BOOM!

"Holy crap, that hurts!"

When Kidanna and her entourage entered the [Nest of Glass Beasts], she figured that the most dangerous thing she’d be fighting were either going to be actual Glass Beasts or the statues suddenly coming to life and trying to kill her.

She wasn’t wrong in making that prediction per say, as she and her men had to indeed fight off a whole bunch of living glass animals statues. However, she didn’t account for the fact that she and her men were going to have to fight a bunch of opportunistic mercenaries immediately after they had cleared the "nest" and claim the aether treasure inside, a tiny glass statue of a phoenix that seemed to radiate healing powers.

To be more precise about these mercenaries though, she recognized them as being regular hires for the Silver Jungle Dragon Shipping Company. As such, she and her men were more than happy to lay the smackdown on these fuckers for trying to steal from them.

However...

"This bitch is way too strong!"

"We gotta retreat, now!"

"Wait, what?"

None of the Goldenback warriors were expecting the Silver-tongues to just up and run like a bunch of scared cats after only a few blows had been exchanged between them.

Usually, when the Goldenbacks and the Silver-tongues locked blades in the [City of Mirrors], it would end in total annihilation for one side or the other.

Death before dishonor and all that.

The fact that these warriors affiliated with the Silver-tongues suddenly retreated after only one quick skirmish was...weird to the Goldenbacks.

So much so that they couldn’t help but feel cheated.

"Did...did those Silver-tongue assholes just run away after trying to ambush us?"

"I...I think they did. Yes."

"Huh. Why do I feel cheated even though we won?"

"Because we technically didn’t."

"Ah."

Needless to say though, the warrior who was most frustrated by this sudden cowardice was none other than Kidanna herself.

"Those slimy, scaly little-okay," Kidanna paused before taking a deep breath. "Alright men, I know that logic and reason dictate that we should probably take advantage of the fact that their ambush failed to regroup with the others and secure our gains...but I also know that a part of you lot probably wants to do nothing more than smash in the heads of those Silver-tongue motherfuckers, right?!"

"Right!"

"Yeah!"

"So, I’m going to ask for half of you to go back to the exit and secure our gains, while also asking the other half to come along with me to put the hurt on these cowardly fuckers," Kidanna declared as she began to walk in the direction those mercenaries had ran towards.

"Whomever wants blood, follow me."

"Yes!’

"As you wish, Boss Kidanna!"

Unfortunately, due to the sheer enthusiasm and rage the Goldenbacks were feeling in their souls, they didn’t realize the possibility that this was also a trap.

...Meanwhile, from the POV of the escaping warriors...

’As you instructed boss, we have managed to rile up the gorilla woman and are now on our way back to you. We should be at your location in about...five, maybe four minutes,’ a Silver-tongue mercenary reported back to Alfonzo via a communication type aether treasure.

’Excellent work, my friend, excellent work,’ Alfonzo praised. ’As promised, you’ll be given a fifty percent pay raise for luring them back to the fountain.’

’Thank you very kindly,’ the mercenary said with genuine gratitude. ’Did you want us to assist in the battle as well, or did you want us to leave it to you? It won’t cost you extra to have us help you fight.’

’No, no, it’s quite alright. I have faith in the Duke...and our plan...’

’What was that?’

’Nothing, nothing. Just make sure to get out of sight once you reach the target location,’ Alfonzo reminded the mercenary.

’Of course, boss. Of course.’

...Several minutes of high spirited chasing later...

"Alright, what the fuck?," Kidanna cursed as she and her group of volunteers arrived at a certain fountain plaza.

This plaza was not unknown to the Goldenbacks, as they had seen it marked on the map, but that didn’t stopped them from being confused at being at this location.

Especially since, after arriving to this plaza, the mercenaries finally decided to split off into random directions.

The moment this split occurred, the Goldenbacks immediately took up a defensive formation with their backs turned against each other in a circular manner.

They had been fighting the Silver-tongues for a long time, and they knew a trap when they saw one.

However...

"What’s taking those scaly bastards so long?"

"I don’t know."

"Maybe something happened and they’re being forced to do some last minute reorganizing?"

The longer it took for this trap to finally get sprung, the sooner the Goldenbacks realized something was wrong.

One minute passed, but nothing happened.

Then two minutes...

Then three...

"Alright, that’s enough being on our guards. At ease, gentlemen."

Until a solid seven minutes had passed with nothing happening that Goldenbacks finally let down their guard and realize that they had been brought on a wild goose chase.

Or...at least what they thought was a wild goose chase.

"Boss Kidanna, should we just regroup with the others and file this incident under ’Bullshit pranks done by the Silver-tongues to mess with us’?" one of the Goldenback warriors asked Kidanna.

"Boss?"

However, Kidanna wasn’t in the right headspace at the moment to listen. Instead, she was focused on one particular detail about the fountain plaza.

"Hey...why is this stone painted and sticking out of the ground out of lockstep with the rest of the pavement?," she asked the subordinate who had initially asked her a question.

"Huh? What are you—oh. Uh...maybe it’s just decorative?" The subordinate suggested.

"Hmmm."

If there were other stones similar to the one Kidanna was staring at, she would be inclined to believe her subordinate’s suggestion.

However, this was the only stone she saw that was one of its kind.

Like a single candle in a dark room, Kidanna couldn’t help but to stare and be curious of this colorful stone.

So much so that she did the only sensible thing she could think of in that moment.

Click

"Eh?"

She stepped on it.

Rumble, rumble, rumble, the rumbling sound of stone mechanisms being forced to move for the third time in two days, rumble.

"Oh...shit."

Before the eyes of Kidanna and all of her subordinate warriors, the fountain sank into the ground and opened up into a descending stairway that led to some underground chamber that none of the warriors present could peer into.

That stated, some of the Goldenbacks were deeply suspicious about this passageway for very obvious reasons.

"Wait...just sum up how we got here. We got goaded into a chase by mercenaries hired by the Silver-tongues, we chased them to this plaza, and because of a painted stone that caught the boss’s attention, we are now staring down into a stairway that leads to some hidden chamber that was originally a water feature. Right?"

"Yup."

"Yeah, this is clearly a trap."

However, there were some members of the entourage who weren’t as cautious, almost unnaturally so.

"Hey...you guys can sense that aura coming from down there, right?"

"Yeah, it’s...potent."

"That means there’s something good down there, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Let’s go and claim it for ourselves! Right now!"

"Huh? Hey, wait!"

Suddenly and without warning, several of the Goldenback warriors made a break for the staircase as a look of utter madness took over their eyes.

Making worse, when some of their colleagues attempted to stop them, these possessed madmen lashed out with near lethal force.

"What the fuck?!"

"What are you doing?!"

"The treasure is mine! Mine!" The mad men repeated in unnatural sounding voices.

"Alright, that’s enough of that!"

"Eh?"

But before these deviants could cause further mayhem, Kidanna acted and knocked all of them without a swing of her fist.

"Guh..."

With the mad men now stopped, Kidanna barked out new orders.

"Someone tie these guys up and drag them back to the exit for medical attention. The rest of you, stand here and guard the perimeter. I’m going in there and determining what caused my men to attack each other."

"As you wish, boss!"

"Wait, boss!" One of the subordinates that were still sane called out. "Are you sure this is a good idea? What if whatever down there intentionally caused this in order to goad you into action? This is clearly a trap!"

"I know very well this might be a trap," Kidanna replied. "But I’m the only one here with the power to break it if shit goes sideways. More importantly, whatever down there crossed a line. I refuse to allow anymore of my precious subordinates to needlessly suffer."

"Boss..."

"Just make sure nobody comes to interfere."

"...okay."

Following her orders, several of the warriors present that were at the Grandmaster level activated their [Regalia] and stood at the ready.

At the same time, as Kidanna entered the stairs, she activated both her own [Regalia] and her [Astra] as well.

"Alright, you bastards. Come at me!"
