Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 287: Taming the Reindeer
"Xu Yi, is it really okay to ride straight away?" Lu Ke held the Giant Wolf’s reins and looked at Xu Yi with some concern.
After all, the reindeer Xu Yi was holding was quite restless and seemed eager to use its antlers to knock Xu Yi off.
"No worries, don’t worry about me. If it doesn’t work, I’ll just slice it up for meat. Anyhow, with Giant Wolf and Big White, we’re consuming quite a lot of jerky." With that, Xu Yi grabbed the reins and led the reindeer a bit farther away.
Otherwise, Xu Yi was worried it might hurt Lu Ke.
Lu Ke glanced at Xu Yi, then mounted the Giant Wolf.
Once some distance was made, Xu Yi mounted the reindeer.
The reindeer immediately began to resist, leaping and jumping, trying to throw Xu Yi off.
But Xu Yi pressed against the saddle, squeezing the reindeer’s belly firmly with his legs, sitting solidly atop the reindeer, letting it revolt.
He didn’t even pull the reins, just letting the reindeer go wild.
Lu Ke controlled the Giant Wolf, watching Xu Yi.
She was worried, but she didn’t speak.
She knew she had to give Xu Yi enough trust, believing he could handle it.
However, the livestream audience clearly didn’t trust Xu Yi that much.
"Is Xu Yi really being reckless, just riding up like that?"
"Seems like he’s getting cocky, thinking because he tamely subdued a Giant Wolf, he can handle a reindeer easily."
"Isn’t this how the prairie tribes tame wild horses too? Shouldn’t be a big problem, right?"
"Horses and reindeer aren’t the same thing, and Xu Yi hasn’t tamed horses before. Just boldly riding like that, if he gets thrown off and stomped a few times, it’ll be bad injuries."
"Though it doesn’t look easy, I have a feeling Xu Yi can prove you all wrong."
"Look, the reindeer’s dashing into the forest with Xu Yi, this could get tricky."
Lu Ke watched as the reindeer dashed away, immediately riding the Giant Wolf to follow.
The reindeer ran at high speed, but Xu Yi remained unruffled.
After all, with his skills and abilities here, there’s no need to worry about getting hurt.
If there’s no risk of injury, then nothing to fret about.
Xu Yi didn’t even bother controlling the reins, allowing the reindeer to run freely.
Lu Ke followed behind Xu Yi, the Giant Wolf also quite fast, keeping close.
"Xu Yi, we’re heading out of the woods now." Lu Ke noticed their direction was towards downstream.
"Yeah, if the timing works, let’s go to the seaside." Xu Yi said over his shoulder, though they’re setting off a tad late, the reindeer’s speed might get them to the beach by early afternoon.
"That would be great, we’ve got our coats, so even if we don’t make it back in a day, it’s no problem." Lu Ke said happily.
The reindeer sprinted, in less than an hour, it cleared the woods.
Once out of the forest, its speed significantly slowed.
"Xu Yi, is this reindeer tamed then?" Lu Ke rode up and asked.
The reindeer turned its head, noticing a Giant Wolf behind it, quickly sped up again.
At this point, Xu Yi pulled the reins to make it turn back.
Otherwise, it would run right back into the forest.
Then, the reindeer’s temper flared up, its four hooves started bouncing wildly.
Obviously, it didn’t want to be controlled.
Still, Xu Yi wasn’t anxious at all, yanking the reins side to side to steer the reindeer.
He now felt more confident, believing he could handle the reindeer even without using Taming Skills.
Those who tame wild horses follow this method as well.
Fit the horse with a head collar, bridle, and saddle. As long as its temper and wild nature are worn down, rendering it unable to resist, it can become a mount.
That’s how humans have been doing it for thousands of years.
Lu Ke controlled the Giant Wolf, careful not to get too close, afraid of startling the reindeer further.
Xu Yi steered the reindeer towards the valley where they first arrived on this land.
Originally, it should have taken just half an hour, but Xu Yi and the others spent over an hour.
Still, Xu Yi felt the reindeer beneath him getting easier to control, increasingly mild-tempered.
"Xu Yi’s really tough, managing to ride for two hours like this, almost got the reindeer tamed, right?"
"Indeed impressive, I thought he couldn’t tame it, but proved wrong again."
"Look at him covered in sweat, these two hours weren’t easy, such demanding on stamina, ordinary people couldn’t manage it."
"Xu Yi, you’re awesome (voice breaks)!"
"With the reindeer and Giant Wolf, Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s life will get easier, able to explore more places."
"I bet Xu Yi and Lu Ke will soon find Wanzi and the cousin, wonder what their reaction to Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s mounts will be?"
"Wanzi will definitely drool with envy, just thinking about her expression is really nice!"
The happiest one was Lu Ke.
Because Xu Yi now also had a mount, so she had no burden on her mind.
Crossing the valley, Xu Yi and Lu Ke discovered the place previously devastated by storm now showing hints of greenery, with wild grass beginning to spread. Who knows, by completing the 500-day challenge, this area might become a prairie.
Around one o’clock, the two reached the heights and saw the seascape.
"Didn’t expect us to return so quickly, wonder if Wang Jin and the others have been back." Lu Ke gazed at the sea, couldn’t help saying.
"They probably haven’t, they still have plenty of salt that could last months." Xu Yi said, nudging the reindeer’s belly and steering it towards the beach.
Clearly they wouldn’t return today, so Xu Yi planned to spend the night at the seaside.
In less than two hours, they reached the salt flats.
Tying the reindeer and Giant Wolf separately, Xu Yi and Lu Ke started collecting sea salt.
The sun was still shining bright, so after piling up several salt mountains, Xu Yi and Lu Ke packed over a hundred pounds of sea salt into baskets.
"Tonight we’ll stay by the seaside, head back early tomorrow. Next, I’ll gather some seafood, been a while since we’ve had crabs, wonder if we’ll find any." Xu Yi said to Lu Ke, then picked up his backpack, ready to catch some seafood.
Lu Ke happily followed Xu Yi, craving the taste of crab more than Xu Yi.
Unfortunately, the beach had more shells, crabs were hard to find.
Past six in the evening, they only collected eleven crabs, with most being small, only four were big.
Returning to the salt flats, they found the Giant Wolf was missing.
Yes, the Giant Wolf was gone, but the reindeer was there, unharmed by the Giant Wolf.
Xu Yi checked, the Giant Wolf had lost its muzzle, and bitten its leash off.
Yet, it didn’t attack the reindeer, which was rather strange.
Where, did it run off to?
