Chapter 44: Infused perspective

A few more minutes passed, and all the monsters were cleared up, with none making it relatively close to the girl. But the losses for those who won were not small, as out of four hundred that began, only about three hundred remained.

A hundred lives lost in the first wave—it was an unimaginable loss, and the weight of the trial finally began to set in Jake’s mind.

He looked around, seeing broken and wounded men and women. Seeing people crying their hearts out as they held the bodies of those that were dear to them.

It felt as if his heart sunk. He felt heavy, weak, confused.

[Get your head back in the game, this loss will not be the first one.]

"Master, their death is heavy, but remember that you have to do what will keep all those people alive. Their lives rest in your hands," Drake also added.

"I understand, but it’s not that easy. Their deaths—it feels like it’s because of me. Even if this was the only way, it still doesn’t sit well.

I want to be able to control my own fate, not be bound to it," Jake said, his voice heavy and pained.

Suddenly, his mark lit up, and his path flashed before his eyes, but this time, something was written below it.

{Path of the Broken Logic}

{Silent Speaker

. Infused Perspective}

He read the contents. It gave more information, but he didn’t understand what it was.

{You seem to have awakened the first level of your path,} the Whisper said. It flew toward Jake, flew around him as if trying to see something.

{Ohhhhhhh, I haven’t seen this path in a long time. I thought it had been removed from the set, but it seems you pulled it. Kekeke, I’m lucky to be the one handling you.}

The Whisper seemed genuinely interested in Jake’s path. Jake saw this as an opportunity and immediately asked,

"Can you tell me more about my path?"

{Kekeke, indeed I can, but nothing comes for free in the trial. Everything costs a price.}

Jake became apprehensive when he heard that, but he still went ahead to ask.

"So what’s the price?" he asked.

{Kekeke, I will not tell you now, but the future holds a lot to be seen.}

"Master, I don’t trust this creature. Dealing with beings like this isn’t a good idea," Drake said.

{Tell your pet dragon that a legendary being like him should stay out of such mortal discussions.}

Jake subconsciously took a step back when he discovered that the Whisper could hear what was happening inside him.

{So, will you take the deal?}

Jake knew that whatever it was that this Whisper wanted to ask of him, it wouldn’t be easy. But right now, he had no ideas on his path or the way to use it. He was lost, and he had the feeling that the path could help here.

"Fine, I’ll take your deal. Tell me about my path."

{Good, good. But I can’t tell you about your path entirely until you unlock the rest. They might as well be a mystery to you. But as for your first—you have unlocked your first level, the Silent Speaker.

A little sneak peek into the Silent Speaker: your inner voice holds power—power to create and destroy within minds.

Infused Perspective is your first ability. You can activate it with your thought. It allows you to project thoughts into minds and make them believe what you have projected is right or good.

Resistance will exist—the stronger the mind—and the weight of using this ability is not light. That’s all.}

"Infused Perspective, I see. Thank you," Jake said. "I have one last thing to ask. If you can speak like this, why do you speak that way when talking to all of us?"

{Because I like it. Now, enough chit-chat.}

The Whisper flew up toward the center, pulling everyone’s attention.

{The first wave has come and gone. You all have survived, but the pain you’ll feel is not yet over. The answer still remains right before you. Will you take pain or break free?}

It paused and waited for his words to sink in, and then he continued. {These bodies are all getting in the way,} it said and snapped its finger. All the bodies and the large blood pools on the ground—everything vanished. This somehow managed to terrify them even more, seeing all the bodies vanish.

{You have one hour before your next wave. Your survival is only one stab away,} the Whisper said and vanished.

Immediately the Whisper vanished, the entire hall became tense. Everyone stayed quiet, but their eyes were on only two people: Jake and the girl.

The man with the axe walked toward Jake, his heavy footsteps, his armor tainted with blood, his axe dripping.

He stood in front of Jake. Their eyes locked.

"Hundred dead. Their bodies vanished. Nothing of them remains to be buried. They all woke up this morning, came to this guild in hopes that they would fulfill their daily task and earn a good living.

Some were fathers, brothers, mothers, friends. Yet here and now, by a fate they didn’t incur by themselves, they all died.

What do you have to say about it? What solution do you have when the next hour comes, Chosen?" he asked, gripping his sword as he spoke.

Jake took a deep breath to calm himself. He recalled what Whisper said. He just had to think about it—so he did. He thought about using Infused Perspective, and it worked immediately.

It felt as if his consciousness traveled along a long path and connected with the consciousness of the man. It felt weird to Jake, but he kept pushing.

He brought the idea that this wasn’t Jake’s fault and that the man should calm down. But immediately, Jake was met with heavy resistance, as if his head was slammed with a hammer. He staggered but remained standing. He still kept pushing the idea.

And though the resistance was high, he finally managed to force the idea into the man’s mind.
