Chapter 162: 162. The Megalodon Rises

Carmilla had engaged with the three corrupt crabs, and her sword work was deadly and precise. Every hit found a weak spot in their crystalline shells, breaking the armor that had been hardened by corruption and exposing flesh that was easy to hurt.

Her Guardian’s Resolve ability made her almost impossible to move, and the crabs’ claws scraped harmlessly off her extra defenses.

Zara fought like a demon general, with her twin blades moving in ways that normal people couldn’t see.

An evil octopus tried to grab her with its blade-tentacles, but she cut off each limb before it could reach her. She moved through the creature’s attacks like water flowing around rocks.

Natasha stood on a roof that looked out over the harbor. Her ice magic made platforms and barriers just where they were needed.

A corrupted shark tried to jump out of the water toward a group of people, but Natasha’s ice wall appeared in the air and stopped it. The creature hit the frozen wall hard and fell back into the ocean, dazed.

Liora moved through the chaos like a light, her divine energy flowing into the wounded defenders and cleaning up the corrupted wounds before they could spread.

The corruption storm seemed to get lighter wherever she went. Her holy presence made all the corruption slowly push back.

Sylvia, back in her full dragon form, flew high above and shot streams of dragon fire at the bigger corrupted creatures that were trying to come out of the ocean. Her flames turned corrupted sharks into ash and made a huge corrupted squid go back under the waves.

But for every creature they killed, two more came out of the corrupted waters. The storm of corruption kept pouring its corrupt rain into the ocean, making new threats all the time.

"This can’t go on for long!" Natasha yelled, her analytical mind already seeing the issue. "We’re fighting a defensive battle against an enemy that never ends."

"We need a plan to do things differently before we run out of stamina and mana!"

Rick turned on Sovereign’s Command, and his voice had the weight of demonic power. "CEASE!" for all corrupted creatures within fifty meters.

The effect happened right away and was scary. Every corrupted creature that was close enough froze in the middle of an attack, their bodies were frozen in place by the command.

The corruption took back control after just a few seconds, but those seconds were enough for the defenders to regroup and deal deadly blows.

Still, more corrupted sea creatures kept coming.

A huge, corrupted whale, at least a hundred feet long, started to come up near the main dock. Its mouth opened, showing rows of clear teeth that were as big as them all.

Rick was preparing to use Blood Price to boost his power enough to fight it when Zephyra’s voice cut through the chaos.

"Get out of the way."

She walked forward slowly, still holding her sleeping baby, and was completely calm even though a huge whale was coming toward her. Rick felt a huge surge of magical power when she raised one hand.

This wasn’t the wild, passionate magic of Natasha’s ice spells or the holy light of Liora’s divine energy. This was a precise, planned, overwhelming force that was perfectly controlled.

"Oceanic Barrier: Absolute Exclusion."

ZINGGGG!

The air sparkled, and a clear dome of pure magical energy grew from where Zephyra was standing. It grew quickly, covering the whole port area in just a few seconds.

It didn’t stop when it got to the water’s edge. The barrier went all the way down to the ocean, making an unbreakable wall between the corrupted water and the port.

The corrupted whale hit the barrier at full speed and was pushed back so hard that it flew through the air and crashed back into the ocean a hundred meters away.

Every other corrupted creature in the area tried to get through the barrier, but they were all pushed back. The barrier didn’t just stop them, but it actively pushed them away, keeping the area around the port clear.

Rick couldn’t believe what he saw. "Holy fuck...! That’s amazing."

"How long can you keep it up?"

"Indefinitely," Zephyra said, as if she were talking about the weather. "The barrier will stay up on its own once it is set up."

"It will stay active until I choose to ignore it or until something breaks the foundation anchors."

Rick said, "You’re amazing," and he meant it.

"So this is the strength of a real Grand Sorceress from one of the Seven Major Powers!" Rick can’t hide his excitementat all.

Zephyra’s face didn’t change, but her cheeks might have had a little color on them. "Functional competence is the least I can do for my job."

"This is just enough to get by."

Before Rick could say anything, something big moved under the corrupted water. And it was something much bigger than the whale.

The ocean erupted as a corrupted shark the size of a building launched itself out of the water, but this shark was not like any other shark, normal or corrupted. This was an ancient and terrible thing, a megalodon that had been corrupted into a nightmare of teeth, rage, and hunger.

There were crystalline growths all over its body that pulsed with purple energy. Corruption orbs that glowed had taken the place of its eyes.

The mouth was full of rows and rows of sharp teeth, and it was big enough to swallow Sylvia’s dragon form whole.

The creature hit Zephyra’s barrier with enough force to shake their ground.

BAM!

The barrier held, but Rick could see cracks where the megalodon hit it. The creature pulled back and hit the wall again.

BAM!

And one more time.

BAM!

Every hit ruptured the port, and the cracks spread even more.

Carmilla got her sword ready and said, "That thing is going to break through eventually."

"Probably," Zephyra said, looking at the creature with a clinical interest. "It has a much higher corruption boost than the other creatures."

"It’s about forty percent more than average because someone is in charge of it," Natasha said, her sharp eyes picking out a detail that Rick had missed.

There was a figure on the megalodon’s back, barely visible through the storm of corruption. It looked like a person, but something was wrong about it.

The figure rode the massive shark with the grace and agility of a horse.

"Who the fuck... is that?" Rick asked, his normal eye trying to see through the haze of distance and corruption.

"I don’t know," Zephyra said. "But if they can control a creature that big and corrupted, they are either very powerful or have a direct link to the Archon’s command structure."

The figure on the shark’s back raised one hand, and the megalodon hit the barrier again with even more force. This time, a whole part of the barrier broke like glass.

"At that current rate of impact, the barrier will fail in about ninety seconds," Zephyra said calmly. "I suggest getting ready to fight the megalodon and its rider head-on."

Rick turned on Draconic Sovereignty and felt his power grow by 40%. His scales appeared all over his body, and his partial dragon transformation gave him the strength he would need for what was coming.

"Brace yourself and ready for battle, everyone!"

"When that wall breaks, we hit that thing with all we’ve got!"

His bonded partners stood around him, ready to fight for their lives. Sylvia came down and landed next to Rick in her human form, her eyes blazing with dragon rage.

She said under her breath, "I really hate the ocean."

The megalodon hit again, and Zephyra’s barrier broke like glass, with pieces of magical energy floating away into the tainted air.

The huge shark opened its mouth and charged right into the middle of their defensive line.

Rick, who had five Spirit Bonds and level 50 strength, charged forward to meet it head-on.

"Let’s FUCKING go, you asshole...!!!"
