Chapter 41: The Trial begins

Now that Jake was suddenly ripped away from Rion and Seer, he needed to find his footing and also gather some information, especially about his path.

So, the first place he headed to—well, that was the adventurer guild. After asking a few questions, taking a few carriage rides, he finally arrived.

The building he saw was by far more stunning than the one from Lumerg. It was three floors, but it was far more massive than the one at Lumerg, made from beautifully crafted marble.

Adventurers of different shapes and sizes walked into the guild, but that wasn’t what shocked Jake—it was the other races that he spotted going in. He definitely saw a dwarf, standing just about four feet, and he saw a male elf, ears long as if it was depicted in the books.

He ignored all of that though and walked into the guild. It was as rowdy as the one from Lumerg, but the inside was better, properly illuminated with crystals finely lining the wall.

The inside of the hall felt oddly cold. He looked around to find the source but couldn’t. He decided to push that thought aside and head toward the counter. He only made a few steps before the system sent out a message.

[Something is coming, Jake]

"What is it? An enemy?"

[No, I don’t know why, but this feels like something beyond anything that we have had to deal with—ever.]

Panicked, Jake looked around. Even Drake couldn’t tell what was going on, and then suddenly, his mark began burning up again. It burned so bad that he fell to the floor screaming.

Everyone turned to see what was happening. Even Crypt and Ophelia were stunned. They tried to come close, but before they could, the glove on his hand burned up, and the mark shined like glowing lava.

Once everyone saw the mark, they immediately stepped back. They knew something was about to start.

The mark projected words into the air, and it read clear for everyone to read.

[The Golden Hundred Trials has begun. Marking the fiftieth Trial since the beginning.]

[A trial that affects all life. Chosen are called to participate or die a death worse than death.]

[The Trial: The Hollow Hero will now begin.]

As soon as that last message came, the light died down, and then a beam of light tore through the roof into the building.

A being appeared—a creature. It was as small as a doll, no bigger than a child’s forearm, cloaked in tattered black clothes. Its head, which was bigger than its body, had no face—just a ceramic-looking mask-like face with no mouth but two round eye sockets with a dim flame of ever-shifting colors.

From beneath its clothes were two long, skinny black arms with black claws. It floated in the air in front of everyone. No one could tell where the creature was looking, but they could all tell one thing—it was definitely watching them.

Jake slowly got up from the ground. He looked up, and there the creature was, right in front of him.

It tilted its head and let out a small laugh, {kekekekeke}. It didn’t have a voice, but its laugh resounded with the over hundreds of people inside the building.

"What... what are you?" Jake asked.

{Me? I’m a Whisper, and I’m here to oversee your trial, kekekekeke.} It said and then flew closer to Jake. freeweɓnovel-cøm

{Hearts will scream and blades will bend,

A hero breaks to save the end...

Bound by thread, you’ll dance their fate,

Guard the lamb, or seal her gate.

Speak no truth, bear the weight,

For silence is your final trait.}

It said those words, reaching everyone’s ears, but no one understood what it meant. So it flew up toward the center and started explaining:

{As the Golden Year Trials have now begun, a Hollow Hero will be formed. The first phase is simple as can be. All within the building will be marked, yet one will be the target. Cruel monsters will seek the target out, yet all of you will face their wrath.

A distance has been predetermined, and if you go beyond it, you will die. So stay with the target to preserve your life—yet staying with her still brings death. Only with her life taken can you all be free.}

It finished speaking and then flew to Jake, speaking to only him.

{If the target dies, the bound go with them. Their freedom comes from their death. But no telling, as the same fate waits if you do.}

After saying that, it flew into the air again. {Kekekekeke, the Hollow Hero begins.} it said and vanished in light.

Sudden colored balls began appearing over the heads of everyone—all glowing red, all but one young lady. Her ball was white. The only person that didn’t have a ball over their head was Jake.

Everyone that was here understood what that creature had said. It was simple—they were bound to the target for a certain distance, and they would die if they left. And not only that, but soon, monsters would come for her, and if they came for her, all of them would be caught in it.

The only way to ensure that this didn’t happen would be to kill the target. That was the information they all received. The only person who knew the truth was Jake.

Immediately he saw the girl with a white ball, he rushed over there, summoning all his undead. They stood there tall, surrounding her.

The girl looked like she was Jake’s age, with jet black short hair. From her light outfit and blade, he could tell she was something of an assassin.

It seemed she already knew what was about to happen, so she grabbed her blade and got ready to fight. When she saw Jake, she thought he was about to attack her—but he didn’t.

Jake looked around the guild room, his eyes cold and threatening. "No one is touching the girl. I’ll make this abundantly clear from now," Jake said.
