Infinite Adaptation: Starting As A Level 1 Slime-Chapter 60: Beast Nation [PART 1]
"I am partly at fault. I went unconscious and could not give you any follow up orders so it’s only natural that you’d get restless."
Mira’s head snapped up.
"Unconscious?"
Concern flooded her features.
"Is the Lord unwell? Who dares attack the Lord?!"
Her eyes sharpened with killing intent.
"The Lord need only say the word and I will go annihilate their nine generations."
Lunaris blinked.
Just a moment ago I was thinking how she was a sweet and capable girl.
Now she’s talking about annihilating nine generations?
He waved his hand dismissively.
"It’s just a small matter. I encountered an accident while practicing my magic. No one attacked me."
Mira relaxed slightly, though the concern didn’t fully leave her eyes.
Lunaris’s expression grew more serious. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
"That said, what you did this time was dangerous."
He looked at her firmly.
"I will let it slide this once. But next time, do not do such reckless things."
He paused.
"Do you want me to lose my most capable subordinate?"
Mira looked up at him.
Her eyes sparkled.
Lunaris was a little taken aback.
Was I being too pretentious just now?
Acting like some grand ruler...
Mira clasped her hands together and lowered her head.
"This servant does not dare."
But internally...
I’m my Lord’s most capable subordinate?
A warm feeling spread through her chest.
Lunaris moved on.
"Did you get anything good from your trip?"
Mira nodded.
"I did, my Lord. I gathered quite a bit of..."
They both paused.
Their heads turned simultaneously toward the cathedral entrance.
Footsteps. Many of them. Approaching rapidly.
Lunaris glanced back at Mira.
"You did well. Go rest for now."
He met her eyes.
"I will have a talk with you later."
Mira pressed her fist to her chest.
"As the Lord commands."
Her form rippled - and she sank into the shadows beneath her, vanishing without a trace.
...
The cathedral doors opened.
People began streaming in.
Beastmen of all kinds filled the vast space - orcs, goblins, rabbit beastmen. They gathered before the statue, murmuring amongst themselves.
"The Lord is calling everyone again."
"I wonder what it’s about this time."
"Every time the Lord addresses all of us, it’s always something good."
"I finally get to see the inside of the cathedral, I can die in peace."
"Is the lord going to give us another blessing?"
The crowd swelled until the main hall was packed.
Roselle stood at the front, having arrived with the others. The Orc King and Goblin Shaman took their places nearby, so did the head of Agriculture.
Finally, the murmuring died down.
All eyes turned to Lunaris.
He stood before the statue of the Eternal Moon, gazing out at the sea of faces looking up at him with reverence and anticipation.
He spoke.
"I have gathered you all here today for one reason."
His voice carried effortlessly through the vast space.
"To tell you what we are going to do going forward."
...
One month later.
The city bustled with life.
Well-built houses lined the streets, their roofs sturdy and walls painted in warm earthen tones. Shops displayed their wares through clean glass windows. Stalls crowded the marketplaces, vendors calling out to passersby.
The scent of fresh bread drifted from a bakery. The clang of metal rang out from a blacksmith’s forge. Laughter echoed from a tavern where off-duty workers gathered for midday drinks.
And everywhere - beastmen.
Orcs haggled with goblin merchants. Wolf tribesmen carried lumber on their shoulders. Rabbit beastmen darted between stalls, inspecting vegetables and fruits. A group of cat-eared women compared fabrics at a tailor’s shop.
In the middle of a wide street, children played.
A young fox girl chased after a goblin boy. A pair of wolf pups wrestled on the cobblestones. An orc child laughed as she kicked a ball toward her friends.
The sound of wheels against stone grew louder.
A carriage approached, pulled by two massive wolves. Their fur was sleek and gray, their muscles rippling with each stride.
The coachman sat at the front, reins in hand, guiding the beasts through the busy street.
"Make way! Make way!"
The children scattered to the sides.
All except one.
A small rabbit girl stood frozen in the middle of the road, her eyes wide with terror. The ball she had been chasing rolled past her feet.
The coachman’s face went pale.
"No!"
He pulled on the reins with all his strength. The wolves snarled, digging their paws into the ground.
But the momentum was too great.
The carriage continued forward.
It was too late.
The girl squeezed her eyes shut...
And nothing happened.
She opened her eyes slowly.
A man stood beside her.
He was beautiful in a way that seemed almost unreal. Long silver hair cascaded down his back. His features were refined, elegant. He wore well-tailored clothes that spoke of status without being ostentatious.
The carriage behind him was frozen mid-motion. The wolves hung in the air, their paws lifted off the ground. The coachman’s terrified expression was locked in place.
It was as though time itself had stopped.
The newcomer placed a gentle hand on her head.
"Are you okay?"
His voice was warm.
The girl nodded shakily.
He smiled softly.
"Be more careful next time."
She nodded again, more vigorously.
The wolves stumbled as their momentum suddenly returned, the coachman nearly falling from his seat as the carriage lurched to a halt.
"What...what just..."
The carriage door flew open.
A large-bellied goblin in expensive silk robes stumbled out, his face flushed with panic.
"Is the child hurt?! What happened?!"
He rushed toward the girl, his attendants following close behind.
"Are you alright, little one? Are you..."
He noticed the man standing beside her.
The goblin’s words died in his throat.
The newcomer raised his hands, about to speak...
But before he could get a word in, the goblin dropped to his knees instantly.
"This one greets Lord Lunaris!"
The coachman’s eyes bulged. He scrambled down from his seat and prostrated himself on the ground.
"We greet Lord Lunaris!"
Lunaris facepalmed.
Oh no.
Heads turned all around.
"Lunaris?"
"Did someone say Lord Lunaris?"
"Did you hear that? Lord Lunaris is here!"
"Where?! Move aside, I want to see the Lord!"
"If the Lord looks at my shop, my family will prosper for generations!"
"Move aside!"
Within seconds, the entire street was chaos.
Bodies pressed against bodies. Beastmen of all kinds pushed and shoved, craning their necks to catch a glimpse of their Lord.
"Lord Lunaris!"
"Please bless my family!"
"Over here, my Lord!"
