Chapter 56: Chapter 56 Desire to Change Fate

Kaelith sat on a chair, his gaze fixated on the black egg sitting on top of the table.

"What kind of dragon are you? You look so unfamiliar." His finger brushed over the callousness of the eggshell.

The egg had not reacted to his touch since he had brought it to his room. "Or are you scared that I might drain your blood before you get the chance to live?"

He poked at the dragon egg, his face only inches away from the shell’s surface. "You better be useful... I don’t take things that aren’t beneficial to me."

"Now how should we get you hatched... I’m only an expert in making you extinct, not the other way around. I guess I need to borrow more books from the library," he muttered to himself.

"Or I can ask a dragon... I happen to have one underneath the floor."

A knock came from the door. He turned, facing it, his brows furrowed as he wasn’t expecting any visitor. And he had told River not to let anyone disturb him.

Before he could say a word, the door creaked open. Scarlet peeked his head from the other side of the door.

"Can I come inside?"

"No."

But Scarlet entered the room anyway, shutting the door behind him.

"I just said no, Scarlet," he glared at Scarlet.

"I need someone to talk to, and you are the only one who came to my mind." Scarlet walked toward him with his shoulders slumped.

He pulled out the chair next to Kaelith before sitting on it. His eyes flicked to the dragon egg. "I thought dragons had gone extinct a century ago. I never knew they were still alive," he said, half dazed.

"Me too. But you go out, I want to be left alone," Kaelith said with irritation.

Scarlet stared at the dragon egg, his expression was blank, like someone whose hope had been smashed time and time again. "Do you know how it feels to be different?"

Kaelith looked at him before closing his eyes in exasperation. It looked like they were going to end up having a long talk. "I do."

"Then do you understand what it means to be looked down upon just because you are different? You are hated and overlooked. No one cares about you or your feelings... even the people you look up to end up turning their backs on you."

Kaelith frowned slightly as the memory of his past life flashed through his eyes.

...

The sky was cloudy, and it looked like it was about to fall any second.

Little Dravak (Kaelith) stood under the cloudy weather. His snow-white hair fell over his shoulders; he was just eight years old.

He watched the other children playing with enthusiasm. He stood a few meters away from them, but his eyes were sparkling with the desire to join the fun.

He would burst out in giggles watching them burst out in laughter, running after one another.

One of the children stopped. Her eyes met with Dravak’s golden eyes. She flashed a smile at him before waving at him to join in the fun.

Dravak was a little taken aback by her gesture. He wondered if the girl didn’t see his features... wasn’t she afraid of him?

Hesitantly, he walked toward them, a little cautious in case they decided to make fun of him.

He started to run around with them. That was the happiest he had been. Finally, he had found people who didn’t look at him differently.

Their giggles and laughter filled the air... until the parents of the children ran toward them as if disaster was coming. One by one, they pulled their children away.

"Don’t you know he is a devil’s spawn? Don’t you ever play with him again, except you want to be sacrificed to the devil," one of the parents muttered in her child’s ear.

One of the parents pulled his child’s ear. "Haven’t I warned you to stay away from that demon? You want to bring disaster into our household?!"

One by one, the children dispersed away from him. He was left alone under the cloudy sky. He looked up at the sky, and drops of water fell on his face, then a heavy downpour followed.

But he was alone, so he turned to his home... or what it was supposed to be. It was dark and cold compared to the other homes, glowing with lanterns and filled with laughter and sweet aroma.

His mother had been away for three months now. He still remembered her last words: "Stay here... this is where you belong. While I’ll go live the life you stole from me, evil child."

He ran inside his home. Only cold and darkness welcomed him. Sobs escaped from his lips. He hated how he looked. He hated that he was different. He wanted to be normal. So he took a knife lying on the table.

He believed if he could change his looks, the world would welcome him with open arms.

.....

"If I say I understand you, you wouldn’t believe me," Kaelith said, his eyes lowering to the ground.

"I just wish that I was normal, just like everyone else, and I wasn’t a weakling. I hate myself, Kaelith... I hate this feeling of being different and looked down on by the world. I want to change my fate." A tear trickled down Scarlet’s cheek.

Kaelith turned to look at him. Those words were exactly the words he had once said himself. His brows deepened. Why did he see himself in him?

Kaelith’s fists clenched. "Do you want to change it?"

Scarlet turned to look at him, wiping his tears away with the back of his sleeve. "Yes. But how can I change it?"

"We can start gradually, but you will not change yourself... you are only changing how the world will view you. And we can start step by step."

"Step by step," Scarlet muttered to himself. "So where do we start from?" He looked up at Kaelith with hope burning in his eyes.

"We will start by getting you a dragon egg."

Scarlet’s eyes widened in surprise, then a frown settled between his brows. "But there is no way for us to get one, and besides, I don’t have magic. There is no way I can tame one."

"Do you trust me?" Kaelith’s eyes searched within his.

"Yes. You are the one I trust most apart from the Empress," Scarlet replied.

"Mother."

"What do you mean?" Scarlet arched his eyebrows at him.

"She is your mother. So you should call her Mother."

Scarlet looked down at his fingers. "Mother." He swallowed as if there was a lump in his throat.

"Good. Come find me before midnight... I’ll already have a plan." Kaelith returned his gaze to the dragon egg.

’If the Patriarch could get a dragon egg, so can I.’
