"What’s the matter? Scared that now I have achieved some status, I will throw you to the side?" he asked with a playful smile.

Bai Ruyi froze despite herself, never expecting to be read so easily and so perfectly by someone else. Of course, she recovered quickly and put on a flirtatious smile, chuckling softly. "Indeed, having such a handsome husband is really terrifying for me. All these exemplary women want you, and who knows when you might abandon me?"

Li Ling didn’t play along with her at all. "Blame yourself. Your idiot protector kept acting hostile to me, and the two of you utilized your advantageous position to force me into an oath and a sham marriage. Now that I am in an advantageous position, I should have long found ways to nullify the oath and kill you, not keep you."

Bai Ruyi paused and then stopped the act after a good second, her smile remaining on her face though it possessed no real mirth. It was a look similar to what Li Ling himself often gave, though both did not notice it.

"Indeed, but you’re forgetting one thing, Li Ling. From the moment I attained the advantage over you, there were countless choices I could have made with you. The oath could have been worse or multifold, we could have enslaved you using special drugs or Daoist Arts, like the carriers of my palanquin back then."

Bai Ruyi tilted her head slightly. "However, I didn’t because I wanted to maintain a good relationship between us when you inevitably began to rise. Caging you foolishly would not only hinder your destiny, which is supposed to benefit me too, but also breed intense resentment."

She then shrugged hopelessly. "I even helped you gain an advantage again and sacrificed my good sister of the sect to let you escape and arrive here on your own terms."

Li Ling’s smile faded into one of thoughtfulness. He then took a step forward and placed a hand on Bai Ruyi’s cheek with a gentle caress, his eyes softening greatly as he looked at her directly.

"Ruyi, you have truly suffered. It is true that you have thought about me to a great extent, and I should even be grateful rather than resentful..." Li Ling began, making Bai Ruyi’s eyes light up, but his hand on her face suddenly moved to grip her jaw tightly, pulling her closer.

"...But understand that I don’t care. I don’t care if you are here to harm me or to save me, or if you have harmed me or have saved me. Bai Ruyi felt a hint of pain as Li Ling’s grip was tight, but she didn’t pay attention to that at all. Rather, her body trembled with excitement as she shed a tear from her eye, feeling that she had finally seen it!
