Lord of Ascension: The Birth of Chaos-Chapter 51 Night Creature
Chapter 51: Chapter 51 Night Creature
Kaelith stood still as the dragon let out a deep, rough laugh that echoed across the stone walls like grinding rock.
"It seems like you take me for a fool. Why will I grant something that I’ve led to the death of my kind? So you send me to join them?"
Kaelith didn’t reply right away. There was no point pretending. He knew exactly who he was, and what he had once been.
"This time is different," he said calmly, brushing off the ash from his sleeve. "I just have different goals now. I’m not interested in hunting dragons."
The dragon tilted its huge head slightly. The glowing cracks along its black scales brightened, then slowly dimmed.
"You want my blood," it said again. "But you’ll get nothing until you earn it."
Kaelith’s eyes darkened, his jaws clenching from suppressed anger. "How do I earn it?"
"Free me first."
’Did he hear what I just said? Now I wish I had my powers. I would have slayed him and drained all his blood. Now he even dared to give me conditions and... oh how far I have fallen?’
"When you’re strong enough to break these chains," the dragon continued, "when you can break through the magic runes that hold me here... then I’ll give you what you want. Until then, I offer only one thing."
Kaelith’s brows pulled together. "And what might that be?" he shouted from behind the pillar.
"My mercy," the dragon growled. "I’ll let you walk out freely from here."
The words spread through the air like a wild gust of wind, cold and final, as if a door had been shut.
Kaelith closed his eyes. ’I think this will take me a while. I need to gain its trust first.’ With that thought, he gave a slow nod. He knew it wasn’t wise to push the dragon now.
"Then I’ll return," he said, walking out of the pillar. "I hope you will keep the end of your deal."
Kaelith turned towards the door... who knew the grumpy dragon might decide to go back on its words.
The dragon didn’t answer. It only watched him leave, his eyes glowing as the heavy door creaked shut behind Kaelith.
.......
Outside the door. The High Mages still lay asleep on the floor, with the red magic swirling faintly around their bodies. Kaelith walked past them. He got to a safe distance before he muttered some words to his ring, and the red magic around the mages retracted from them.
They woke up in bewilderment. "What just happened to us?" one of them asked as he scanned the surroundings.
"We must have fallen asleep." another said.
"At the same time? That is not a coincidence someone was here." the first mage said, dusting the dirt off his robe. He walked closer to the door.
His brows furrowed at the drop of blood on the ground. He bent down to touch it, and it was sticky but it had already gone cold.
"Someone was here. We need to find him."
Meanwhile, Kaelith walked out of the underground. The dragon’s words echoed in his head.
’You haven’t changed. You’re still hungry for power.’
Was it wrong to want that power again? Was it wrong to want to become strong? To reclaim what had once been his? Was it wrong that he wanted to take revenge?
He didn’t think so. He believes this was the best decision he had ever made.
Furthermore, weakness had no place in his future. Not while the Emperor is planning to kill him, and the Patriarch is still rising with the name of the demon slayer. Not while the seal still bound his soul. And certainly not while the Vorrak still stirred somewhere in the darkness.
He slipped back into the main wing of the palace. The guards he had passed earlier were still slumped against the walls, fast asleep.
Kaelith walked past them before entering his room.
He pulled off his burnt clothes and dropped them on the floor. His skin was a little blistered from the burn.
"It’s a dragon’s fire after all. They lived up to their name."
He moved to the window and looked at his reflection. The boy staring back at him had grey eyes, his dark hair had turned messy, and his skin was covered in soot.
"What a golden opportunity," he whispered, "once I get the dragon to trust me... I’ll become powerful again."
Just as he turned away to close the curtains, a strange chill ran down his neck.
His brows furrowed, Something was wrong.
He sniffed the air, and his eyes narrowed. He stepped onto the balcony. He looked down at the numerous houses near and far, with golden light scattered in the darkness.
Kaelith’s fingers clenched over the railings, he could feel that something had entered the city.
.......
Far from the palace, deep in the remote area of the Empire, a man and a woman stood close together in a narrow alley. They laughed softly, their hands brushing each other’s skin. The stones beneath their feet were damp, and the wind was quiet.
They didn’t notice the mist that rose above their ankles.
The woman stopped laughing, feeling something was amiss. Her eyes narrowed. "Did you hear that?" freeweɓnovel-cøm
The man laughed, pulling her into a deep kiss. "Probably just a stray animal," he muttered between kisses.
They both chuckled as they began to undress each other, deepening the kiss.
Suddenly, the woman took a step back, her arms wrapping around herself. "Something is wrong. We should go back home."
"There is nothing wrong. I know you are shy..."
Then they turned to the far end of the alley, and a figure crawled out of the fog with a shape bent and twisted. Its limbs were long and crooked. Its back was hunched. Its skin was wet and black like a toad. Its skull was bare, shiny, and dark, with soulless ashened eyes.
It opened its mouth. The clicking of sharp mandibles echoed through the air.
"What the hell is that?" the woman cried, her heart pounding in her chest.
The man’s eyes widened in horror, and then he grabbed the woman’s hand. "Run!"
The creature leaped forward with terrifying speed.
The woman screamed as the creature yanked the man away.
She closed her mouth with her hand, but she didn’t wait long to find out what the creature was after. She ran through the alley, looking for safety.
The man didn’t even get the chance to fight back.
Blood sprayed on the alley walls. The creature crouched low, tearing into his flesh with its sharp claws. Then it sank its teeth into the man’s skull, eating his brains.
When it was done, it went after the woman.
