Chapter 12 - Donnerwall

"Ha..Ha..Ha..." My breath came out in rugged gasps as I leaned against a tall tree in the forest, hiding the crescent moon behind its canopy. I escape into the small forest behind the estate of the Blitzfeld. Far away from the smell of embers, I started.

I opened my pouch and pulled a red vial out of it. Flicking open the lid, I gulped the whole potion down. The wound on my right shoulder which was bestowed upon me by my sister, started burning with a poking sensation as the wound slowly started to fade.

[Noah, I think you should hurry. They might dispatch a few knights to be sent after you.] Dante's advice cut through my head like a blade.

'I know' I steadied myself on my foot, 'And one thing, can you change your voice? The mechanical hum hurts my head'

[I thought... you liked it]

'No, I was simply too busy with planning and working out to remember it,' I admitted, likely upsetting this system of mine.

[Hah... Fine] Dante exasperated, [Is it good now?]

"What the fuck!?" I jumped alerted at the sudden change in his tone, it was now a deep male voice that soothing and intimidating at the same time.

'Hey Dante, are you really a system?' I asked, my voice dripped with curiosity. It was the first time I questioned Dante. He was strange after all, unlike someone who is supposed to know about the game. He does not know anything about what will happen to Noah.

Also, when I received my title of 'Masochist', the system window operated on its own, and through observing Dante's reaction even he was surprised upon seeing that. But it was a doubt creeping on me all the time that Dante and the system felt distant and not connected.

[System? What do you mean? I am just your guide] Dante said.

'Guide? So you were not the one controlling this blue window when I say "Stats"?'

[No I can't control it but I can see it, I also mimicked my voice with that thing you call 'system' so that you know I can give you the ANCIENT FEELS~] Dante said, his deep voice laced with a mischievous tone.

'So you did not follow me from Earth?'

[No... I was always with Noah, ever since he was born. I gave you his memories. But your soul merger? That was done by something—someone—far beyond even the Divines... and outside my control]

'Who are you really?' I asked.

[It's not the right time to tell you but you will know me soon~]

'You are just making fun of me, Dante' I said releasing a sigh. I was not getting anything from this guy who was Noah's supposed guide. I can just hope that this guy was not some evil entity and remembering Noah during the game, I don't think that he is one.

Leaving the questions behind, for now, I have to move. The sun was slowly rising on the horizon and I was still in the forest. I have to reach Donnerwall before Noon and then catch a train for the countryside of the Dukedom.

I moved cautiously in between the bushes, looking around for any signs of life that wanted to prey upon me. Even if the forest was small, it was still a forest. Mana beasts might appear and currently, I am not strong enough.

It was Alea who made me realize that fact. Even if she was only a low adept mana core mage, she was still far superior to me. If she hadn't gone easy on me by not using her second element or any other lightning spells I, now would have been in the cellar of the Blitzfeld or worse physically crippled.

[Ethan, I think you try to be careful while entering Donnerwall,] Dante warned [The Duke is not a dumbfuck, so he would station people at Donnerwall and also they might've already sent some troops to your Aunt's place]

'I know and please call me "Noah", I have to get used to this name of mine'

[Fine, Noah]

'Great'

As my conversation with Dante continued in my head, I finally reached the edge of the forest. Beyond the forest, I was able to see big stone walls that covered a small town, Donnerwall. The rising sun illuminated the city from a distance.

"We are here," I said exhaling in relief, "Now it's time to get to work"

...

...

As I reached the city entrance, the guards there were in deep sleep which was a good thing for me. I entered through the huge arching gate of stone that stood like 15 meters tall. The town of Donnerwall was quiet as it was still early morning for people to be roaming about in the streets.

Closed stalls and shops covered the streets, few houses where people resided and alleyways were created between those houses leading to the deeper parts of the town. It was not flashy nor it was extravagant, it was just a normal town during its morning phase.

[What is your plan now?] Dante asked, it was still hard to get used to his new voice but it was still better than that annoying mechanical chime. If you are not a system, please just don't pretend to be one.

'First, I have supplies to buy' I stated, 'A good thin blade, that goes well with the Blitzfeld swordsmanship and a ring of alteration'

[Ring of alteration, huh? To alter your appearance?]

'Bingo'

[Then afterward?]

'The train station' I looked upwards at the signboard that was displayed on the top of the store, It read "Braun's General Goods". It was a general store where I would mostly find the items I needed and I have 200 gold so it should be enough for a change of clothes and a weapon.

But the problem was that it was too early in the morning I had to wait till the store opened. I looked around, slowly people were coming out of their houses taking on the challenges of their daily life.

I sat on a nearby bench and waited for the store to open. Two hours passed and finally, the sign inside the store's glass door displayed "open". I stood up and headed inside the store, a sound of a bell rang signaling my entry.

"Welcome, an early bird aren't you?" A burly man with a thick mustache welcomed me whom I presumed was Braun, the owner. He sat behind a wooden counter with his arms crossed, and his brown eyes lingering on me.

The store inside was simple, its walls were covered with shelves and glass containers aligned with different items and goods. The smell of burning wood reached my nostrils as fire burnt in the hearth.

"Good morning, mister" I greeted him.

"Good morning, what do you want son?" He asked, his voice cheery, a demeanor contrasting his bulging muscles under the white tunic he wore.

"Ah, I would like to try a few clothes, and do you by chance have a ring of alteration?"

"Yes, I do have a few you can choose among," His voice now carried a serious tone, "But why do you want one?"

"For adventuring, I would like to hide my identity to not danger my family" This was a common reason. Adventurers or Mazekins, the ones who explore ruins and dungeons, often hide their identities.

It is because the job they perform has many altercations and many dangers including people who become their enemies. So, to not harm their close ones, Mazekins always keep their identity a secret.

"Fine," He replied not questioning me further and heading behind the counter. I waited there for a few until he came out with a small brown box in his hands and offered it to me. "Try it,"

"Yes," I accepted and opened the box. Inside it was a beautiful ring, its halo was of silver, and a blue gem was etched onto it. I took it out of the box and slowly put it on the middle finger of my left hand.

"Can I get a mirror?" I asked.

"Sure, here you go" he handed me a handheld circular mirror.

"Thanks," accepting it, I removed my hood from my head and looked at the mirror.

[Oh, you look different now] Dante remarked.

'Yeah,' I mused as I stared at the mirror, my wheat blonde hair had turned into a shade of light blue. My eyes instead of silver were now a shade of ember. Though these two were the only things that changed, it was enough.

A smile crept onto my face as I asked, "How much?"

"50 Gold." He said flatly.

My smile faded and my now ember eyes were dulled.

Motherfucker.
