Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 211: The Wolves Are Cunning
"Wow, that’s really clever, feels like they’re not far away. But since when did my hearing get so good?" Lu Ke said with some surprise. She did indeed hear some sounds—the panting of the wolf pack.
"I feel like your hearing has always been good; maybe it improved after we came to this planet," Xu Yi explained. After all, his hearing also improved, allowing him to hear distant and faint sounds.
If Lu Ke can hear it, she must have experienced enhancement as well. As for how she improved, Xu Yi wasn’t quite sure, but he felt she exhibited extraordinary hearing after falling ill that time.
"Seems like it. This planet is truly filled with magical powers," Lu Ke remarked, reflecting on how her strength, speed, recovery ability, and reflexes had all improved.
Previously, she would have abdominal pain during her period, which would last for days.
Now, she didn’t feel anything at all, and it ended after three days without taking a whole week.
"These wolves are really cunning, lurking right there in the woods?"
"Didn’t Lu Ke say she heard them too? But I’m more curious about what happens after the 500-day challenge ends. Will they become as powerful as Superman?"
"If it were me, after 500 days, I wouldn’t mind staying there forever. Isn’t that planet cleaner than ours, with no pollution at all?"
"Stay your ghost there! With no human civilization, such a primitive place would be boring after 100 days, let alone a lifetime."
"Right, you’d have to make everything yourself, how boring. Coming back, you might be like a superhero. Plus, there’s a billion-dollar prize. What’s the point of not coming back?"
"You guys have peculiar priorities. Shouldn’t you be worried about Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s safety?"
"They’re safe, no need to worry. It’ll be fine when the day breaks."
"Exactly, those wolves can’t jump that high."
Xu Yi glanced in the direction of the forest and then said to Xu Yi, "You lie down; I’m gonna go down to get some tree bark and move the campfire over."
Xu Yi pointed to a piece of tree bark not far away; it was over a meter wide, and both sides curled up.
If laid on the ladder, it could be used for sleeping.
Also, by moving the campfire closer, the surrounding area could be warmed up, so they wouldn’t be so cold while sleeping.
"Shouldn’t we wait for the wolves to leave first? This is too dangerous, isn’t it?" Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi, finding his actions somewhat risky.
"Who knows when they’ll leave? What if they guard all night?" Xu Yi thought. He hadn’t had a long sleep in days, and if he stayed awake another night, he’d just have to catch up on sleep the next day.
"Don’t worry, if you see them emerging, just pull me up. They won’t have time to pounce on me," Xu Yi continued, knowing that Lu Ke’s agreement was necessary.
Xu Yi was not the type to be authoritarian.
"Alright, just be careful. I’ll keep an eye on the wolves," Lu Ke said as she adjusted her position, lying down and extending her hand below.
Xu Yi smiled slightly and slid down to the ground, hugging the tree.
Then, Xu Yi first gathered some firewood, placed it in a suitable spot, and then went to drag the tree bark over.
The tree bark was propped up by Xu Yi against a post.
If handed to Lu Ke right now, it would block her view. If the wolves charged out at this moment, Xu Yi would be in danger.
Next, Xu Yi picked up Lu Ke’s wolf fur coat and handed it to her.
Lu Ke quickly received it, draping it over herself.
Finally, Xu Yi ran to the campfire, moving the firewood he could carry to the spot he had prepared and reigniting the fire there. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
After completing these tasks, Xu Yi looked around, shouldered his satchel, and placed the two bamboo tubes filled with water inside.
Then, Xu Yi grabbed Lu Ke’s hand and climbed back up.
He pulled up the tree bark leaning against the post and laid it over the ladder.
"Xu Yi, will this hold two people without breaking?" Lu Ke asked worryingly. Although it was over four meters wide, and there was enough space, she feared the bamboo ladder wasn’t sturdy and might break.
"Don’t worry, it’s definitely solid. I’ll crawl to the other side, and we can sleep head-to-head," Xu Yi said as he crawled over.
The tree bark was indeed quite firm; Xu Yi and Lu Ke had stripped it for half a day, and it felt capable of supporting the weight of one person lying down.
If standing, it would definitely break.
So, Lu Ke watched as Xu Yi crawled over.
"Alright, let’s get some sleep. The wolves can’t do anything to us; we can sleep peacefully," Xu Yi, feeling very tired, was eager to finally sleep until morning.
"Alright." Lu Ke hesitated a bit, then laid down, turning over onto the makeshift bed.
The tree bark actually felt quite nice to lie on.
"Xu Yi, do you need a cover?" Lu Ke asked, hugging her wolf fur coat.
"No need, the fire’s burning below, and there’s no wind, so it’s not cold. You cover yourself; I’m fatter, so I can withstand the cold," Xu Yi said as he closed his eyes, preparing to sleep.
Lu Ke bit her lip; she indeed felt the cold more acutely than Xu Yi did, so she covered herself with the wolf fur coat.
She planned to quickly process the fox skin and two rabbit skins, sew them together, and make a quilt for Xu Yi.
Ideally, they’d catch that white deer they saw and use its skin as well.
Early the next morning, Xu Yi was woken up.
What woke him was rain.
"They said it would be sunny for a few days, now it turned this ugly?" Xu Yi awkwardly wiped the rain off his face, then put on his hat.
He glanced at the time, 5:32.
Good thing, daybreak was soon, or he’d really want to give the sky the rude finger.
"Xu Yi, the wolves are still down there," Lu Ke said, also woken by the rain, and noticed several wolves below.
"Oh, only three?" Xu Yi looked around and saw just three.
"One per person, let’s take them down first," Xu Yi reached for the Hunting Bow resting at the side.
These three wolves were sleeping near the campfire, seemingly not yet awake.
Xu Yi wasn’t going to miss out on these free points and food.
He figured these three wolves were left behind by the Wolf King to keep watch on him and Lu Ke.
Lu Ke immediately picked up her crossbow, aimed it at one, waiting for Xu Yi to be ready so they could shoot simultaneously.
