"Dad, but this does not explain why exactly Michael has some resentment towards the Santos family, especially you.
Are you sure that this is all that there is to this story?" Henry asked skeptically.
With furrowed brows, Newton looked at his son as he asked, "Kid, what do you take your father for? Do you think that I can sacrifice my own family for no reason at all?
Let me tell you, from the start, Zachary had no intention of getting himself involved in the family business. As for me, even though I had the interest, it was not enough to be able to make me to kill my own brother.
Even if I was obsessed with the family business, Zachary had already left for several years. And, he was staying in a very small city, nobody knowing about where he was.
So, why would I want to kill him, when he obviously is not a threat at all to the position of the head of the family?
So, I don’t really understand why Michael has resentment towards me. But most probably, it might be that he already knows about the fact that I knew of his existence.
And more than that, despite me knowing about the fact that both his parents had died, I left him there to suffer. Maybe, he thinks that the Santos family acts like this. That might be the reason why he is unwilling to come back.
And considering what he has managed to make of himself, it is clear that he doesn’t need to depend on the Santos family in order to be able to survive."
"Then, what do you suggest we do?" At this point, Henry could only believe part of what Newton had said. After all, it made sense.
But of course, he could not fully believe this. What if this was just a story that Newton had made up to fool him?
So, he decided, for the time being, he would not inform his grandpa of this matter. After all, if it ended up affecting the old man, things would get much more complicated.
Instead, he thought, he would continue investigating. And, he would have to pay Michael another visit, in order to be able to understand why Michael resented the Santos family.
If it was true that his father was involved with Zachary’s death, at least, Michael had to make it clear. If possible, he should provide evidence as well. That way, at least, Henry would be able to know what to do next.
"For the time being, we cannot allow the old man to know about that kid’s existence. After all, the moment that we let the old man know about that kid, he would definitely want to meet him.
At that time, it would be inevitable that he would be able to learn that Zachary passed away. At that time, if that kid refuses to come back to the Santos family, and we lose the old man, things would get completely out of hand.
While I usually handle most of the things within the family, the old man actually is very crucial. If anything happens to him, this entire family could easily collapse, especially with the pressure from the Blood Reapers syndicate." Newton explained.
Henry thought about it, and nodded. It was alone what he was thinking about. For now, we had to continue the investigation. And only when he could convince Michael to come back to the family, only then would he allow the old man to know about Michael’s existence.
With the two of them coming to an agreement, Henry decided to leave. But before he could do that, Newton stopped him.
"And by the way, let me warn you about something. You better be careful about what you do. First of all, you are not supposed to be going around recklessly.
If you end up letting the old man know about the situation, at least for now, I will deal with you personally.
On the other hand, you have to be careful when you go out, even within this city. The Blood Reapers are getting more bold every single day. So, it might not be much of a surprise if they suddenly make a move on you or any other family member." Newton gave a reminder.
Hearing this, Henry’s expression became solemn. He nodded, understanding how important this was. If Henry was affected, the entire family would.
After all, currently, of the same generation, Henry was the best candidate to inherit the position of the next leader of the family.
When the old man finally began his retirement, Henry would be required to be the second in command under Newton. That way, he would be able to learn many things, and when Newton wanted to retire, Henry would officially take over.
Additionally, if Henry was used as a hostage, the silent order syndicate under the Santos family might end up being greatly implicated. So, thinking about this, Henry decided to be more cautious.
And with that, he left the study, leaving behind Newton who was deep in thought.
....
"Kate, what do you think about the combat assessment that will start on 1st of next month? Are you confident?" Lina asked Kate was standing next to her.
They were in the same training ground, having completed the evening training, and were taking a break before they continued with the final drills of the date.
"I’m not really sure about how the others will perform. After all, physical capabilities does not fully demonstrate someone’s combat capabilities.
There are skills that cannot be demonstrated during the physical training, and there is also experience. So, unless we fight, it is almost impossible to be able to be sure who will come out at the top." Kate shook her head as she responded.
Even though she had been practicing since she was young, she understood that there were those out there who were more skilled than her.
A good example of that was Michael. He was not much older than her, but his skills were on a very high level. It was not just the skills, but the strength as well.
If the two of them faced off, Kate was sure that she stood no chance against Michael. She was not even sure how he trained to be able to become so strong.
As for talent, she did not even think about that. If it was because of talent that Michael was that strong, then what about his driving skills? Then his marksmanship?
No matter how much she thought about it, she believed that there was more to Michael’s skills. As for what exactly it was, she had no clue.
And as she thought of Michael, a faint smile appeared on her lips. It had been quite a while since the two of them had talked.
Apart from that day that she had contacted him, they had not been allowed to make contact again. They were told that after the combat assessment, they would be given another break, by which she would be able to communicate with Michael.
Thinking about hearing his voice and seeing him again, she felt her heart race a bit. And the yearning in her heart increased, and so was her determination. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Lina who was standing next to Kate, observed her reaction, and could not help but smile slightly. Still, she said, "Well, I don’t really know how skilled the others are. But I can guarantee that I will be taking the first place in the combat assessment test."
Kate, coming back to her senses, looked at Lina, and she could not help but shake her head slightly. She felt that Lina was being too overconfident.
She had to admit, in terms of physical fitness, Lina was the best of the entire lot. But, combat was not just all about physical fitness.
You might be strong, but if you did not know how to use your strength to your advantage, it would be very easy for someone weaker to be able to win.
Despite what she was thinking, Kate decided not to discourage her. Instead, she said, "Okay then, I will be looking forward to that. But, be careful, otherwise, if you end up being caught off guard and lose to someone, maybe me, you will have no one to blame."
"Hmm, it seems that our Kate here has already began building up her confidence. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing your skills. I just hope that you don’t get eliminated before we clash." Lina responded with a mischievous smile appearing on her lips.
Kate simply shook her head at that, but still, she smiled back at Lina. The relationship between the two of them had gotten even better, despite the two of them interacting for just about a month.
The two of them were silent for quite a while, observing the others who were in small groups, also taking this chance to rest.
Suddenly, as though she was thinking of something, Lina gazed at Kate and asked in a low voice, "Recently, I heard some rumors that I believe would interest you."
"Huh? What rumors?" Kate asked in a confused voice. She did not believe that there was any rumor that would interest her within this training camp. Still, she was curious about what Lina had to say.
"It is about the guy that we beat up the other time. I just heard that he would also be there during the combat assessment. So, since he was interested in you, I thought that I should let you know about this, so that you can prepare in advance, not to get too surprised when you see him." Lina stated.
