!" the tank defended. "There’s no way anyone should have been able to..."

"Then explain this!"

"Maybe they have some kind of special detection..."

"Excuses! That’s all you ever have!"

"Now, now," the white-haired woman raised her hands placatingly, a nervous smile on her face. "Let’s all calm down. Fighting amongst ourselves won’t help..."

"Stay out of this, Seria!"

"But..."

Internally, Seria was panicking.

She looked at the figures before them - specifically at the pink-haired woman with rabbit ears whose eyes were glowing ominously.

Of all the people to encounter in this forest...

It was commonly known that there were three people one must never encounter in the Beast Forest if they wanted to live.

One was the Orc King.

Second was the Goblin Shaman.

And the most dangerous of all - the Demon Princess of the Rabbit Beast Tribe.

It was said that she held the most hatred toward humans. Meeting her was practically guaranteed death.

How are we supposed to get out of this?

"...are you even listening to me?!"

"I told you, it wasn’t my fault!"

"Then whose fault was it?! The trees?!"

"Maybe if you hadn’t been breathing so loudly..."

"Excuse me?!"

Roselle’s face twitched.

They were ignoring her.

Suddenly, her aura erupted.

The ground beneath her feet cracked. Debris began floating upward, swirling around her as waves of pressure radiated outward.

Lunaris looked at her in horror.

"Hey, Roselle, why don’t you..."

Before he could finish, she roared.

"How dare you lowly humans ignore me! Making such an unsightly display before the Moon!"

Her claws extended, gleaming in the light.

"By the rules of the Church of the Eternal Moon, I hereby sentence you to death!"

Lunaris blinked. "Is there such a rule?"

"Yes," Roselle answered, already charging forward. "I just made it."

Lunaris was left standing there, at a loss for words.

He turned his attention to the group. Well, they had been watching in secret, so they definitely weren’t good people.

Still, it would be best if Roselle didn’t go too far.

"Roselle, wait!" he called out, rushing after her.

The human group instantly stopped their bickering. Their expressions turned serious as they noticed the incoming threat.

"Scatter!" the large man shouted.

He planted his feet and pressed his weight onto his shield, bracing for impact.

Roselle’s fist crashed into the shield.

The impact was devastating.

The man went flying - shield and all - crashing through the air before slamming into a tree with a thunderous crack.

He groaned, forcing himself back up on shaking legs.

The two mages had scattered to opposite sides, creating distance.

Roselle now stood in the middle of the trio.

She looked around with a smug smile.

"Just a beginner group," she mocked. "The tank dares to separate himself from the mage and healer? And you don’t even have a warrior?" She clicked her tongue. "What a sorry excuse for a party."

The tank laughed weakly, spitting blood. "You think so?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Roselle paused.

Then she turned around.

No way.

Her eyes met the smug face of the red-haired mage. The girl had her staff outstretched - not toward Roselle, but toward Lunaris.

A flame gathered at the tip, growing larger by the second.

"You also left your comrade," the mage said with a grin.

Roselle’s expression twisted. She charged toward the mage instantly.

But the girl gestured with her other hand.

’Earth, protect me’

The earth rumbled, and a massive stone wall erupted from the ground, blocking Roselle’s path.

Dual elements? And dual casting?

Roselle was taken aback - but only for a moment. She recomposed herself and punched straight through the wall. Stone shattered and scattered like dust.

"Too late," the mage said.

A streak of flame left her staff, rocketing toward Lunaris.

Roselle’s eyes tracked the magic with growing panic.

No...the Lord is currently injured. *He might not be able to...

I need to...

Suddenly, Lunaris extended his hand.

The flame magic heading toward him simply... vanished.

Gone without a trace.

"What?!" the mage exclaimed, her eyes wide with shock.

Then she realized Roselle was already before her.

"Uh..." The mage’s confident expression crumbled. "Is it possible to start over?"

Roselle just smiled.

The mage saw darkness.

Roselle held the unconscious girl by the collar, examining her limp form.

The humans are getting stronger, she thought. I should get rid of this one before she grows to be a problem.

"Princess, please wait!"

A voice cut through.

Roselle looked back to see the white-haired woman approaching slowly, the injured tank leaning heavily on her shoulder.

"Oh," Roselle said flatly. "I forgot there were still more of you pesky creatures."

Seria raised her free hand in a peaceful gesture. "We mean no harm."

"Oh really?" Roselle’s eyes narrowed. "Then why did you try to attack us?"

The woman’s lips twitched.

Well, technically, you attacked us first.

But there was no way she could say that.

"It’s just a misunderstanding," she said carefully.

"A misunderstanding, you say?"

Roselle’s aura began intensifying again.

...

Author’s Corner

"No...the Lord is currently injured. *He might not be able to..."

Roselle uses she/her pronouns for Lunaris since the original moon goddess was female. But it’s too confusing and honestly I don’t want to bother. A god doesn’t even have a gender anyway.

Anyway, we meet again in a new novel (or for the first time) the upload has been messed up as of late but me try my best ❤️
