Lord of Ascension: The Birth of Chaos-Chapter 54 The Dragons’ Heirs
Chapter 54: Chapter 54 The Dragons’ Heirs
Scarlet’s hand dropped to his side but his expression didn’t change much, but Kaelith saw the stiffness in his shoulders. The way his lips pressed together, the silence that followed Magnar’s words said more than any insult could.
Scarlet looked away from the eggs, pretending he wasn’t hurt.
’So that’s your game,’ Kaelith thought, his gaze steady. ’You bring six eggs to a table of nine heirs. You already know who you want to eliminate, and who you want to put
into a fight.’
He didn’t need to ask how Magnar had found the eggs. He didn’t believe in coincidence, especially not with dragons. And now Magnar was offering them to children like candy at a feast.
Kaelith didn’t believe in gifts either.
The Patriarch wasn’t offering power. He was baiting them.
Scarlet opened his mouth, then closed it again. His fingers clenched into a fist. Kaelith saw the flicker of pain, quickly buried under a weak smile.
Ezzo grinned, leaning back in his chair. "Told you," he whispered just loud enough for Scarlet to hear. "Even Grandfather agrees you don’t belong."
Scarlet remained quiet, his eyes staring down at his feet, as if that was the most interesting thing in the room.
Meanwhile, Draco stood beside his mother, his eyes gleaming from just the mere thought of owning a dragon.
Magnar ignored the side remarks, stepping closer to the cart. "These eggs are bound to fate. Only those with a strong enough magic will form a bond. Touch one... and if it accepts you, you’ll feel it."
"And if it doesn’t?" Artherine asked in a soft voice.
Magnar turned his head slightly to look at her. "Then it will stay cold," he said. "Just a stone."
Silence fell over the hall again, as everyone stared at the cart.
The eggs sat still, they glowed softly under the light of the lanterns. Each one gave off a strange feeling, different from any magic they had ever seen.
Ezzo was the first to stand. He walked up to the cart with a confident smile and stopped in front of one of the crimson eggs.
"This one’s mine," he said without hesitation, and reached out.
The moment his fingers touched the shell, the egg lit up. Smoke rose from the surface, and the crimson egg pulsed like a heartbeat. A wave of heat spread from it, strong enough that even those still seated could feel it.
Ezzo’s mouth opened in surprise. "It’s warm... it feels alive."
The egg shimmered brighter for a moment, then settled again, still pulsing gently.
"It has accepted you," Magnar said, nodding with pride. "The bond has begun."
Ezzo looked proud. He straightened his back and walked back to his seat like he had just returned from battle.
The next to move was a tall, lean boy with narrow eyes, one of the princes born from one of the concubines. He stepped up to one of the ashen eggs. It looked dull and quiet compared to the others.
He placed his hand on it, but nothing happened at first.
Then the surface began to change. Faint mist rose from the shell and wrapped around his fingers, floating softly in the air like smoke. The egg didn’t shine brightly, but the space around it gave off a gentle hum.
The mist lingered for a few seconds, then faded away.
A smile formed on his lips, and the boy turned and walked back to his seat. The last bit of mist followed him for a moment before it disappeared.
Another prince stepped forward. He looked younger, and more nervous than the rest. His eyes darted between the eggs before settling on the second ashen one.
He placed both hands on the shell and waited.
This time, there was no mist. But the egg gave a faint vibration, like it was moving.
A soft grey light swirled underneath the shell, glowing for a few seconds before fading into stillness.
He stepped back slowly, whispering, "It felt calm..." his eyes sparkled with delight. "I’m now a dragon tamer."
Then Draco stood up.
He walked confidently to the cart. His steps were slow. And his long white cloak brushed the floor behind him.
He stopped in front of the white egg. Then he reached out his hand towards it. The moment he touched it, the egg responded immediately.
A cold wind rushed through the hall, and the shell glowed bright like the moon. Tiny white flakes floated in the air around him, melting before they could fall. The glow from the egg spread across his skin, lighting his face in a pale, beautiful glow.
The wind faded just as quickly as it came.
Draco stared at the egg a second longer, like he could hear something no one else could.
Then he turned and walked back to his seat. His mother gave him a pleased smile.
Now, only one egg remained. The black one.
Everyone turned to look at Kaelith.
’Well, well, well, let’s see what we have here. What a perfect gift for my death anniversary.’
He rose slowly and walked forward. There was no excitement in his steps. He stopped in front of the black egg.
It looked colder than the others, it was like a loner, kept away from the light of the world. Its colour was like an abyss.
"I believe that is the lowest dragon egg. Just take a look at it... It looks so dark. It doesn’t look mystical... maybe it is not even a dragon." Draco said, but his mother covered his mouth again.
"Are you implying that the Patriarch brought a fake dragon egg?" Artherine shot him a warning glare.
Whispers filled the air, as they believed the egg was not special.
Kaelith placed his hand on it, its body was rough with.
At first, nothing happened. ’Come on... You don’t have to be shy.’
Then, shadows began to move around the egg. Thin wisps of darkness rose from the base, wrapping around Kaelith’s wrist like smoke that had come to life.
The air grew heavy and cold. The egg pulsed once beneath his hand with fiery blue light.
The shadows curled gently around his fingers, then slowly faded into his skin.
The egg grew warm like something old and powerful stirring from a long slumber.
Kaelith pulled his hand back, and the shadows vanished. ’This dragon... is strange.’
He returned to his seat, and Magnar’s eyes followed him. His expression was calm, but unreadable.
Now, the six eggs had chosen their heirs. But the room didn’t feel at peace.
Scarlet sat next to Kaelith, calm and quiet. His hands were on his lap.
