Interstellar Beastworld: Raising A Cub With My Mummy System!-Chapter 64
Lin Yue nodded slowly. "Why did you not go to Uriel?"
Mira laughed, a sad, dry sound. "His Majesty was never here. He came once a year, sometimes less. When he was here, he was busy with military matters, with the council. I could not get five minutes alone with him."
She picked up her cup again.
"I hoped someone would come. Someone who was not afraid. Someone who would ask the right questions. And you did."
Lin Yue shook her head, she couldn’t accept the credit given. After all, if it wasn’t her mission to catch the culprit, or the reward that came with it.
She would never have placed so much effort.
She wasn’t that good of a person.
Still she was glad Mira wasn’t hurt or fired in the process.
"Uriel promised to compensate you all. You’ll get your back pay soon."
Mira smiled and patted Lin Yue’s hands. "You’re a lovely girl, madam. Thank you."
Lin Yue smiled and nodded, she looked around and noticed Mira was the only one present.
"Where’s the others?"
Mira shook her head, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"I’m afraid, Lilia and Elara were killed madam while the others were fired. It’s just me now, it reminds me of the day I got hired, now thirty years later it’s just me again."
Lin Yue nodded taking notice of it, it seems they—no she would need to hire new people.
They first had to make a list of who was fired and who was still left.
"Mira. I have a task for you, can you make a list of the vacant roles, as well those who were fired and deceased. So I can know which job roles are left open."
Mira nodded and pointed to the tablet on the kitchen wall.
"There’s no need for me to do that madam. You can just check the tablet over there, if you can see the employment list there, if there’s any vacant spot it will show there."
Lin Yue looked at the tablet.
The vacant roles were already highlighted.
She counted them under her breath.
Kitchen assistants, housekeepers, maids, groundskeepers, a new quartermaster.
Too many empty spots for a house this size.
She turned back to Mira. "Sixteen people left. That is not enough."
Mira nodded. "I know, Madam. But hiring will take time."
Lin Yue stroked her chin, to fill this spot they would have to go out and search for their workers themselves.
She used her free hand to bring out her phone and send Uriel a text message.
{You better be home before dinner. I have something I want to discuss with you, also free up your schedule for tomorrow. We’re going out}
Uriel received the message, mid combat.
He sent his sparring partner flying with a kick while he checked his message.
After reading it, he decided to give Lin Yue a call.
She answered almost immediately.
"What are you doing?" she asked. "It’s loud there."
"Just having a match with the newbies." He was breathing hard, sweat dripping down his face.
The training grounds were packed.
Soldiers shouting, boots stomping, weapons clashing.
Lin Yue could barely hear him. "You’re sweating a lot."
"I said I’m having a match!"
"I can’t hear you!"
He pulled the phone away from his ear, took a breath, and roared. "Hey! Can’t y’all see I’m talking to my wife? Close your damn mouths!"
The place went silent in an instant.
Soldiers freezing mid-swing.
The only sound was the wind and Uriel’s heavy breathing.
He put the phone back to his ear. "Better?"
Lin Yue laughed. "Much."
"Why do you need me to clear my schedule for tomorrow?"
"We’re going worker hunting. The house is short-staffed. Only sixteen people left. Mira can’t run everything alone."
Uriel wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. "Alright. I’ll clear it."
"Good. Now go finish your match. And try not to hurt anyone too badly."
He snorted. "No promises."
But before he could hang up, Lin Yue added, "Oh, and Uriel? Auriel wants to say hi."
She tapped her phone, and the hologram bloomed into the air above the training ground.
The soldiers gasped as the 360-degree image of the nursery appeared, Auriel laying in his bassinet, his platinum curls glowing, his gold eyes blinking sleepily. He let out a soft coo, eh-eh-eh, and kicked his little legs.
Uriel’s face softened.
He crouched down, bringing his phone closer to the ground so more of his men could see. "There he is. That’s my son."
The soldiers pressed forward, craning their necks. A young recruit whispered, "He’s so small, sir."
Another soldier wiped his eyes. "He’s got your ears, Commander."
"He’s perfect."
"He’s going to be trouble, just like his old man."
Uriel laughed.
A real laugh, not the tight-lipped version. He looked at his men, then back at the hologram.
"Alright, alright. Enough. You’ll meet him properly when he’s a little older."
The soldiers cheered.
Two thousand voices, roaring across the training ground.
He stood and cleared his throat. "Back to training. Anyone who breaks formation runs laps until dawn."
They scrambled back into position, but they were still grinning.
He turned back to the phone. "I’ll be home soon."
Lin Yue smiled. "I’ll be waiting."
Uriel ended the call, he held his smile for a few seconds then returned to his resting bitch face.
"Who’s next? Don’t think just because I got off the phone with my wife and son that I’ll go easy on you. There’s war approaching, to protect your friends and loved ones you must break past 100% be at your very best, only then can you protect the ones you love. The Zephorians have poisons, toxins so strong it could kill a grown man within seconds. We veterans who fought in the last war understand that, we endure so you newbies could get an antidote, a way out. I can stand before you today and say we have nothing to fear when it comes to the Zephorian poison."
Uriel’s pep talk seemed to have boosted their morale as they cheered.
"This war is ours to win!"
"The war is ours to win!"
"We will gladly lay down our lives for you commander!"
"Long life his Majesty!"
While the men knocked heads with one another, Magus appeared with more bad news.
"I’m afraid there’s more bad news. Let’s find a quieter place to talk about this. We may need to re-strategize after you hear this."
[Song rec: Experience, 2013]
Uriel’s jaw tightened.
He followed Magus off the training ground, past the rows of cheering soldiers, into the shadow of the command center.
Magus stopped, he stood there, his hands clasped behind his back, his face pale.
"Speak," Uriel said.
