The panther tilted its head slightly, nostrils flaring as if considering the question. Then, without warning, the beast started moving. It led Ethan to… no surprise… the mines.

Ethan exhaled sharply. Of course, it had to be the mines.

He followed the panther through the dense underbrush, Lia close behind him. The morning sun barely pierced through the thick canopy above, casting eerie shadows over the uneven terrain.

The closer they got, the more Ethan’s unease grew. The area around the mines made his skin prickle. He did not know why but something was off. It was almost as if something other than mana was present in the air around them? What the heck?

Ethan slowed his steps, his brows knitting together. The closer they got, the stronger that feeling became—an unnatural pressure in the air, thick and heavy, pressing down on his senses like an invisible weight.

It wasn’t just mana. It was something else. Something… wrong.

The panther stopped just short of the mine entrance, ears perked, muscles tensed. Its nostrils flared as it let out a low, warning growl.

The next second a bear popped out from behind a nearby tree.

Its fur was a dark, matted brown, but something about its eyes sent a shiver down Ethan’s spine. They glowed—not with mana, but something else entirely. A sickly, unnatural crimson shimmered in its irises, and its massive frame radiated the same eerie pressure that had been seeping from the mine.

The panther let out a deep, guttural snarl, lowering its stance, ready to attack.

However, Ethan immediately dismissed it. The panther was still level 1 and it was not ready for a fight like this. He instead summoned his wolf pack.

All twenty-five of his wolves materialized in an instant, their dark forms emerging from the summoning circles with eerie silence. Their glowing eyes locked onto the bear as they spread out in a semi-circle, fangs bared and muscles tensed.

Ethan grinned. Apart from his relentless practice of mana bolts, this was the second thing he had practiced or rather calculated. Apparently, his forest wolves, common-grade beasts took very little mana to be summoned along with slimes, and spiders.

For half of his mana, he was able to summon the full pack which had some additions to it in the last few days when Ethan added a couple of forest wolves that had been loitering in the vicinity of the small town.

To top it off he let them run loose in the neighborhood so now all of them were more or less at level 10. They had worked hard these past few days and it was time for their efforts to shine.

Ethan gazed at the bear standing in front of him again.

[Corrupted Bear, level 15]

"Let’s see if we can take down this big hairy bastard," Ethan ordered them to attack and at the same time started gathering the rest of his mana. At the same time, Lia started casting buffs on all the beasts.

The bear’s crimson gaze flicked between Ethan’s wolves, its heavy breaths turning into deep, unnatural growls. It wasn’t acting like a normal beast. It didn’t react with fear or caution—it stood its ground, towering over the pack as if it wanted to shred them apart.

The wolves sprang into action immediately without wasting time. Their bodies blurred with speed as they lunged toward the corrupted bear, their snarls echoing through the trees.

The bear let out a guttural growl, lowering its stance as if preparing for impact. The first wave of wolves attacked from multiple angles—one from the front to distract it, while two others flanked from the sides.

The corrupted beast should have been overwhelmed.

But then, it moved.

Faster than a creature its size had any right to, the bear twisted its body unnaturally, dodging the frontal assault while ramming its shoulder into the wolves on its flank. Two were sent flying into the trees with bone-crunching force, their health bars dropping dangerously low.

Ethan clenched his jaw. Even with the numbers advantage, this thing is strong.

Lia’s buffs shimmered over the pack, reinforcing their resilience, but even so, the bear was abnormally strong for its level. However, Ethan did not worry. The bear might have gained something from becoming corrupted but he had something of his own.

This was the third thing he had discovered these last few days. He should have seen it earlier but somehow he missed it amidst all the other details. The bear might be unnaturally strong for a level 15 but so was he. He was level 25 at the moment and a lot stronger than a normal level 25 should be.

Ethan let loose the mana bolt he had been preparing and a concentrated orb of violet energy hurtled toward the bear’s exposed side.

Boom!

The bear growled in pain as it staggered back, blood pouring out of the deep, charred wound. But something was off.

Ethan expected the usual reaction—wounded beasts would recoil, become more aggressive, or try to retreat. Instead, the bear twitched. Its muscles spasmed unnaturally, and its already glowing crimson eyes flared as though something inside it was fighting back.

What the hell is going on? Ethan narrowed his eyes, but he didn’t have time to dwell on it. The corrupted bear let out a guttural roar, its massive body surging forward with renewed speed.

Only the wolves did not allow it to do as it pleased. Six of his wolves threw themselves at the bear at the same time and clamped their fangs onto its legs and back, dragging it down with sheer force.

The bear roared, its muscles bulging as it tried to shake them off, but the wolves held firm, growling as their claws dug deep into its corrupted flesh.

Ethan saw his opening.

He focused, channeling his remaining mana into a concentrated burst. The violet energy crackled at his fingertips before he released another mana bolt—this time, directly at the bear’s exposed skull.

Boom!
